The Eternals

After exceeding the 25 minimal singers for choir I felt as I did at school at being picked second last for the football team ( last was Darren Jones with the special Built up Right shoe)
I was told that I couldn’t attend !

At a loose end, I went to see The Eternals hoping it was going to be as entertaining as Dune
It wasn’t
I’m not going to attempt to tell you the plot.
Suffice to say it’s a overlong, over complicated ,mismatch superhero film based loosely on Greek mythology
Like The Great British Bake Off , The Eternals ticks every minority box
This eclectic group of 10 heroes is fucking eclectic , a Latin leader ( Salma Hayek) a gay black boffin (Brian Tyree Henry), a deaf heroine ( Lauren Ridloff from The Walking Dead), as well as the acting lips that is Angelina Jolie, an incredibly wooden, very Scottish Richard Madden as well as other English Asian and American Indian and Irish actors.
Who I did like was the addition of the mountainous Korean actor Ma Dong Seok ( the surprising hero from the Korean zombie movie hit Train To Busan ) He gave the whole movie a bit of heart.
I had to text my nephew Leo of my disappointment even before the final credits rolled
He wasn’t surprised
The 18 year old, superhero fan hadn’t bothered to see it yet
Just as the film started choir messaged me, and told me I could attend as there had been a cancellation
Hey ho

Ma Dong Seok and the acting lips Jolie

I had a real good friend in school never got picked for anything. I always picked her and it boosted her confidence. I was a really good athlete but she was still a great friend. So I did to help. I was her maid of honor at her wedding.

  3. Sod's law! If you'd stayed home you'd have been on hand to rush to choir, AND missed a crap film. My friends and I always took ages to get changed for hockey, just so we didn't get picked. Getting my ankles whacked with a hockey stick isn't my idea of fun! Did your visit to the GP bring any joy? I hope so. xx

  4. Typical-make other arrangements and that happens-I too was not a chosen one for school sports team pickings-I recall standing waiting for my name for ages -I was happy enough as I hated hockey and the large bully girls wacked my shins if I got anywhere near them -I would run away rather than obey the teachers urgent "Tackle"-I much preferred to be a'back'and chat with my friend(It sounds like I went to the same school as happy hooker)x

I wasn't chosen for athletics either as I was the next to smallest in my class but it didn't bother me as I wasn't much interested anyway. I loved (and love) to read.
Wish you could have gone to choir and had missed the movie that was far less than enjoyable.
    How are you feeling?

    Hugs!

    3. John, I can empathize with you.

As for the diverse makeup of the Eternals, some will argue that's been the secret message of superheroes all along. The first one, appropriately named Superman, was created by two Jewish kids for a largely gentile audience. Clark Kent is seen by some as a metaphor for assimilation (none of which means that the movie is any good, unfortunately.)

    4. The Eternals movie, I mean, isn't any good. Not one with Superman.

  8. I don't think Ms Lips is a minority, is she? Superhero films are not my thing, but I wouldn't watch it anyhow just because she is in it; I don't usually have negative feelings toward actors/actresses but she really gets on my nerves. Rant over. As for getting picked for sports teams, I always wished I could just sit out the games altogether. Except for track and field - I didn't mind that so much because most of it was competing against yourself. I hope you get that infection beat back soon; it's not any fun being sick.

  9. But you do sound to be getting over that horrible infection.

  11. Gawd, I hated organized sports in school. The popular girls were always chosen as the team 'Captains' and used their crappy entitlement to pick their besties first...even if they sucked. But as you say...hey ho. My world opened up beautifully once I graduated and got on with my life. X

  12. I'm glad you get to go to choir. Limiting participation seems wrong to me. Everybody should be accommodated.

    1. We are restricted with the venue size
The easiest thing is to change venue but finding a bigger hall locally is proving difficult

  15. The Eternals...I have yet to hear a good review yet. I hear a very difficult and too tightly woven plot...though I do like Madden and Jolie.

  16. Gee that would put me right off choir forever. Add in your working Tuesdays and I'd say, Bye Choir. Not playing with a group who makes me feel like the last loser chosen. [I have on opinion on the fil, don't watch movies or scy fi.] Hope Leo is well and you meet up soonish.

  18. Sorry about the movie. My husband is a big super hero fan and he is not even interested in seeing it. I hope you are feeling a little better!

  19. I was never allowed to pick anyone for anything. That was left to a couple of boys who were the best athletes. I lived in fear of being picked last.

    Love,

  20. It's good to be fearful of The Choir Police who are scouring venues around the kingdom, seeking out the villainous rule breakers. I understand they are also arresting baritones and altos who persistently register bum notes and try to conceal their awfulness behind the tuneful voices of more capable choristers.

  21. The movie sounds awful but it's not one I would watch. Unlike Dune which I thought was very good.
I can imagine that being picked last is a horrible experience and it is worse when everyone sees it happening regularly too.

  22. With choir, is it more a case of last in first out and not chosen by ability ? ( trying to make you feel better ) The Eternals should have been good with that cast ….. just goes to show an actor is only as good as his script ! XXXX

  23. I was one of those kids who was never chosen for any sport. It suited me fine.

  25. Getting picked last at school carried on into my adult life! When I have joined anything where you have to pair up - I end up being paired up with the teacher as I am the one left over! I can laugh about it now.

I hope that you get seen by the GP soon. x

  26. I liked the movie!
It was my first movie since I don't know when (well, the beginning of the pandemic) and I enjoyed it. I did think it was a little bit too long (it's an origin story) but I liked the plot and the notions of colonialism and moral ineptitude it brought forth.
And they did pick you, no?

    XOXO
