A Final Sausage

The Welsh lockdown starts at midnight
Lucky I’ve already done a big shop this week.
I made a small turkey lasagne for supper tonight, and as I was doing so I found several left over cocktail sausages hidden away on the fridge shelf.
I gave the dogs the sausages with their tea and kept one aside
I know I’m a bit of a show girl but I thought it apt that I tearfully planted it with Winnie’s ashes that had already been scattered on the flower beds

She would have loved that

  8. A very sweet gesture. Over here it would be considered the equivalent of "one for my homie".

  9. That's lovely. Will you plant the rosebush in a special spot near the ashes? [will the rose bush survive planted now?]

  11. That is so beautiful and so fitting, John! A fitting tribute to that fabulous woman dog, Winnie. She will always be around the cottage in spirit.

I haven't decided what to do with my Ginger's ashes. They're still in the pretty container they came in, up on a shelf in the closet with a small portion of my mother-in-law's ashes. My MIL would have liked to know that...she and Ginger loved each other.

  13. Awww. When my mum died we tucked a wine cask and glass in her casket with the local shopping weekly brochure. Dad took a comb and hankie, and his library card.

If it was a cremation the glass would have been removed before cremating, glass isn't allowed as traces of glass may get into others ashes.

  14. I give my cats an "Egyptian burial," with a can of food and a brush and maybe a favorite toy. I get some idle amusement pondering what some archeologist a century or three down the road coming across them will make of these early 21st century burial customs.

A lovely tribute to grand old Winnie!
I'm glad your larder is full since the lock down would curtail additional shopping. Are there any Scotch eggs waiting to be a Christmas week treat for you?

    Hugs!

  21. The more we learn about early humans, the more we realize that we have always honored our beloved dead. And so do some animals. You did what nature decreed you to do and I applaud you for that.

  25. As in ancient Egypt, we send our animals off with their favourite possessions, a snack for the journey, and a few kind words.

  26. It makes a heap of sense to me. One of our cats was buried with an avocado - because he loved them, and could rarely get enough to satisfy him (and he had never been given a whole one before).

  28. I didn't dare or want to ask about the dear one's 'disposal' but now that we know, this is a really lovely and thoughtful closure for our glamour girl. Thank you.

  29. A fitting send off, John. We wrapped our old cat in her favourite blanket and buried her with a catnip mouse. We then planted the area with Pansies- her name. If the new owners ever did deeply close to the trees they’re in for a surprise! You so often get me digging through the memories, thank you John.

  30. Talk of turkey reminds me of a story you (I think) told years ago about being given a turkey by a farmer who, when you wondered aloud what to call it, if I remember, suggested you called it "f***in'lucky"?

Until someone has deeply loved then lost a pet they don't understand the bond that exists between human and animal. Especially dogs, the most loyal animal on the planet.
I recently lost my beloved dog, just before you lost Winnie, I have his ashes in a heart shaped urn with paw prints engraved on the top. Next to it is his photograph and his favourite toy. I don't know how long I'll keep them there but right now it's a comfort to touch and talk to him and that's all that matters. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, whether they think I'm losing the plot talking to ashes. I've always had a dog but this time I feel so bereft I can't even think of having another one.
Thank you for this post John and I can understand your smile at planting the sausage in amongst your sadness.

  40. I'm surprised that Winnie didn't come back from the dead to hoover it all up.

It must feel good to have her home again. We had planned to spread our dog's ashes on my in-laws grave as they adored each other, but in the end I couldn't bring myself to do that and nine years later, she is still in her urn in our living room. Once we brought her home, we felt that she belonged here with us.
