I'm going for pink and green
Oh and with a shower with a Large glass door
Trendy toilet small hand basin
That's it
Small and colourful

The fantasy of owning a nice bathroom has followed me for years.
In Sheffield I had an avocado bath suite with thick carpet
Trelawnyd' s white bath is functional , but I fantasise about a walk in shower
Getting myself in to the bath at times is a challenge let alone manhandling a 27 kilo bulldog when she needed a pre surgery cleanse !!

I feel an Ikea trip coming on
Green tiles in the Shower
Pink walls
It's humid today, I could do with a cool shower on tap as it were.
The bulldogs are lying nipples to shady concrete and the butterflies were out well before 8 am rather than their usual 11 am .

I'm making a mood board for my bathroom
A walk in shower
I'm getting excited at the prospect

  5. If you have room for it, counter space is nice, and storage, think about storage. It cost as much as my last new car did, but I enjoy my remodeled bathroom everyday. I spent a decade planning, dreaming, getting ready. Removing the rub, and putting in a shower has made my life easier.

  28. A walk-in shower is a must in our home. Neither of us has taken a tub bath in 45 years. Showers are wonderful. Do put in a bench. It makes bathing dogs so easy as they can be up higher and you don’t have to bend over as far.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The first thing I thought looking at the picture is "the dogs will knock over that flimsy tall set of shelves, and the glass vase will break." But then I realized you posted it for the colors...

I second the recommendation of grab bars. They make quite handsome ones now. And a seat is a really good idea too. Of course you'll make it big enough to wash a bulldog in, right?
Two things we did when we redid old baths: With one of those showerheads on a hose, I put a second hook thingy down quite low to hold it, in my case to shower my back or feet while sitting in the tub, or to shower a child; in your case for hanging it while bathing a dog. In my husband's shower on the 3rd floor (no tub) we put a separate faucet down low so that you could fill a bucket if needed for cleaning (since the sink faucet was too low.) We've been very glad for both of these.

Sounds lovely and the colors are soothing. I agree about the need for hand bars as (truth for us all) you're only going to get older and the towel warmer would be the cherry on top. Remember to plan for good storage for the jams, jellies, bandaids, and extra towels.

One of the things I dream about in a shower is to have the knobs at the other end of the shower, not right under the shower head. That way I can turn on the shower without getting an unintended one! (takes about 30 seconds for the hot water to get to the shower head...)

  39. John dear -
Don't choose tiles for shower - keeping grout clean and unstained from water, especially if hard water, is a horrid job (don't believe them when they say "seal it" still never works!). I have a tub with shower combo in one bathroom which is OK. Also have a good size walk-in shower in master bathroom and am longing to rip out tiled walls and floor and replace with a smooth surface which looks like marble - so easy to keep clean. I've spent so much on 'professional' re-grouting and cleaning and it never works! Glass doors are good - do require weekly cleaning to look sparkling - they are easy to do! Have an overhead shower head, but also install a removable handheld shower head - you'll need it for rinsing the doggies and cleaning the shower itself!! I also have spray jets, waste of money and would never do that again!
Sink - definitely a large, deep one - you will not enjoy a tiny shallow one. You would find useful storage space in a cabinet (vanity) with inset sink - plus it hides the pipes.
A niche in the shower wall for shampoo bottles is nice - grab bars essential for safety - and of course non-slip shower floor.
As for color in a bathroom - gleaming white fixtures are always best, keep colors for wall paint, towels, accessories. Hard to sell a property later with out-dated colored bathroom fixtures, and they may soon become boring to you also. Just saying.
Here's to relaxing showers in the days ahead. I'm off to use mine now to wash away the insect repellent after a few hours of gardening in 90F!
    Stay cool!

    1. For me, new mirrors; shower doors if appropriate, or shower curtain rod and curtain; if you don't want to replace sink, new fixtures (nobs, faucet) make a huge difference. We also replaced the shower head structure with a very cool, large one. Major improvement. Towel racks and hooks. Nice simple storage if there's room. Those things don't cost much and do make a difference. I'd like to go back in and replace all the tile (walls and floor are covered -- both nice but they don't really go together). I'll come to Trelawnyd and we can go shopping together!

I second all of Mary's suggestions, especially with respect to the wall finish in the shower, and colours, and another's suggestion about heated flooring. If I understand correctly, you're redoing the entire bathroom. If so, consider a "comfort height" toilet. It's just a bit taller than a regular toilet, and so much easier to get up from. One last thing, another commenter suggested that it might be difficult to open the door in the bathroom pictured. I think the shower pictured has one stationary panel of glass, and another panel that slides to one side so that you can get in and out.

You will have so much fun planning this bathroom reno!

  56. Love your colour choice John might be wise to buy those little test cans colour wise and try them out because those colour cards can be disapointing and not true to form I thought I had found the right colour but the shade was much to dark. I have lived with 3 bedrooms halway and up the stairs with a colour I don't like, totally my fault I didn't tell my husband because he went along with my choice as it is.
I'm excited for you a fresh new look, showers are much easier and less bending over cleaning.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Love your colour choices. Are you going to get a Japanese toilet? They do everything for you except the bodily function! Having had 2 shoulder and an ankle surgery in the past the bench and grab bar and the additional lower shower head are godsends. We have a very small second bathroom. The cupboard under the sink is exactly the same width and depth as the sink. Great for hiding toilet paper and cleaning products!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Great suggestions here. I love your colours - but I'd be sticking to white fittings. I'd be prioritising a heater, heated towel rail, electric plug, walk-in shower with a flexible rose showered and also a grab rail.
We had to do our bathroom a while ago and I went for a 1m by 1.5m cubicle - so if someone needs help, or a seat, it's easy. Oh, and a heated mirror... but then I'm a girl! And NOT an extractor fan that automatically comes on with the light... it's way too breezy in the middle of a winter's night!
What fun planning a bathroom reno is ... especially when you don't have to live through it yourself! But Winnie will be Chief Supervisor so the job will go smoothly, won't it.

  59. I think tile [NOT green!] is classic and classier than the solid state panels. Which become very hard to clean as they age. There are large often rectangular tiles, often marble, that are set w not visible grout and they look like a high end 5 star hotel or spa. Easy to clean, look good forever. Be sure to get the shower head that has a secondary handheld shower head [Kohler?] for rinsing the glass and tiles and for dog cleaning. And how about a toilet with a lighted seat so you don t need to turn the lights on at night.

Back to the green tile or green boards, they will reduce the resale value if heaven forbid you must someday sell.

Oh and add a ceiling permanently set in heater , electric, for those cold mornings before work at 6 AM.

  64. My perfect bathroom has a sink big enough to be able to wash your face without simultaneously splashing your feet. With TWO taps not a modern mixer tap and mounted on a re-purposed antique cupboard.

It has a low level bathtub with shower above. Just deep enough to be able to sit in water when a cool dunk is needed and to be able to wash small dogs, but shallow enough to be able to step out of easily.

There are old planks made into shelves for all the decorative bits and plants, and then a slimline mirror fronted bathroom cabinet for all the things you want out of sight with no obvious handle, just a push to open corner thing.

There would be a wood effect floor and subway tiles around all the wet areas with a beautiful fancy wallpaper above.

    One day!!

  65. Be are in the market for a new bathroom. Planning it is so pleasurable, even if the budget will eventually rein me in. I vote for underfloor heating. Pink and green is a classic combo reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts era. Sadly, even in well preserved houses the bathrooms have been modernised. I'm always thrilled when i find an unrestored pink and green gem.
