A Thought or Two

This morning Ruth went back to work in the greenhouses and I took myself down the coast towards the village of Findhorn.
I go home this afternoon.
I wanted to see red squirrels in the pine trees skirting the sand dunes but only managed to see the pointed heads of a couple of seals well beyond the surf .
The Findhorn Foundation has been an interesting experience.
Like everything in the modern world  the community has had to evolve in covid times, with redundancies hitting the staff hard during lockdown and a change  from volunteer staff in key positions to salaried staff who have pensions, bills to pay and corporate ideals to juggle alongside the foundations’ community beliefs and shared objectives for personal growth and a healthy lifestyle.

I can see the appeal.
There is a warmth and a camaraderie here, even though two of the main public meeting ( and community eating buildings )were set alight and destroyed last year by a disgruntled ex employee, there is still a sense of community very much evident. The new corporate, eco friendly and expensive private housing lies a stones throw from the huts and caravans where I slept last night and in one of a beautifully appointed rental house, I was invited into, I spied a 50 inch Tv alongside the homegrown plants and eco friendly decor .

Findhorn is like any community. You take from it what you want to but unlike every community there is a lot going on at the get go.
That is part of its strength and a little of its weakness, I think
For its easy to forget the real world that lies beyond the Sandhills, and out of sight of the pine trees and the hobbit houses almost hidden away in the glades of wild flowers.

    1. The foundation seems in a period of Flux and change. I guess most charities are in such a place . But this one seems pushed and pulled by its traditional values and ways of sustaining its original message

  3. And, sometimes, all one wants to do is forget the real world that lies beyond.

    1. I think Ruth has found it already. It's not a place I would and will go to for achieving peace as you say but it's been a place I've enjoyed and felt comfortable in

    2. I'm glad Ruth is healing, and glad you enjoyed the rest and spending time with a good friend. Hope the flight home isn't delayed and you're soon back with the girls and Albert. xx

  5. Probably just what you needed, but I know you'll not be surprised to hear that for me, the whole thing sounds like the seventh circle of hell.

  6. If you can find a copy of this book, it is an interesting read regarding the beginnings of the Findhorn Community. Glad you had a nice time.

    2. Really odd. Angels, fairies and devas. The big vegetables were pretty amazing though. Have a good week!!

  7. This community sounds so interesting to me. I've dreamt of a tiny house sort of one, where all are invested in it, keeping it clean, gardening together, and caring for others who need help. Rather Utopian of me, I realize, but I know that community is what humans really need to have in order to thrive.

    1. What's interesting that apart from many of the personal growth sessions and workshops that take place at a formerhotel in Forres many visitors to the community seem to dip in and out so go speak

  8. I completely understand going there. A place of forgetting to heal your heart and mind and re-emerge it to the world.

Who is to say which world is real. The one where we connect with strangers on the internet and bond? Or the one where you stand shoulder to shoulder hands plunged into the earth growing the food that will feed your neighbour?

  9. Such a shame that someone felt the need to express them selves by causing such damage, and in a way that would have affected the whole community.

Like anywhere in this world where there is a mix of people, ideals and understandings there is always the good and the bad.

... although I'm not sure where a 50" television fits into this ;-)

You seemed to enjoy the quiet and community of the place as well as time spent with Ruth. I find the new corporate structure a very big shift. It was probably shift or not survive.

  17. My brother in law and his wife spent several years living as part of the Erraid community which is part of the Findhorn Community. They had suffered a terrible tragedy a few years beforehand and it gave them time to recover [not heal but adjust] before they moved back down this way. Arilx
