There is a race night at the village Hall and a rememberence service in the village tomorrow
I have and will miss both as I'm working all weekend.
Apparantly the race night was a sell out!
It's 9.15 pm and I've just found a carrier bag tied to the front door knob when I brought the dogs back from Trendy Carol's
It's pissed down all day
In the bag was a small casserole dish covered with foil and in that is a watery half waterlogged portion of shepherds pie
I'm eating it cold next to a hastily lit log burner as the dogs watch grumpily
On a postit note selotaped to the top of the pie was written just two words and a scribbled kiss
Mrs Trellis
It said

How lovely that you stay in that place surrounded by friends as you are to them.xxx
ReplyDeleteNice village to live in. My Mum made a wonderful shepherd's pie from leftover roast. Now I must try make one.
ReplyDeleteparsnip
You should have popty pingd it and called it stew.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't be arsed.....
DeleteI'm knackered
Bless Mrs Trellis. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI lovely gesture
DeleteBut she's not a brill cook...xx
Outrageous remark!
DeleteIt's a long term joke x
DeleteAren't you lucky to have such nice neighbors!
ReplyDeleteThey care about you - a lot.
ReplyDeleteAnd I them dearheart
DeleteWhat a lovely surprise and much needed ready made meal after you worked those long hours. Stellar thoughtful gesture from Mrs. Trellis! Do you have a microwave so the Shepherd's Pie could have been reheated?
ReplyDeleteAlas, we can no longer have beef since we've both been bitten by a Lone Star Tick (east coast USA) and some enzyme from the tick makes digesting beef impossible. Sigh!
Sleep well!
You live amongst a great community.
ReplyDeletethe Village does love you.
ReplyDeleteRest and stay warm and dry.
ReplyDeleteA lovely, neighbourly gesture!
ReplyDeleteMrs Trellis's what?

DeleteAny meal that I don't have to cook is a blessing, and I like to cook. So glad she thought of you.

Whenever I see Shepherd's Pie I think of Keith Richards. That's the food he wants backstage when he's finished playing a concert and the rule is inviolable- DON'T BUST THE CRUST! That's Keith's honor.
ReplyDeleteThat was kind of her and I am envious as it has been many years since I have had Shepherd's Pie. I do rather flinch at the idea of eating it cold though...
ReplyDeleteWhat a kind gesture and note with a scribbled kiss from Mrs. Trellis.
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice when Mrs Trellis ties a carrier bag to your knob.
ReplyDeleteWell said YP!
DeleteWhen my husband died, we hadn't been living in the house long, just a few months.
ReplyDeleteEvery day I would find something in a bag, tied to the front door knob.
Those sweet country cooks fed me and made me cry every day.❤️
Ah bechod, as you say up north, lovely that people close are holding you... There is a lot to be said for that..... Back to MIL hwyl Suz x
ReplyDeleteI think I would have got it hot, somehow!
ReplyDeleteIt seems, from your post, that your "adopted" village thrives on kindness. You help, encourage, feed and sustain each other. It is very heartwarming. My practical side just suggested that you have 2 little wooden boxes with steep roofs. One one the garden wall and one a little shelf by the door - for those little presents!!!
ReplyDeleteHow kind of Mrs Trellis. Do you not have a microwave? Countertop ones are inexpensive and food is so much better eaten hot.
ReplyDeleteYou should buy a microwave; two minutes and it would have been even better.
ReplyDeletep.s. You've given me the urge; I shall make a Shepherd's (mine will be cottage) Pie for tonight.
DeleteThat was kind.
ReplyDeleteThat is so thoughtful of Mrs Trellis made with love.
ReplyDeleteIt was pissing down all day in Belfast as well. I went precisely nowhere, just sat in my cosy living room and read an old Doris Lessing novel.
ReplyDeleteComfort food. The day we moved into our first home after renting , our wonderful landlady delivered a hot Shepherds Pie.
ReplyDeleteIn turn I made one for a friend coming out of hospital. The friend I realised wasn't a big red meat eater but her teenage boys enjoyed it !
You are loved. And what a wonderful community you live in.
ReplyDeleteI would love to live in your Village John with my gang- I could leave you little homemade treats tied to your knob, not cakes or scones perhaps, as my mum said once"don't put that outside-the birds will break their beaks"- my dog buried a slice of my delicious cake too for later x
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love that word knob
DeleteWhat a lovely gesture from 'Trellis', you are well thought of John, but you give what you get in life l believe.
ReplyDeleteMight l suggest a slow cooker/ crock-pot?, sling a load of ingedients in it, quick stir round, turn on to low setting, hot / edible food for when you get home and meals for more than just one day to eat the next day as well or freeze as you fancy.
Saves time, money, effort.
P.S. l am not a manufacturer or a sales rep for, the crock-pot industry!
Love Tess xx
Oh dear why did you spoil it by saying in the comments that Mrs Trellis isn't a good cook. What a peevish thing to say after such a kind gesture.
ReplyDeletePerhaps John is making a bit of fun Jan,about being left a meal, so as not to make other villagers envious- Mrs Trellis can't cook for the whole village can she x
Deleteflis of course she can't cook for the whole village and I didn't suggest that.
DeleteWhat I did say was that it was unkind to make the remark that she is a rubbish cook. Nowhere was there a word of gratitude.
John and Mrs Trellis have a humorous and loving friendship, something you would garner had you read between the lines of many of John's blog posts.
DeleteJan , Mrs Trellis knows she not a good cook. It's a joke we have and have had between us for years.
DeleteBut the gift was gratefully received as always
Mave, you are right....perfectly right xx
DeleteI'm always right....AND perfect 😜
DeleteShepherd’s Pie is one of my favorites. I think we’ll have it for supper this evening.
ReplyDeleteIs Weaver of Grass okay?
Yes weavinfool - thank you for asking - I have had friends staying.
ReplyDeleteI adore Shepherd's Pie - sorry it had got a bit watery but as usual - so kind of Mrs Trellis.
There are a few so-called English Pubs in town that serve Shepherds pie; I do not know if it is proper pie or not.
ReplyDeleteShepherd's Pie is most definitely not a pie in the traditional sense. It should be off cuts of lamb in gravy with a mashed potato topping which is then baked.
DeleteTo know you'll have to give it a go 😉
