Routine

I make a point of going out for a walk when I’m on night shifts.
Even the shortest of ambles breaks the claustrophobic monotony of working all night and sleeping all day.

We walked down the lane at six pm. It was overcast and cooling rapidly and the sky had a slightly yellow tinge to it.
It suddenly feels like autumn.
And of rain.
Untidy black “V’s” of Canada geese move east in the sky and the ponies, fortified  by being fed and watered by their owner Sue cantered up and down field neighing and whickering excitedly .
Albert remained home, hunched on the lawn, pretending not to be watching out for the house sparrows chattering inside the honeysuckle by the front door.
We amble home.
Under the new arch over the gate, which still sports the final sweet pea blooms of summer.
The dogs curl up together on the couch to keep warm as I get ready for work.

Life plods on

  1. Sounds lovely to me. We go for an evening walk , just around a few blocks to get the dog out, but it's so lovely to walk then. last night there was beautiful little fingernail moon in the west and the brightest planet, Venus? So peaceful. and i always love to see the geese flying above... i hear the honking and race out to find them. Hope you have a good night/day.

What a wonderful post of a day in your sweet village, with word pictures to help us see, hear, and smell what you experienced on your walk with Mary and Dorothy. Ta!
Wishing you, your co-workers, and patients a serene night.
It's a rainy day here and I'm sewing pink/green/ cream quilt blocks together.

    Hugs!

  10. Life Plodding: It comes and it goes. It is what it is. It will be what it will be. It's good and it's bad. It's fun and it's boring. It's less than it seems. It's more that we know. It's sunshine and rain. It's drought, flood and snow.

  13. It's good to walk and contemplate our surroundings. It is often those everyday scenes and actions that we would most miss if they were taken away. I enjoy your descriptions.

  17. Cool days and even cooler nights with shorter daylight all signals the seasonal change. Soon the leaves will drop from the trees but right now the Maple trees are red-yellow-orange and looking beautiful.

  19. If I was unable to walk in the fresh air every day, I would die of boredom. It's good for the soul, and allows thinking time.

Nights are so hard and you are right about the walk in the fresh air helping. Also the natural light is helpful.
