The Fast Ghost

I didn’t tell you all but I think I saw a ghost the other week.
I wasn’t shocked or frightened, just rather intrigued.
I was at work.
It was around four am in the morning and I just told my colleagues that I was going to pop out to my car to collect some paperwork.
When I got up, so did they for when I returned we had a succession of turns and syringe driver checks to do, and as I exited the unit through the electric doors I felt and sort of saw Ruth , my fellow nurse,  move very quickly behind me to enter a patient’s room immediately to my right.
I collected the paperwork from my car, and as I returned to the hospice , I felt strangely unsettled by the “ quickness “ of Ruth’s movement, so much so that I asked if she had indeed entered the patient’s room so rapidly.
She denied that she had. Nor indeed had our fellow fellow support worker, the only other able bodied person inside the unit .
But I knew what I felt.
I felt and half saw a figure move behind me into the patients room with some gusto.

Last week I worked nights again but this time with another nurse. This nurse is well known for her spiritual experiences and comically is referred to by her colleagues being a bit of a white witch.
She is also one of the most pragmatic and talented hospice nurses I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
I asked her about her experiences on nights without explaining any details of my own “ visitation’  and
she told me that knew only of two recent ‘visitors’ .
One she described as a man , who stands quietly on one corner of the hospice away from any other activity
“ And the other? “ I pressed her
“ oh the other is an odd bod” she said cheerfully “ it’s a figure that moves from this corridor into the first of the  patient bedrooms” she pointed to where I had seen my “ ghost”
“ she really IS  a odd bod too ,” my colleague added
“ why’s that? “ I asked gingerly
She always moves very fast like a bullet ...always from right to left” she told me with a gentle smile

This used to scare me shitless as a child

  1. I love a ghost story and as I worked in a hospice on both days and nights like you, I thought maybe I would experience something but I never did - unlike some of my colleagues. One night 2 of the nurses both witnessed a figure walking to and fro at the end of a corridor. It disappeared out of view and they ran down thinking a patient was out of bed and wandering. The 4 patients down that end were all asleep and none of them had relatives staying with them. All external doors were alarmed so no one could have entered unannounced. I'm sure the story will be told to many a new member of staff to freak them out!

  2. Your ghost sounds a benign creature, checking on the patients. I've never experienced a ghost, but my hubby (a serious non-believer in such things) and my daughter have both seen things that can't be easily explained. Hubby reckons he was tired and what he saw was his mind playing tricks, but I'm not so sure. xx

  3. The only ghost I have seen is my first little pug, who died 11 years ago. I see him from the corner of my eye, hear his nails clicking on the bare wood floor. One night I had tucked Mo my current pug into bed but went to the kitchen for a glass of water. A pug was following me. Thought it was Mo, and scolded, "I just put you to bed!~" A pug was definitely there with me briefly in the kitchen, then he headed to the back door to go out. I ignored this as I didn't want to encourage bad habits. BUT when I went back to the bedroom, Mo was in his bed, under his blankie, snoring away. He had not gotten up, or he'd have uncovered his blanket.

That was dearest Puck come to visit me. Next time I will stop and love him, I still miss him so much.

I also sometimes, now and then hear my mom calling by name. She died the same year as Puck.

  4. Funny, most ghost stories like this I've heard happen in workplaces. It's kind of nice to think of them as eccentric colleagues, like Professor Binns in the Harry Potter series, who could never quite leave their jobs behind.

  5. I think my Grandma visited me but as a child I was frightened.I occasionally glance a shadow in the sitting room and pictures more than I would expect seem to fling onto the floor. The nephew of the previous lady here asked if I'd seen the ghost but I have not clearly yet.The Reiki person told me of a presence in the front room. There is still an unexplained shadow from where my darling top dog sat out through the window to the sky x

  6. Spirits who can't accept that they have to move on? I saw one, once, in broad daylight, high on the fells above Keswick and with a friend who also saw him. He passed to our right hand side, and we said 'Hello'. He, (an old man in a top hat and tail coat) touched his hat in recognition of us. Almost immediately, we turned round, as he was such a strange and unlikely hillwalker...and there was no-one there. I do believe that death is not the end of our conciousness, this meeting seemed to confirm this. It remains a special experience in my life almost 40 years later.

  7. Ooooh! Spooky! I loved Alison's comment about them being like eccentric colleagues, a la Professor Binns, but then I thought....How shitty would that be, dying and then never being able to leave your WORKPLACE behind?! Not where I'd want to spend eternity, as much as I like my job. :)

  9. It's only with age and experience that we learn that it's the living we need to fear. I must add that as much as I believe people who "see" spirits I am one of the unfortunate ones who believe nothing that I have not seen myself. Oh to possess any kind of spirituality that would assist in making sense of this fucked up life.

  12. When I was a teenager I shared a room with my brother. The door to the room was at the foot of my bed, beyond the door was a small hallway and in the left corner was the glass door to the porch. If the bedroom door was open the light coming into the porch door would silhouette anyone in the doorway. One night I woke and the door was open. I turned on my back and looked down the bed and over my feet. A figure stood in the doorway. It was neither my mother or father and the light from the porch door shone around but also through the figure. It moved. I cried out "NO!" and it was gone. My brother woke and thought I'd had a nightmare but I had no sensation of waking, I was awake all of the time. It has been more than 45 years but I still avoid sleeping where I can't keep my eye on the door.

  15. I was reading a book about phenomena around near death experiences and end of life. Apart from the ghost have you experienced patients 'seeing' visitors that were not there or light emanating from a room?

  16. I’ve had two visitations in the years since my husband's death. The forst was a man with a serious countenance, none to pleasant facial experience before he left. I was startled but not frightened. Years later a young woman with long blond hair visited me. Again, I was not frightened, just surprised. I could make no connection to anyone in my life or activities in which i had been engaged that day or surrounding days. I’ve never given too much thought to this sort of thing but have had my interest aroused given these events.

  21. Once I was dropping my children off at a summer camp at a nature center. I was driving out. They had a 'village' set up. A farm house. A school house. A blacksmith shop. These were old buildings taken apart and reassembled on the grounds of the nature center. The buildings were used to demonstrate the old ways. The school house was where kids learned lessons and experienced time in a one room school house. Anyways, I was driving out of the nature center, and I caught a glimpse of a woman in an old fashioned dress with a high collar. She was looking out the school house window. It was a bit of a shock. The village didn't open up for programs for another 3 hours. The windows had that thick wavy glass. I convinced myself that it was likely a trick of the morning sun on the old wavy glass, but I will always wonder.

  22. I worked for 18 years in a medical office that had a couple of resident spirits. The building had previously been a church about 50 years earlier and had been remodeled to a medical office. Only a few people ever saw the spirits but many of us either heard or saw the results of them. It kept life interesting. I felt very comfortable with them.

  23. Last fall, Sept. & Oct., I would often wake up hearing a sound as if someone was rearranging the sheets on the bed, but with no movement. I couldn't figure out for some time what it was I was hearing, until it dawned on me it was a rustling of angels' wings. I spoke with a long-time friend who has some gifts in contacting them; this woman is a former work colleague from the 1980s, and she hasn't been to my current house, where I've lived for 20 years. She confirmed that it was angels and that my people from the other side wanted me to know they were caring for me and watching out for me. Then this friend asked them to identify something in my house so I could confirm their visit. She gave an exact description of two items near each other in my house. My beloved oldest sister died in late October after a long illness, and I believe the angels came to offer me their support. I wasn't afraid at all. I generally take a pretty disinterested view of stories like this, but I've had a couple of experiences that I felt were truthful.

  26. Those titles for the 'Edgar Wallace Mysteries' [still replaying on Channel 81] are, for me, just about the creepiest title sequences ever - both way back on first transmission when I was an impressionable young thing right up to even now.

As for ghosts, though never having seen one myself, I get exasperated when hearing those dismissing the very idea as 'rubbish' when I'm just as sure that 'SOMETHING' is going on which we've yet to identify and explain. I find the concept more intriguing than frightening.

I'll let you know when I'm ready, and hope that by the time I am the quiz hasn't become just a part of your past.

And btw re ghosts - isn't it curious that so many of these sightings have the apparition doing the same thing over and over endlessly? - like walking across a certain space and disappearing into a wall, just like a stuck broken record?

I wonder why people who see these "ghosts" see them in clothes, dressed in the fashion of the era they died, yet their clothes would have been disposed of by their relatives after their death. Does fabric have a "spirit" of it's own that can make it reappear long after it's been destroyed? Or are we naïve in not wanting to accept that once a person is dead there's nothing left, the body rots or is burned and that's it, there's no body left to inhabit whether "spirit" exists or not.

I firmly believe in afterlifexand that my boys have a guardian angel as things have happened which could have gone the other way. I also see more Robin's than I ever did since dad died. I think and hope hes visiting me. Prob I am crazy. I know you have posted about your village ghost. Stay safe from the living and the dead. But as one person said living are more dangerous. 29. We used to work at an old hospital in Rochester in Kent. There was a Grey Lady who would appear in the corridor of the children's wing, before a child died. Many pf the nurses including my husband ,did not like to go there at night. We also lived in a 500year old house and my children used to see an old man on the stairs. I told them to say hello to him and they were quite happy about him after that.

  30. I think that I heard a ghostly voice. I was at Mum's house a few years after Dad had died. I was in the kitchen next to another small room and Mum was round several corners sitting quietly in another room.. There was a loud man's voice calling.....aah, aah, aah or something like that. The only thing nearby that could make it's own noise was the "lifeline" telephone, but before that spoke you had to have pressed the button and then there were lots of other noises before anyone spoke. Not sure where the dog was, but probably with mum. Neither of them seemed to hear anything ( Mum was deaf anyway).
Also, about 5 yrs ago I was here, at the computer, when I heard a bang in the back room. Nobody else in the house.....2 framed photos had fallen off the sideboard, face down on the carpet. One at the front of the sideboard and one at the side. Both photos of my family including my sons. My eldest son's wife left him unexpectedly not long after...but that might be a bit fanciful. Could never figure out how the photos fell by themselves!

    2. There's an interesting book written about it, too, by a Canadian journalist who researched the subject. It's a long time since I read it but if/when I remember the title and author I'll let you know. She learned that more than 50% of the population have had "otherworldly" and inexplicable experiences and that most of them never tell anyone else for fear of some fool who thinks they know everything like Anonymous up there disrespecting their experience. My mom saw her mother-in-law, on the day of her funeral, come into the bedroom where she and Dad slept, as she always used to do when they visited when Grandma was alive. She'd come in, walk around the foot of the bed to the window, put the blind up, and tell them it was time to rise and shine. Mom never told Dad, as she believed he'd react with scorn and insist she'd been dreaming, instead of taking comfort from it. She only told me when nearing her own death, and because she'd seen Grandma that one time 58 years ago, she had no fear of dying. -Kate

Back in 1984 I was a student nurse and the ward above us had sightings of a ghost. That particular part of the hospital was Victorian and the layout of the 'nurses station' was at the top of the open plan ward with a curtain drawn around the top two beds either side of the station to avoid light disturbing them. On one side, was a washbasin for the nurses to clean their hands and the curtains reached to about 10" from the ground. One night, a fellow student reported that she had walked back from the bottom of the ward towards the nurses' station and seen the back of someone's legs at the washbasin apparently washing their hands. When she asked who it was, the staff nurse replied that the second nurse was on her break and she herself had been in the office. Apparently this was not the first 'sighting'.

A few years after my dad died, I was in church one Sunday morning and after we'd all stood up for a hymn, there - in my peripheral vision - was my father. He was standing to my left, holding a hymnal, singing, and rocking back and forth toes to heels as he always did when singing in church. I was afraid to blink and when I had to blink, he disappeared.
When I've been in bed about to sleep, I've many times had the sensation someone has sat down on the side of the bed near my feet. No one is ever visible and it is totally creepy. Yikes!

    Hugs!

A friend was working in the cellar of a shop in Colchester in about 2000, he turned around and saw a group of Roman soldiers march through the wall, pass by him (he was about 10' away) and disappear through the end wall. Startled, he asked the owner if what he had seen had been true and the owner replied, 'oh yes, there is an old Roman road under the cellar, and Colchester was an important Roman town'.

Living in a Georgian house in Old London as a child, the local aea was full of Ghosty type vibes. Foggy nights, gaslight street lighting, creepy old buildings and gothic graveyards in tbe local churches. I would scare myself witless. I don't think it helped by me managing to watch a series on tv called ' Tales of Mystery and Imagination'. This was adapted from Edgar Allen Poe type stories. Not suitable watching for an impressionable child

  56. I've never actually seen a ghost, but certainly have felt their presence. There are so many instances in my Dad's house it's hard to pick one, but this has always stuck out for me. My brother lived next door and told me that the touch lamp that was in the living room would be on in the morning when he went to work, even though he knew he had shut it off the night before. This happened after my Dad had passed away. Also, a couple of nights after he died, we were talking about the ghosts he had seen in the house (a woman holding the hands of two children) and the all four lights in the ceiling fan flashed twice as bright as they should have, went out and then came back on. We were all a little freaked out.

  57. Our cottage is 170 years old. We brought it from a 'new age' type couple who had decorated the house with appalling colour choices. (Dark blue bedroom ceiling, made you feel you were lying in a coffin, every time you got into bed lol) It took 3 weeks of hard graft and gallons of white paint to get rid of their colour scheme.
Throughout this time, we had lights and smoke detectors turning on and off of their own accord at all times of the day and night - around the same time, I visited a fortune teller, and as I was leaving she said, 'You have a spirit in your new home and he is so pleased that you're putting the house back straight. He loved that house and didn't like what your predecessors had done to it. He planted something red in the garden you know', I went home and checked the garden, there was nothing red there at all. We called our spirit Sid.
As we got straight the lights stopped flickering on and off and we forgot about it all until the following winter when a bush in the garden turned bright red, it was an old dogwood.
So perhaps it was Sid and we hope he's happy with the house now, there is one corner in the kitchen next to where the old range would have been (now the log burner) that has a feeling of 'peace' and over the years we've watched that the chair in that corner is always the one that is never empty, when family or friends visit. As one person vacates the chair, someone else moves into it - we call it Sid's corner xx

I work in a skilled nursing facility that has been in operation since the 1960's. I've never personally seen anything, but have heard from co-workers about various spooky happenings in and around Room 23 over the years, especially at night. This included a 9-1-1 emergency call being placed from the room once when the patient in it at the time was comatose and couldn't have dialed the number.
Another co-worker swore she heard a voice saying 'Get out!' when she was in a small medical supply room off of one of the nurse's stations. She happily complied!
I'm not sure I believe in ghosts, but I don't discount people's experiences, either. I feel like I'd have to experience something myself before I could really believe.

  60. Coming in late with this one. Early 1970s, working nights on Colman ward at the Jenny Lind children's hospital on Unthank Rd, Norwich. My partner had gone on her break. I was walking among the beds and looked back to the tiny office, I saw someone standing there. I was surprised as I hadn't heard the door open which was solid wood and about eight inches thick. Thinking it was a doctor I tried to make out which one as I walked towards the office. What I saw was a very old lady with long white or yellow hair. She stared at me. The ward had become freezing cold. I was convinced whatever it was it had come for a very ill child we were nursing. I forced myself to continue walking to the child's bedside reasoning I was young and healthy and might act as a barrier and misdirect the "visitor". As soon as I reached the bedside the apparition disappeared and the ward regained its normal temperature. I wasn't particularly freaked out but when I told me co worker she was! The story flew round the hospital and before I knew it I was being interviewed by admin due to frightened students refusing to be left alone on the wards. Fortunately it was a woman of integrity and experience who believed me when I said I had made an honest account and had not expected the rumour mill to take off. It has made me cautious of repeating the story. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the Jenny Lind.

  61. I was a student nurse in year 1 at a Childrens Hospital on nights.
We had a very ill 13 month old with a brain tumour who was terminal. It was very sad.
The child was distressed in her sleep and made moany noises, but now and then there was a smell of flowers and she would giggle. Sister had no idea why this was.
Later that night, I was sitting at the desk with the Sister and we had a small lamp on to do our paperwork by. I heard the ward door open and glanced up to see who was coming down the ward ( maybe Night Sister or the Houseman).
I looked up and down and then back up again in amazement/Disbelief/horror. The apparition had disappeared, but as I said to the Sister, " Did you see........?" She interrupted me saying, " No I didn't see HER, and neither did you!!!" .
It was only after that I realised I hadn't said it was a female I had seen. I saw a nurse in a long dress to the floor with a long nurses cap and a long white apron.
This was 1981 at Birmingham Childrens Hospital which was Edwardian.

  63. One more story for you. I was driving home quite late one night. It was August, and a beautiful full moon. As I rounded a curve I thought I saw a girl by the side of the road. She had long blonde hair, and was wearing a yellow sleeveless dress with little blue flowers on it. I thought how odd that she would be there that time of night, but remembered that a young girl had been killed there in a car accident some 5 years before. There was a roadside memorial and I thought maybe the girl I saw was replacing the flowers. These thoughts were very fleeting, and I looked into my rear view mirror to see if the girl was indeed leaving flowers. But she wasn't there. Several weeks later I was talking to a friend who lives in the house right by the accident site, and I told her what I saw, adding that she probably thought I was crazy. She said, "No, you've just explained something to me. That accident happened right after we moved here, and our daughter was just a baby. But later, when she was walking and talking, she'd sometimes ask me, "Mommy, who is that girl over there? Why is that girl sitting on your car?"

  64. I worked in a hospital, in the very old wing that was once patient rooms but converted to billling/business offices. I often saw diaphanous shapes going from the hallway into the patient rooms. Also, once when I was working there by myself on a Saturday I heard people laughing and talking but could never find anyone around. Didn't scare me, because when my husband was terminally ill with AIDS and about 3 weeks from death, I saw "angels" continuously coming in our apartment, circling his bed, and then leaving again. I am a believer.
