This photo kind of broke my heart just a little
It’s a photo of my nephew
Well it’s actually a photo of my ex husbands nephew but
Him and me have always been in touch since the break up, and so I see him as my own
He sent me the photo yesterday.. a return gift after I sent him a baby photo of him and his uncle,a photo. I found sandwiched away in my bookcase in a tarnished silver frame.
It’s unlikely we shall meet, he lives in Broadstairs down in Kent, but I’m determined to be one of those Uncles who writes and texts and who talks movies in the middle of the night

DeleteAlthough I can guess his age from other photos at time of wedding, he looks quite difficult to put an age to, if that makes sense. He has a mixture of mature with youth in his face. I agree with what Pat said. I like his glasses.

ReplyDeleteIt's like having a penpal with a good link to your childhood, who knows you enough to understand what you are going on about and yet is not too close that you don't want to be 'friends' with.
I would say keep in touch this way, it could prove to be invaluable for both of you. Every boy should have a safe port in the storm for the future ... especially one his parents can trust.

ReplyDeleteI never once took for granted a person who loved one of my kids. I made way for fostering the relationships as long as they were positive. In my experience, a positive male relationship is a little harder to find than female which made all the more important. My Mom married a man that became my kids grandpa. He was loving and wonderful and positive. When she died, he remained and still comes for holidays with his new wife.
We always remember those that have made time for us. It's lovely that you have each other x

Family can be inclusive and doesn't need to be bound by societal rules. I'm glad that you keep in touch with him. Young people need steady, non-judgmental adults in their lives. Lucky kid to have such and Uncle John!

ReplyDeleteYou obviously have a shared connection so yes certainly keep in touch. It might be hard to meet now but social media, emails and text etc allow us to continue to keep in touch and when he is old enough you can meet.

ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful and happy picture! If you and he enjoy each other's company then you should stay in touch. It means so much to a boy his age to have an interested Uncle like you. My brother and my son used to play chess games by mail (before internet & email and yes it took a long time!) We didn't live close but that mail contact provided a wonderful relationship for both of them.

Most teenagers go through a rather gauche stage. Don't you remember when you were young? You're a good man to be a good uncle to him. Obviously, he sees something in you that he needs and wants as a connection.

Teens benefit from having supportive people in their lives. Sounds like you are good friends and have a lot of common interests. As long as other adults (relatives of the x) do not object, putting the teen in an awkward position, all is good. Hopefully they all see the goodness of friendship. One never knows?

I always found that my 'pretend' Uncles were by far the best.
