If you ever want to taste what it is like to sing in a choir, have a look at the Swedish movie , As it is in heaven (Så som i himmelen)
It is in essence a musical which chronicles the personal lives of a handful of choristers, who sing in a village choir.
This scene from the film is powerful , it’s called Gabrella’s Song, and it’s an empowerment piece where the character Gabriella finally has the confidence to stand up to her abusive husband aided eventually by the villagers who initially ignored her plight
It’s a lovely, lovely film, I’ve just watched it

When I was at school I was taught a VERY FAMOUS Swedish song (which we all rather enjoyed singing). Years later I asked my Swedish mother in law if she knew the song; she'd never heard of it. I felt strangely cheated.
ReplyDeleteThe song really drew me in. Goosebumps on the one hearing.
ReplyDeleteWe LOVED As It Is In Heaven!
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed that film as well and Helen Sjöholm's singing is always a joy to listen to. Luckily I don't need the subtitles :)
ReplyDeleteLiving as I do in a small Swedish town, I do recognise the town vibe and the whole "Don't get involved" attitude that allowed Gabriella's husband to be a bully his whole life. It was uplifting to see how the choir members grew into a community once they got to know and appreciate each other as real, living breathing individuals. We could all learn something from it about judging others.
Yes, when I say it was very Swedish , the whole approach to the choir’s own individual problems was very different to what I expected and I wondered if it had a resonance to swedes watching
