Joni's album of crooner covers, which includes a couple of her own songs like this one, is my one desert-island disc. I have adored her music since I was 15 years old and have at least 17 of her CDs, but the one this version of Both Sides Now is on is by far my favourite. That feels disloyal because they aren't all her own songs, but there you have it. For me, she expresses emotion better in this song than when she first sang it. Much more depth. -Kate P.S. I made sure my son got to meet her when there was a retrospective of her paintings at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon many years ago, and she impressed me with her kindness and attention to him, and with her glow. She actually glowed. I wondered at the time if wealthy people used some kind of super makeup the rest of us never heard of.
This song takes me back to my college days and Judy Collins. We would sing along as we blasted the song from the record player in my friend's dorm room! Those were the days!
It's quite poignant to hear and compare both her versions, one recorded when she was twentysomething and one 40-plus years later. The experience captures the spirit of the song.
Thanks for sharing I often play this version while driving in my car I have to be alone for this one I have aged along with Joni and look back on what seems a lifetime of memories but I don't know if I'm wiser now but I'm grateful to still be here and just want to wrap myself up in this song.
A side note to Stubblejumpers cafe, small world I used to love going to the Mendel art Gallery when I lived in Saskatoon.
It was okay but in my humble opinion it lacked the emotional believability of much earlier versions by Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins.
ReplyDeleteAhhh! That's better. Thank you Joni.
DeleteLove surrounds us, the best is yet to come
ReplyDeleteAt 67 years old, I, too, really don't know life at all. Still waiting to find out what it's all about! xx

Joni is great! An American Treasure! She's experienced some serious health issues since this was recorded.
ReplyDeleteShe is a treasure and I'm happy to have the whole world claim her but Joni is a Canadian gal.
DeleteThis song brings much different memories to mind than when I first heard it decades ago. Married nearly 50 years ... no illusion there!
ReplyDeleteHugs!

ReplyDeleteAre you trying to tell us something with this title?
ReplyDeleteAs soon as saw her I became tearful and had goosepimples x

ReplyDeleteIconic Joni Mitchel. Her words have always resonated with me.
ReplyDeleteNow you see both sides how does it make you feel?

I don't get to the city (I live two hours east of Saskatoon) often anymore but the Mendel is still a good place to visit ... especially the solarium!
DeleteI did learn from some of the things I did. LOL
ReplyDeleteOhhh, I love this project, it looks promising. More, give us more!!
