Pants and a Top

" You'll need a pair of black trousers and a plain coloured shirt"
So instructed 1940s RAF moustached Jamie as we finished choir practice tonight
We are giving a mini concert on Thursday and are performing ten songs and a fanale piece given the hopefully rapturous applause from the Melyd Golf Club Regulars!
Jamie wants us to look the part!
" I don't know if I have a plain shirt!" I whispered to Peter, my fellow bass and  renowned gentleman farmer
He rolled his eyes
" A man should be prepared for every eventuality !" He said evenly in his cut glass accent
" I'll pop down to TK MAXX tomorrow!" I told him, " I'll get something very cheap!"
" Oh how lovely !" he said

This is one of the songs we will be singing

Good luck with the shirt. And what no tie?

  3. Try the charity shops, John...you'll be amazed what you can find and amazed by the variety of people who shop in them! Always a good hunting ground for 'dog towels' too!

  4. A dress code for the Melyd Golf Club regulars? Good grief. Surely they're more interested in the music than what you're wearing?

  5. A plain shirt. Hmmm...Colored or white, with or without collar, long or short sleeves? I'm clearly overthinking this. And I suppose this will also rule out plaid or walking dead logos. Good luck John. X

  9. Good luck with the concert. I bet it is fun singing in a choir. I used to do that when I was a kid and I liked it.

  10. Being an old biddy I do not care for T shirts with logos (my son also lives in them) so shall be delighted that you intend to get a 'proper' shirt - photo appreciated please!

  11. To Croc or not to Croc? It's a question that...

  12. You could try using safety pins and tucking the corners of a napkin into a t shirt for a makeshift collar in a emergency x

  13. OMG. I have not heard this song since I heard Pete Seeger sing it in the sixties. Have a grand time singing it.

  16. You could get an even cheaper plain shirt from Oxfam - or indeed any other charity shop.

  20. Trousers for your British readers who are of course in the minority here we know, but we are here, a few of us.

    1. Or even "a pair of trousers", Rachel, if you aren't British or American. Don't say I wasn't taught English proper(ly) even though my spoken/conversational English was pitiful when I first arrived on these shores. Which didn't stop me from getting the first job I applied for. My boss (a formidable lady) clearly blessed with a sense of humour and daring.

Anyway, what of that rhyme "liar, liar, pants on fire"? I suppose it rolls better off the tongue than trousers (or pairs of ...).

    2. Liar liar pants on fire never referred to trousers either. Pants, are underpants in Britain full stop.

    3. Of course. See what you mean. Thanks for that.

    4. Surely it's a regional/ age thing? Round here 'pants' refer to clothing that covers the legs, not underwear.

  21. Have fun John.

My mother had a beautiful singing voice and was in a choir wherever we lived. For one choir, assuming for concerts they wore all black, she bought a lovely black shirt with a very high neck line rather like a choir boy. Mum would have been in her fifties.

Mum was told in no uncertain terms by a fellow choir member, an older lady that , no, we wear white blouses ...far more flattering for the aging skin !

Must remind mum of that little story later X

I agree with Tess. Second hand stores hold treasures. I love to thrift. You can get quality, gently worn ... even new items at very low prices. Loved the music clip. Would enjoy hearing your choir live.

  24. Oh I love The Spooky Men's Chorale. I am one of their groupies and have seen them about ten times now when they come over on one of their bi-yearly tours. I am sure your Choir will sing this song beautifully. I loved the comment "How lovely" re: the cheap shirt from TKMaxx! Sue xx

  25. The older I get, the fewer plain shirts I have. Plain and without stains?

  26. John, that Peter of yours has got my measure. "Be prepared for every eventuality". It's how I live my life. Even the dress I wish to be buried in - and wore the last time shortly after the Angel's Christening - has been dry cleaned in anticipation of the day which will come. (Poor me).

TKMaxx? Don't sell yourself cheap, John. Remember your motto above - peanuts, cocktail and all.

  28. I ran into that dilemma this spring, I had to buy a proper shirt for a family friend's funeral. My old ones looked.. well old.. plus some how they all shrunk around the tummy area (blushing).

  29. Most of my wardrobe comes from thrift stores. Some from TJ Maxx competitor Ross. My problem is that TJ Max has little on their fat racks that I like and fits me. Boo Hoo. What's wrong with your purple shirt.

You and the choir will look wonderfully coordinated and your joyful singing will be superb. Wish we could hear your group sing this lovely song. I, too, remember Pete Seeger's version.

    Hugs!
