Swallows and Hangovers

I met my friend for dinner last night and both of us are suffering from a gin based hangover from hell this morning.
I took the girls up the Gop to blow away the cobwebs and burped pink gin at almost every step.
Lovely.
Looking down on the village, it is easy to see the older houses of Trelawnyd.
As in many Welsh villages the older houses have names rather than house numbers to tell them apart and these names are officially linked to the house postcode so cannot easily be changed.
My cottage is called Bwthyn y Llan which literally means Church Cottage.
The more historic name for it and it’s sister cottage next door was Tan y Fynwent which literally means under the graveyard.
I always liked the name Mrs Miniver gave to her home.
It was simply called Starlings, and with that in mind I have just hung some cheerful blue birds on the front of the cottage

Hey ho

  2. My sister named her house "Swallow". They had found an old bottle in the garden with swallow written on it and they loved it. It was only later that they realised the bottle was a medicine bottle!

  3. I have a vacation home in a village by the sea and it has a name instead of numbers. It is very unusual in the U.S. The only drawback is that we cannot get mail delivered and have to have a postal box in a mail center. Your bluebirds are charming.

  4. Love the birds! We call our place "Mud Farm" because the first year we moved here we got stuck in our driveway. It really doesn't apply now. A lovely country setting a mile from the city limits of a town of less than 6000 people.

  5. I like the idea of giving a name to your place. My husband would probably just want to slap HIS name on it. Which is okay, I guess, because in the Lord of the Rings stories, that name signifies 'a safe place'.

Love your charming blue birds, your cottage's name (not the graveyard one), and today's post. If our place had a name, it might be Bideawee.
Hope those hangover headaches are gone.

    Hugs!

  10. My home is called, 'Mime'. On the nameplate it has an acute accent over the last e, so should be pronounced 'meemay'. Who names a house Mime and why??? I wish I could change it but it's such a hassle.

  11. John, the blue swallows are lovely. Our 1700's home had a fire on one side of it years ago and moved a "sugarhouse" from across the road - attached it to the home. It was so beautifully rustic with a huge fireplace. We called it "The Sugarhouse Suite," and had many guests visit, including a small wedding outdoors. Our home now in Maine is called "The Enchanted Cottage." We downsized and it's a boring little ranch but we've charmed it up with gardens, vines, and an Italian ceramic plaque on the royal blue front door w/ that name. My fave color is blue. As you do, I favor blue and yellow. Hugs.

  16. I love the film Mrs Miniver. Hope the walk cleared your head. My Great Gran lived at Woodbine Cottage, when I was young I thought it was because she was a heavy smoker.

  17. Same where I live, no house numbers. A small village, smaller than yours, but we have a Mill Cottage and a Mill House, a Church Cottage that looks like a house and isn’t that close to the church, a Hall Cottage that isn’t as close to the hall. So different from odd numbers on inside of the street and evens on the other.

  20. My husband, who rode a trike, jokingly named our house Trikietowers (there are no towers). Another joker friend bought a nameplate with Trikietowers on and screwed it to the front of the house one new year's morning (remarkably straight in a whiskey induced hangover). A third joker sent a postcard from France to 'Trikietowers, Kidderminster, UK', which arrived 3 days later! Trikietowers it remains.

  23. Charming. Our town names all its apartment buildings. The old houses have names and some new ones, too. Quite often, those who grew up here know them easily by their names. I used to always give the address first, but was then was invariably asked for the name.

  31. love the blue birds, such a pretty colour and a lovely splash of colour against the stone of the cottage :) Our house is called St Abbs, most likely because the wife of the master mariner who had the house built in 1903 was from St Abbs. Originally it was St Abbs Villa (a number of houses with "Villa" as part of the name here) but that got dropped at some point. I like that our house name has such a personal connection to the original owners :)

  33. The birds look lovely. Yes, the names stay with the cottages here, we didn't even consider changing ours, but our neighbour did many years ago. Although now I think she regrets it as she is so firmly rooted in Wales her English house name seems strange even to her.

I love both the versions of your cottage's name!
