I have a spare bedroom in the East Wing of the cottage.
It’s small and full of clutter at the moment.
A Victorian copper bedstead and mattress , a book case, an Art Deco grandmother clock, old books, a carpet cleaner.
This week I’ve decided to make a proper study.
A simple one, with less fussy walls and decor.
A desk, a chair and the bed complete with an antique french bedspread , I bought last year but never used
It’s a small room and it needs to be simple
I need a place with limited distractions, if I am to write
So today, I’ve been shopping
I’ve not only ordered a new phone , but a desk and an office chair
The paint I already have, the gentle buttercup yellow of the living room.
You have been busy. I'm sure you'll enjoy your new space. Photos expected once it's all done. xx
ReplyDeleteOf course dear tart x
DeleteWill look forward to seeing your progress. Sounds like a great project.
ReplyDeleteWhat larks pip
DeleteIs that the desk you bought? I love it, nice clean lines and it looks as if it won't take up an enormous amount of space
ReplyDeleteYes, I wanted one from John Lewis , this one from marks and spencer
DeleteWhy not purchase the one that you wanted?
DeleteIt was twice as expensive and I must be realistic x
DeleteMight it be possible at some point to replace the legs of the desk you bought to metal legs more like the John Lewis occasional table in your sitting room? Just a thought. Carol in Philly
DeleteThe original desk I wanted had legs like that ...
DeleteAre you keeping the wallpaper? I’ve got that very same one in my spare room. It may have rarity value in years to come as it’s from the now defunct Laura Ashley... The desk looks smashing btw. Hope the view from the window isn’t too distracting. x
ReplyDeleteYes I think I will , the view from the window has been screened by the development of a new build cottage in ca garden behind my cottage
DeleteCan't wait to see how it turns out! Keep us posted!
ReplyDeleteWill do x
DeleteBut where will Your new Friend to be sleep now John?x
ReplyDeleteThe bed will always stay for guests ...just a bed and desk and chair
DeleteThe desk is perfect, just the right size for a small room. Good luck with the writing!
ReplyDeleteThank u xx
DeleteWhat a coincidence, today I started cleaning out the bedroom in the east wing of my cottage, with the intention of creating an office/study. I have to dig out first, so you are ahead of me.
ReplyDeleteTwins!!!
DeleteI know that urge. After having family living with us for almost 2 years, we finally have the house to ourselves, and have spent the past 2 months reorganizing and re-arranging almost every room. The Cottage is fully yours now, and every room should reflect that! You've done a wonderful job with the sitting room and kitchen so far.
ReplyDeleteI’m saving like mad for the bathroom
DeleteSounds a good idea. I keep thinking, if I can't go outside, I could at least change the inside.
ReplyDeleteAnd the the big job,,,the bathroom from hell
DeleteStanding desks are really good. Not cheap though.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn’t lol
DeleteLooks like you might have to fight Albert for use of the room, though.
ReplyDeleteHe wins everytime by stealth
DeleteThat’s a great desk! I always love seeing Albert.
ReplyDeleteXoxo
Barbara
He’s still very clingy at the moment
DeleteOh darn, I thought one of us was going to win and invitation to come stay. Pooh.
ReplyDeleteThe spare bed will always be ready for guests x
Deletei love projects like this. it will be wonderful to have an office of your own.
ReplyDeleteThe office chair is lovely too. Modern and grey
DeleteGood choice. Does that mean you're ready to write your book?
ReplyDeleteI’ve planned it
Deleteoh no, are you going to disturb albert's sleeping spot???
ReplyDeletesounds like a good project to complete whilst you are off.
I need a project we all do
DeleteYes, what will Albert have to say. Bookcases?
ReplyDeleteNo bookcases
DeleteThey are in the bedroom
Nice to have a study but also nice to work sitting by the fire in winter.
ReplyDeleteI want to recl
DeleteReclaim the room
DeleteA Victorian mattress sounds unappealing 🤪
ReplyDeleteThe frame is Victorian the mattress is 2009 marks and spencer
DeleteEven someone who lives alone needs a designated room of his own. I'm very serious about this. Can't wait to see what you write.
ReplyDeleteXxx
DeleteThat sounds like a calm and restful place you're creating. I'm looking forward to the results of the writing progress, and I love the simple lines of the desk. Enjoy your holiday.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy will not quite be the word , but I want it to b useful
DeleteAn ideal study does also need a cat, or dog, or both, so you are well furnished there. I wish you fruitful writing. There will probably be times when it feels dispiriting, but if that happens I suggest an accepting break, for the spirit will likely return. Walking helps, I find.
ReplyDeleteIndeed to pick your brains methinks
DeleteWell done! I love the desk and I'm glad you are keeping Albert's bed. I sense the beginnings of your book. How very right for 2021.
ReplyDeleteI’ve organised it
DeleteExcellent progress! My sitting room is the same colour, and it is very restful. Having Albert help you write will be very encouraging! A lovely little room! Perfect for thinking beautiful thoughts!
ReplyDeleteAnd a few risqué ones
DeleteSlap your wrist! You are being naughty again!
DeleteNo, don't change the wallpaper..it goes well with the quilt, and Albert.
ReplyDeleteGood to have an uncluttered study.
I wasn’t it almost bare with three pieces of art
DeleteYou're a whirlwind when you get going, that's brilliant work. I hope the bedroom is warm enough to sit and write - though you could always huddle in the duvet!
ReplyDeleteYes it has a radiator which is heated by the log burner
DeleteOh, good for you. And Albert looks right at home, already. Very smart.
ReplyDeleteIt was an old photo but he does like hiding in the bedroom
DeleteThe more time we spend stuck in our homes, the more projects we discover! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteIt needs to be done , the last room to reclaim
DeleteI think it will work out very well.
ReplyDeleteI do too
DeletePost pictures of the new space when you can.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a tiny space mick but I will
DeleteIf you needed inspiration, I do believe the changes you are making will assist you with that. However, having read so much of what you've written here, I don't think you lack inspiration - I just hope you can keep up with everything that has been living in your head and get it all down on paper. And I am grateful that you are going to share it with us. Something else to look forward to. Ranee (MN) USA
ReplyDeleteThank you Rae
DeleteU are right x
What a stellar idea! The delightful shade of yellow from the sitting room will certainly be perfect in the new study, as will some of your homeless art, and the bed will still welcome Albert, if not Mary and Dorothy, too. I hope the Grandmother clock and bookcase will stay, albeit with different books on it if you so choose.
ReplyDeletePhotos, ASAP, please and thank you. :)
Hugs!
I will sell the grandmother clock and bookcase
DeleteWay to go, my friend! I can't wait to see it. And THEN!!!!! you'll be writing down your stories. I'm so glad you've made a commitment to that. You're wonderfully talented with words. I'm getting old, so please don't procrastinate, lol.
ReplyDeleteThis year has taught us all not to procrastinate x
DeleteThis is a great plan. It will be wonderful to have a dedicated space to write.
ReplyDeleteToday I took advantage of a spare hour and rearranged furniture in a room, dusted and vacuumed. I keep wandering in to take another look. It is the small things, isn't? Ps I'd still like to see your clock. I hope you don't rush through that comment.
ReplyDeleteI will post a photo
DeleteI adore the wallpaper so I'm glad you are thinking of keeping it.
ReplyDeleteNice desk, a great space to work and nap
ReplyDeleteWill you be hand writing or keyboard ?
ReplyDeleteKeyboard I have a new lap top
DeleteVery nicely reclaimed. Victorian with modern. A quiet well decorated office space to support your writing process. Well done.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to keep the bookcase to hold dictionary, thesaurus, printer paper, printer supplies ... typical office supplies that you will be needing.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing how the room ends up!
I may get one of those lean to bookcases
DeleteIt is so easy to clutter unused space and so refreshing to repurpose it from the catch all. I think on your side of the ocean it's called the lumber room.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a satisfying job this will be. Can't wait to see the after pictures. And the antique French bedspread (will that be off-limits to your four-footed family?).
ReplyDeleteWow! And I love the idea of a bed for Albert. I claimed my study (the box room) some years ago and use it for research and writing. (Two books for Pen & Sword so far.) One suggestion: have the desk at right angles to the window. That way you can swivel round to look at anything of interest, but otherwise focus on the screen. Plus you might want e.g. a basket for folders of notes. Though as I look around I realise mine is an extremely cluttered room. Yours will be far more effective! Jxx
ReplyDeleteThat's so exciting, the room is going to look lovely and it will no doubt encourage you to write, the yellow paint is so cheerful, looks like Albert will have first dibs on the bed.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I love your choice of desk too. Albert will still find ways to relax in the room.
ReplyDeleteXO
The new study will be all ready for when you finally start to write the John Gray autobiography....
ReplyDeleteI have a study and love it! It makes a big difference having a dedicated room for working in.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to thank you for your time for this fantastic read!! Great!
