The living Room Cards years ago
We all have personal little quirks
I know I do.
And mine , at this time of year, do centre about posted Christmas Cards
Since 1989 I have the slightly irrational wish to have enough Christmas cards to hang around my living room. In Providence Road in Walkley, Wynyard Road in Hillsborough and in Bwthyn y llan in Trelawnyd , I have always surrounded the living room with Christmas Cards. And I’ve always been pleased that it has happened…every year…….every year for 36 years….
Is it all about ego? ….perhaps?……is it about validation ? Could be …..Neediness? …….you never know
Habit? …too right ….
Last night I posted my Trelawnyd Productions! Christmas Cards…thirty cards all told …..26£
A reduced number than I usually send ….
A statement which is sad ….that posted Christmas cards seem to be a bit of a dinosaur nowadays
I have to accept that because of financial constraints people just don’t send Christmas cards anymore

DeleteIt's a shame that postage has become so expensive. We get fewer and fewer cards each year.
ReplyDeleteMind you, a lot of our friends and family are no longer with us so that has a lot to do with it.
That’s why it’s important to write them. I spoke to a dear friend today whose cancer has just returned, he was looking forward to my card which is on its way x

DeleteMost people I know send electronic Christmas cards these days.Some dinosaurs via email. Not usually to do with finances although postage is high now.

DeleteI don't like receiving cards (am I odd?) but I do send them, because I know that many people do like them. We all have our little quirks, they're part of what makes us who we are. xx

DeleteI sent a dozen cards yesterday, the list seems to get shorter each year, including a couple of people who have moved and not sent me their new address (one of my nephews.)

DeleteMy dear old mum and dad always had a roomful of Christmas cards strung around adding to the festive ambience, we never get very many, although I still send quite a few, I agree, the tradition of card sending is on the way out sadly.

See my final comment. On reflection , my love of Christmas cards is a nod to my mother who loved giving and receiving them. The writing of the cards would feature as an evening job for several nights with piles of cards pilled up on the coffee table with fags, an ash tray and a large gin

DeleteSending cards at Christmas is a tradition I'm reluctant to relinquish. Do you think it has something to do with an appreciation for the written word? John, you are a writer. Remember the long missives once sent in the Christmas letter? I think social media has replaced some of that as well. Consider this your Christmas card.
ReplyDeleteI think it’s about “ effort” Mona, the effort of writing a chosen card, the effort of the choosing of words and phrases and the effort to physically address the envelope ( if no postcode no delivery)
DeleteI am saying this in good faith. I have had cats all my life and love and understand them. If a cat has access to outside they never urinate inside unless they can't get out. If you provide a litter tray they will always use that. They are very clean beautiful animals and are always eager to please. I think there is something wrong with your cat.

I still send a few Christmas cards. So many people don't bother with Christmas so they no longer receive a card off me. Cost of a stamp is ridiculous.

DeleteI hand deliver cards as I see friends and family locally. My husband’s family live back east, so send them cards as they send us cards. Most cards I get are not traditional cards that I love, but the Family photo postcard that seems to be the trend. I have a friend in the UK that I exchange cards with. Postage was $4.50, so that was pricey. Would send you a card if I had your address! Cali

DeleteNowadays I have quite a few friends whose religion doesn't include Christmas, outlived most of the others! But I send greetings, usually electronic ones, at other times.

DeleteI buy my stamps a few at a time well in advance that way I can still send my Christmas cards, I love to send and receive them, it's one tradition I am hanging on to. Firmly.

DeleteI still send Christmas cards to distant family and friends but postage is now so high, that may stop. It's 78 cents for the cards in the States and $1.60 for international stamps.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a child (1950s) in Memphis, we got two postal deliveries Mon-Sat in December because there were so many Christmas cards mailed. My international cards were mailed a week ago.
Love the photo of the cards encircling your sitting room! I have framed some I've received and hang them every year.

DeleteDuring 2025 I have lost four more friends from my once lavish Christmas card list. Plus another who said since her husband died [both were friends] told me bluntly she no longer wished to receive cards--I am giving up. I sent a handmade card to my brother and SIL and a pretty card to a faraway elderly friend. People I'd write to anyway. Younger friends do not send cards, never have, never will. Sadly cards are pretty obsolete, it's not a judgement of you or your ability to cultivate good friends. I think hanging just two or three would be sad, maybe tuck them on a windowsill in the kitchen instead.

DeleteAmong my friends and family i'am almost the lone person that still sends cards... but i send them ... every year.. not because i will get one in return because i most likely will not but i send them because they bring me joy to do so... and i can afford the stamps... Last couple years i have had simple designs that i paint with watercolor... In fact i have a stack of every Christmas card i have ever received for the 36 years of my marriage tied up with a big red bow and i usually manage to add at least a couple every year...

I’ve thought about this today and I have to recognise that my love of Christmas cards comes directly from my mother, who took the whole event very seriously including the documentation of who sent what ? In a separate diary

Can remember having a cat that peed in my partners open briefcase…on a business cheque book. Virtually the only cheques in that account were for paying tax, Made me smile as I sent a slightly fragrant cheque off to Revenue Canada.

We put a greeting in our local Welsh language paper for all the local people, and a donation to charity instead of the cards, however there are still family/ old friends/ old family friends that I cannot stop sending to! A few well in their 90s probably enjoy the thrill of a physical card. The first 30 went off today with the terrible round robin letter! But by know there is no way arthritic fingers can write 50 letters- & be legible ! It is the contact I feel is important, even if you are not on top form ? So keep outing them off to raise someone’s spirits ! Xx
