  2. Fabulous - you can't beat vinyl. I have a reconditioned 1963 dansette record player - looks and sounds great. Currently listening to a 1957 Jonah Jones Quartet Swingin' on Broadway LP. Cheers me up as it's so blessed bleak outside.

    1. I’ve never had a record player as a grown adult, just a teen. Finding a local record shop and taking a trip down memory lane was incredibly sweet this afternoon

What a cosy and calming scene in your cottage, as always. So pleased you have a new turntable, and vinyl is making a comeback; there is something very special about taking a disc out of it's sleeve, placing it on the turntable and waiting for that hssss as the needle drops. Far more human and connected that a CD. Sit back and enjoy (charity shops usually have some great LPs lurking....

  7. My 27-year-old granddaughter received a turntable for Christmas a couple of years ago. This year I gave her a Carol King record because there are songs on it that we all know we know, we just aren't sure who sang them. She was thrilled. Next year I think I will give her Diana Krall so she can experience a little soft jazz. I think my last post was printed as anonymous, so here I am, Ana, from Michigan.

  8. I do like CD's for their ease of use, but vinyl does have a certain something. It's a bit like the difference between a real fire and a radiator. Both do the same job, but one has "heart"! I remember when I worked in the record library, having to scan both sides of the LP and mark where the scratches were on a card insert, so we could see if there were any new ones. Some were so old and well used, they were ALL scratches! And I remember putting old pennies on the stylus to stop the needle jumping. Happy days. xx

    1. Before moving to Germany in 1988 (where I then lived for 3 years) I bought and duplicated in CD format my favourite pop vinyl LPs, including my entire Beatles collection - and slung out all the vinyls, thinking, as so many did, that CDs were the only and the better way forward. Oh, woe! How I miss them! (Including, of course, their glorious and irreplaceable sleeves).

I left my husband in the mid 90s, and because he insisted on keeping the stereo system he had given me for my birthday a few years before, I left all my albums. Aaarrgghhh! Why would I do that?!? My 1960s Meet the Beatles! Insane. So now I'm planning to downsize and move into an apartment or some similar place, and you've inspired me that once I've gotten where I'm going, I can buy a new turntable and replace my beloved albums. Thanks for sharing that lovely living room scene - very nice.

What a beautiful scene and wonderful music, you are blessed with your home and animals. Agree try charity shops for LP’s the variety is vast. I committed all of my CD’s to a Brennan but have kept my favourites, also kept all of my vinyl despite requests from two dj’s in the family - hah no way!! Still play them and boy do they take you back. Jan in Castle Gresley

I've got a rather large vinyl collection dating back to the 60s, both mine and sadly my recently late husband's. A very varied collection which I still play sometimes. I would never part with them.

Your home looks so cozy, dogs wandering about, Dot breathing hard, nice fire going and beautiful music on your new turntable. Life is good. I listen to my music from my iphone through the speakers on my Bose wave sound touch. I think it sounds great but hey my ears are 82 years old.

  24. Nice on John. We got a turntable a few years ago to play the vinyl that we had both brought into our relationship. My latest was a special edition picture album of Prince Greatest hits. Old school music machine are the best. Love this piece by Handel you are playing. Have a wonderful 2024

  30. My 'cottage' is not as compact and quaint as your beauty, however with a real fireplace and a blazing wood fire at this time of year I do get a similar vibe on these dark nights. Music is from my laptop currently as the vintage stereo system with cd player has kicked the bucket!
    All looks lovely there John.
    Happy New Year.

I needed this dear friend. My husband has been in the hospital so things here have been hectic and strange. He came home yesterday so my plan is to make our little home cozy today and tonight. Our sweet dog Annie, the fireplace on, etc. Thank you. You already know that I consider your blog therapeutic and this is a perfect example with perfect timing. love, Jackie
