What Pleases Me

I bought this ceramic cheese board today.
It cost 8£ from Sainsbury’s
It’s cool to the touch and you can feel the leaves when you run your fingers over it.
I was so pleased by it.
I love being pleased by simple things
The joy of a gift given, a sweet view of the sea on the way to work last night
And the cold touch sweetness of a cheeseboard
Bought as a self gift
No one else would buy you

  1. I love the way you have filled your cottage with things which you have bought yourself purely because you like them John. I wish I could call in and see you - I would love to see it - it all looks so welcoming.

  3. That's beautiful! You have the best taste at choosing things like that. You could be a decorator!

  5. That made me think of my first idol crush, Ricky Nelson. One of his later songs, "Garden Party", had the lyrics:
"And it's all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself".
Thanks for the happy memory, John! xx

  6. That is nice, and easy to clean too.
Nothing wrong in choosing your own tools for the kitchen!

  7. It really, really is the little things which end up being the big things in the overall scheme of things. That is a very pretty cheese board.

  8. It's not often that another (however loved they may be) can choose a gift we like more than one we choose for ourselves...it's having a loved one who tries to choose something that we miss.
On the other hand, there are the truly awful gifts given by people we cherish...what to do or say about them?! Self gifts are good!

  9. I have a medium size bowl hand carved out of wood. People ask me do I put food in it - no - do I put my keys in it - no - what do I put in it - nothing. So, why do you have it? Because I love it - it's beautiful and nothing I could ever make for myself. Cost? $150.00. Yes, not cheap, but my husband saw the beauty in it and bought it for me when I told him about it. That's why you should buy for yourself, as you have done many items. Because you love them. Yes, Marie Kondo - they bring us joy. Ranee (MN) USA

  11. We get things that give us joy even things that someone else would think "but why?". That's what life is all about. Finding joy.

Hope when you use it with some cheeses spread beautifully upon it, you will share a picture.

  13. You do find the most interesting things, but mostly what I love is how those pieces all seem to fit so well together. I buy things that I love, and what I end up with is a beloved hodge podge. Nothing elegant about it at all.

  14. And much easier to clean than all my home-made wooden ones.

It's lovely when a useful item is also beautiful! Again, well chosen, John.

  18. If something really speaks to you, and you can afford it, then buy it. It will give you pleasure every time you use it. xx

  19. I enjoy those kinds of purchases (and that cheeseboard). We have a tiny shop here called Spainsbury’s. No room for cheeseboards.

  22. Such a nice cheeseboard! I love tactile things and this fits the bill. The fact that cheese sits on it increases the pleasure for me.... mmm cheese!

  24. I have shown the husband your lovely buy and suggested he look out for one in the Hereford Sainsbury’s when he goes in Thursday. We await with excitement Sainsbury’s arriving in Ludlow, I have watched the building going up at speed with barely contained excitement.

I love your treating yourself with home comforts, flowers, pictures and the like, a small reward for the hard work you do. And rightly so.
