Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice *sort Of  was a bit of a romp last night.
A comedy version of Austin’s novel played from the perspective of five maids who Reinact the the lives of the Bennett family and their romantic connections with Wickham, Bingley and Darcy.
It’s clever and incredibly well acted and has comic timing to die for as the five leads play four of the Bennett sisters, and all the other main characters sans Mr Bennett who we only “see” silently sitting behind his newspaper.
The maid thing, is a loose connection as the novel is deftly covered from start to finish without much input from them. Mrs Bennett (Dannie Harris) is now detected as a potty mouthed, drunk with an east end accent where as Lizzie( Emmy Stonelake) is a buxom Welsh Nessa with hefty calves and who bursts into Carly Simons’ You’re so Vain when she meets Darcy for the first time.
So you get the idea
It’s all very silly, and well done.
But as the audience clapped away at the cast belting out  Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero, I couldn’t help thinking it was the froth that many audiences want right at this moment and although I laughed , I’d seen enough by the end of the first half.

So what today?
A bit of shopping, booking flights to Barcelona too…..it’s cold so I’m making soup  too.
Hey ho

  7. Earlier this year I read P & P for the 5th time in my life - and, though I wish I didn't, still have trouble with Austen's style of writing despite having so very many admirers - and also despite us now knowing that her editor mucked around with her manuscripts as well as correcting her misspellings, her punctuation and grammatical errors. (Apparently she was particularly weak at judging where to place paragraphs). Having read all her novels more than once, and seen numerous films, yet still attempting to grasp her genius which must be in there somewhere, I think this theatrical interpretation you saw would be just the kind of thing I need to give me a new and entertaining angle on the best known of her works, froth and all! Pleased you enjoyed at least the first half - as I feel I would have too, maybe moreso.

    1. Interesting Raymondo , I’ve read it once and found it a bit laborious. I much prefer the Keira knightly production and I adored Ang Lee’s Sense and sensibility

    2. Yes ' laborious' is the precise right word for how I too find most of Austen.
I did see both the films you mention though can't recall a single thing about either of them. Have to see if they're available online for free somewhere.

  9. Having your tickets to Barcelona moves things forward...a holiday in the works is always good. The frothy angle of the performance bringing laughter to all is uplifting. Don't we all need to laugh more.
