Fat Bastards

The weather may remain dry this afternoon
I will resume wall painting then.
In between showers the girls have been jostling for the sunny position on the trendy blue sofa.
I have been making fat rascals for most of the morning

Between 1986 and 1989 I lived in the city of York . Before my late nursing shift start at 1 pm, I would often go to Betty’s tea rooms which is situated in St Helen’s square, to have myself a small Golden carafe of coffee and a fat rascal. There was a single table upstairs which I loved to sit in, where I would pretentiously read my book and scoff my rascal
This morning I made Fat Rascals for the very first time.
Now for those that don’t know a Fat Rascal is a cross between a scone and a bun; in actual fact it is a Rock cake which is filled with fruit, orange zest, whole bleached almonds and glacè cherries.
The last three ingredients make the rascal taste so good
They should be eaten warm with butter and should be large, two handed buns.
I made mine a little smaller than I’d like but they tasted Right Good when I tried them

Years after I had left York for Sheffield , I returned to the city to see some friends. Feeling all nostalgic for a Rascal, I turned left into the shop rather than the cafe and ordered six.
The shop waitress looked surprised at my request
I had ordered Six fat Bastards instead of Six Fat Rascals!!
She got the gist!

I will leave you with this short film called Alex And Jay
It’s a wonderfully acted piece which turns out quite charmingly
I’ve enrolled in another film study course, this one centred around exploration of gay themes within cinema.. it will keep me busy on Thursday nights.

Chic Eleanor has just messaged me, she has booked a table for dinner for us and some friends next week
“ Darling” the message read “ We are embarking on a new beginning”

  2. Fat bastards! Ha! I've never heard of a "fat rascal," but they look excellent. Anything with orange zest wins my vote. I'll check out the movie when I get home.

  6. The blond actor is on a series I watch, "Major crimes" and he plays a young gay man on that show so I wondered why he had a girlfriend.
Your "Fat Bastards" look yummy! Enjoy your dinner!

  7. I'ver never had a "Fat Rascal" or even heard of one before, but they sure sound good!

That's a great short film! I just saw a wonderful Israeli film about gay men, youth and aging. It's called "Sublet" and is worth seeing if you get a chance!

  9. Your description of Fat Rascal as bun, scone, rock cake, and the ingredients, are making me think they are like a fruit cake in bun shape.

Like Debra, I'd never heard of a "Fat Rascal" either. They sound as delicious as they look, so may I ask for your recipe?
Hope the rain holds off until your paint is dry.

    Hugs!

  11. I'm sure my boyfriend at the time preferred his flatmates-my nurse friend who went with one too told me so-I'm not sure what she saw-he was irresistible though. Those bastards look right nice John but if you ever offer one to Eleanor perhaps Rascals sound nicer x

  14. Buns with fruit and nuts sounds delicious. Indecision? Yes? No? Maybe? Sometimes? Why all so very complicated? Just asking?

  21. My wife and I enjoyed a Fat Rascal each in Betty's (a comment that could be misinterpreted without your prior explanation, I suppose). They are very big and fat - a meal in each one. Delicious. My daughter ordered a box of four to be delivered to us one Christmas too. How thoughtful.

    2. Because you deserve it... Maybe make a proper meal of it with one of your fabulous soups followed by Fortnum & Masons Scotch eggs (although Haggis Scotch eggs can also be ordered) and Fat Rascals with lashings of full fat butter to finish, followed by a long burping sleep... (Am I the devilish imp whispering temptation into one ear while the saintly angel on the other shoulder sleeps?)

  22. I have only been to York once, and visited a HUGE pub that was on three stories. The different stories seemed to cater for different ages and tastes of music. Does that ring a bell?

  23. Looks like it will be ages till we can travel to the UK and York to sample a Fat Rascal from Betty's so how about sharing your recipe? It sounds delish.

  24. I once made a better than sex cake. It wasn't.

Also, that little film was indeed charming. Have watched it twice in 20 minutes.

  27. My husband was baffled at the loud guffaw from the waitress when he ordered two teasted toecakes. She knew exactly what he wanted. I get a fit of the giggles when I think about it and toasted teacakes have changed their name in this house forever.

  28. I've never tasted a Fat Rascal let alone made one, but they sound delicious. I used to make Rock Cakes all the time for my boys when they were little, so much easier to dollop the mixture out on the tray than faff about cutting out scones. 😄
