It’s 70 years since Singing In The Rain was made, and so it’s easy to forget just how buff Gene Kelly actually was as a young man.
He was very easy on the eye.
Around twenty five people turned up for film night which is probably better numbers than the professional Scala cinema in nearby Prestatyn
And I must admit the film holds up very well despite its age.
I do like an old film! Gene Kelly's dance routine is a classic. Morecambe and Wise got close, but the original is the best! xx
ReplyDeleteLike morecambe and Wise Kelly was was stickler for practice and rehearsal
DeleteAn earworm for my day,
ReplyDeleteYes good Morning, is the best song in the musical and it was written for Judy Garland I believe
DeleteThere's been a lot of singing in the rain this month and swearing too. Roll on August!
ReplyDeleteI love SITR, but Donald O'Connor didn't get the credit he deserved!
ReplyDeleteAs a child, I had quite a crush on Gene Kelly, despite him being 12 years older then my own mum!
When my son was a teenager, refusing to leave his bed in the morning, I used to dance around his bedroom singing 'Good Morning', which for some reason got him out of bed and running to the shower room.
Of course it could have been because I can't carry a note in a bucket! X
I agree Donald O Connor was a real physical comic genius and wonderful dancer
DeleteTheir clothing would still be fashionable today, 70 years later! Gigi
ReplyDeleteThe costumes were from the 1920s and 30s the time where the film was set
DeleteWe have a similar set-up in our little town John - I understand that it holds up quite well Every Friday evening.
ReplyDeleteWe made 100£ or so , not bad for three hours work
DeleteWe would like to do this but we were told by our council that we needed a licence. Did you manage to get one? How?
ReplyDeleteP.S. I hope your sister is feeling better soon.
M from Lincs
You do need a license but it is not that expensive..
DeleteOh right thanks, I think I have been fobbed off by the council, I will ask again! Thanks.
DeleteM
I will check for you but yes we had to get a licence , I think it was 90 £ and we paid for it on our mamma Mia night
DeletePs My sister isn’t unwell xx
DeleteOh thanks, I have just emailed council to ask.
DeletePs Sorry must have misread your post, glad your sis is really OK!!!

Here are the folks you need to contact:

The happy carefree positivity of it has stayed with me - I hear the music and singing whilst walking my dogs and join in x 🌦

DeleteI have always loved that chemise dress and those shoes Debbie wore in this scene!
ReplyDeleteShe was a cracker of a dancer too wasnt she ? And bitingly funny, that where her daughter got her famous humour from
DeleteNot a bad turnout atall
ReplyDeleteNo, we worked out that compared with the mission impossible audience I was a part of recently we earned just as much with our extras too
DeleteDancers are all athletes and built accordingly!
ReplyDeleteO’Connor’s somersaults against the walls , still stand up amazingly
DeleteHow fun! I doubt we have 25 people showing up at any movie at our theater these days!
ReplyDeleteWe had three young girls aged 7 who curled up on beanbags on the floor behind their mothers
DeleteSinging in the Rain and GK are old time favorites. 25 attending is more than I've seen in our theater recently.
ReplyDeleteI know, we were pleased with the audience and Pippa from the rectory made a point of saying how much she enjoyed herself
DeleteThat is one of my favorite old movies and am so glad you and the others got to see it once more. What fun!
ReplyDeleteHugs
We are debating what to show next
DeleteI love that song. My mother used to sing the chorus when she was feeling particularly cheery in the morning.
ReplyDeleteThe 50s kitchen they danced in was delightful.
I think I recall my mother singing GOOD MORNING
DeleteSinging in the rain was my first experience with dinner theatre.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely…dinner theatre is a new term to me and I had to Google it
Deletehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinner_theater
Gene Kelly had the best bum in the business! I love the "Moses Supposes" tap routine and all its complexity. Debbie Reynolds was only 19 at the time of the film and Gene was 32.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t realise she was so young . She was trouper then
DeleteI adore Gene Kelly and love old movies.
ReplyDeleteI always preferred Fred Astaire but Kelly had really grown on me

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely event, apart from watching the film, a chance to get out and chat to other people. I’m always so impressed with the community events you help organize. It’s so easy to be lonely as you age, to think oh why don’t I just stay home and miss out on a social life, events like these are so important on so many different levels. Jean/winnipeg
I think the village friendship group ( which numbers 80 people over 60 ) suggested the movie
DeleteI need a nap after that. How athletic all dancers had to be in those days. Singing and dancing . A real picker upper.
ReplyDeleteYes exhausting and uplifting
DeleteThat was a good turnout for the film. I don't know that I could sit at one of those chairs though to sit through a film. Could anyone donate a few sofas or armchairs for events like this? although it probably wouldn't be practical (for storage etc.)
ReplyDeleteA good point Simone
DeleteI will suggest the TCA buy some soft cushions
I love that scene. It actually brought tears to my eyes. They seem so young, and to be having so much fun.
ReplyDeleteYes, their joy was infectious
DeleteMy most fave movie of all time. I listen and watch this independent take on the hit single 'Singing In The Rain'. It's very ingenious. It was done by a bunch of students. Watch towards the middle. You will see how talented they are. I watch this almost every day. Makes me smile. Makes me happy. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW4QoWsVi_g
ReplyDeleteThank you for this, it deserves a bigger audience
DeleteDarn right it holds up.
ReplyDeleteCol is correct when he said Donald O'Connor never
got the credit he deserved.
O'Connor's Make 'Em Laugh routine is one of a kind.
Debbie Reynolds sings If I Had A Talking Picture of
You-hoo on YouTube.
Gene Kelly was in the first (Broadway) production of Pal Joey by Rodgers & Hart.
John O'Hara wrote the original Pal Joey stories.
Right girl, wrong song.
Delete*Debbie Reynolds & Bobby Van.
All I Do Is Dream of You (The Whole Day Thru).*
YouTube
Thank you for that ….it was lovely to revisit a real classic
DeleteSuch a delight to listen to that again!
Delete@Haggerty,
DeleteI'm Col, and I'm female!
'Col' can be an abbreviation of a lot of names, both masculine and feminine!
We're both right about Donald O'Connor though!
The audience or the actors lol?????
ReplyDeleteAnd Debbie Reynolds was a brand new 20 year old and they did "Good Morning" in one take. Gene Kelly was a tough taskmaster.
ReplyDeleteI never tire of watching Gene Kelly's ass --- No, wait, I meant of watching Gene Kelly dance! Damned autocorrect. And you included one of my favorite numbers. What a trio.
ReplyDeletefunny
DeleteBye Bye Birdie came out it 1963, making it 60 years old. Maybe it would be a good next film.
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog
