Fleabag

For someone who boasts that he is a bit of a culture vulture, I am surprised to admit that the whole Fleabag phenomenon has literally passed me by.
My sister tried to get tickets for the National Theatre's live showing but it was sold out , so this evening we went to Theatr Clwyd to see a re run of the filmed version.

I enjoyed it.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a wonderful storyteller and describes her strange modern day life with it's distant relatives, a guinea pig cafe, feminist views, sex, porn and friends with energy and an edge of cruelty which is refreshing and at times achingly sad.
Hers is an essay on grief and how sex fills a void of pain and the need to be properly loved

I can see just why her subsequent tv show and her poaching by the American tv lords has signalled just how big the Fleabag franchise has become.

I wonder where the move will take her.

  1. Fleabag on TV was great. She - to my mind - is the female equivalent of Mark Gatiss, another genius.

    1. The stage performance was raw and at times unbearable to watch....I need to buy the box set of tv programmes to see the difference

    3. She did a lot of looking straight into the camera in a conspiratorial way on TV. You couldn't do that in the theatre.

  2. I really dug Fleabag and was surprised that there was a second series. Waller-Bridge, talented one that she is, pulled it off & series 2 was also top-notch.

  4. Fleabag? Any idea when the new Walking Dead starts? I heard a rumour that Rick might return (think this is called threadjacking but internet slang baffles me too!)

  5. You're a more cultured vulture than I, for I have no idea what this fleabag thing is. I'm just relieved this post isn't about a pest infestation in the cottage.

  6. I loved both series. I almost hope she doesn't go for a third, as they are trying to persuade her to, as it is perfectly complete just as it is 😃

  7. I don’t know why I don’t get fleabag. Keep trying and can’t get past the second episode. No longer hip just an old.

  8. Available on Amazon Prime, something to maybe watch this winter...tho grief and porn and young woman in big city angst aren't my thing. Maybe after I watch Shetland. PS Do you get the remake of Magnum PI, oooh, eye candy guy[s].

  12. I've never heard of Fleabag, but having Googled it I don't feel that I have missed out on anything. It doesn't sound at all like culture. However, I understand that I am in a minority here.

Watched it on Prime. Unsure if we liked it for first couple episodes, then “got it””, binged remaining episodes (laughing out loud by season 2).
She’s brilliant, can’t wait for her next project!

  19. I've been watching Fleabag and I love it. Phoebe is a wonderful actor. She's sad and messed up and still keeps going. I admire that. Plus she's funny as hell.

  20. I bingewatched both series on the plane over to Canada and cried and laughed so much. The absolute bathos of her finally telling us why she is behaving the way she does. SO GOOD
