Snow and Hemingway

The snow has fallen fast over the Eastern Welsh hills, so much so that I just had time to buy some logs  before Bluebell slid precariously over the road East of the village

I was glad to have finished work for a week. I am tired

Last night I slept on my break , my head resting in my hand

had a dream that I was dating the writer Ernest Hemingway, I’ve always had a bit of thing for him

He had a thick moustache and heavy stubble and wore a blue woolen jumper with a hole at the neck and he had a touch of dandruff

He also looked 60 which surprised me as I only consider myself as a “young” middle age thing

But he had the voice like chocolate and kissed like Doris Day every time I passed him in the kitchen doorway

So I didn’t mind much

He also stood smiling at me as I hurried around the cottage looking for Mary to walk before I went to work.

And I tried to cling onto that image when my phone called me back from break with a vibrating tinkle

I was very pissed off that it was a dream

very

  1. It is nice to have dreams like that but so disappointing to wake up! People don't usually have faces or voices in my dreams but I 'sense' who they are. A few months ago I had a dream that I was walking along a street when a tall man walked up close to my side and walked with me and became part of me. I felt so safe and secure as though he was looking out for me. Whenever I feel down I think back to that dream and how loved and protected I felt. The memory of it gives me strength.

  3. Content yourself with knowing that to say he hit the bottle is an understatement John - and whiskers on the scale of that photograph prickle so maybe it wouldn't have been that good an idea. But a fellow can dream.

John has a beard veering towards that scale too so they'd be able to prickle each other!

  4. Your post reminded me of Manic Monday, where The Bangles sing about kissing Valentino by a crystal blue Italian stream.
And we've had snow on the ground for some days now. Winter is here!

  10. I don't normally have dreams about well-known people but do remember a couple, one in which a shirtless Harrison Ford was digging a ditch in my back garden - this was in his younger days, and more recently (before Covid though) I dreamt I was in a queue for the ladies loo in a theatre - so of course I was queuing outside the loos as the queue was so long, and I handed 3 loo rolls to Benedict Cumberbatch....

The cottage looks lovely in the snow. Next year's Christmas card, perhaps? And your footsteps in the snow seem very comforting, somehow.

I think all of us who are now alone have that sort of dream, which is human contact and assurance. My late husband had a similar beard to Hemingway. Most people think that despite being married for over forty years the fact I never did see his chin is hilarious! As for the fantasy dream, well, there is a saying that kissing a man without a beard is like eating a meal without salt and pepper. What can I say? X

  20. A man quite worthy of a sweet dream. When I got to visit Cuba, we were able to visit his house there, his little ranch. It felt as if he would come walking up at any moment, asking us what we thought we were doing, peering into the windows of his house.

  23. I've only ever read two Hemingways - 'Old Man and the Sea' [around 30 years ago] and 'Farewell to Arms' [all of 50+ years since]. Can't recall ether of the stories.
His keen-ness for spectating at bullfights has always been a block to prevent my exploring further. Perhaps ought to give him another chance before it's too late - for me, that is.
Must say that I do see quite an attraction in the photo of his older self.

Btw: Just heard on the news that the latest (even) more easily transferable strain of the you-know-what is now running extra-rampant in north Wales. I've no doubt that you're already aware of it and are taking yet more stringent precautions. Do stay safe.

  29. Hemingway was a wonderful writer but he was a mess as a human being -- undiagnosed mental health issues that today could probably have been effectively treated. He WAS handsome although I prefer him in his younger, clean-shaven years. :)

Is there no one at work that knows of a gentleman to suit you John?-As times are difficult at the moment perhaps you could reach out for a socially distanced relationship with a Hemingway lookalikey-I'm sure one of your colleagues or friends must know him as he is surely out there somewhere John xx

  33. "... kissed like Doris Day". An interesting comparison which surprises me in two ways, first, that you have kissed Doris Day, in order to be able to compare; second, that you would want to kiss Doris Day. Am I dreaming?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I hope the warmth of that dream stays with you. I notice that the dream was set in your cottage - you’re home, you’re centred there, and that’s so important. I wouldn’t touch a problem drinker with a forty foot pole, no matter how sexy they look. I’m glad Bluebell did no worse than slide across the road, it could’ve been a lot worse! Enjoy your days off.

I had what must be (though I've not heard it described before) quite a common kind of 'covid anxiety' dream the other night. I was walking down our road and people kept walking up too close to me so I had to back off.

  36. I thank you John, for offering an oasis from the craziness here in the US. I've had two dreams in my teenage years that I still remember vividly to this day: one of a sexy Black man in a white suit, the other of the most delicious chocolate cake that I was JUST about to take a bite of when I awoke. So, I feel your waking pain!

After the second crash, the writer was presumed dead, but walked out of the jungle the next day, still holding a bottle of gin."
