Fishfingers under the honeysuckle

The dog walker left the back door unlocked today which I was unhappy about
I didn't have the energy to be angry, partly because I was tired and partly because Winnie had somehow got a miniature cocktail sausage stuck in her gums and was bouncing around the cottage like a loon in an effort to finally eat it
In the end I had to sit on her and flick it out with a crooked finger

I rang the walker and asked him nicely if he could be a little more careful in future.

I had a fishfinger sandwich for tea at 9 pm
And ate  it still in my uniform on the front garden seat
Under the still fragrant but dying blooms of the honeysuckle

  1. My dogs would have swallowed that little sausage whole.

  2. Ah, you have brought back many precious memories of flicking my cocktail sausage out with a crooked finger under the withering honeysuckle. Happy days, happy days.

  3. Oh poor Winnie... but I have to say I laughed after reading it...I can just imagine her consternation. The dog walker should have been a lot more careful with securing your lovely cottage... shame on him.

  6. I'm sure everything will be ok John - the dog walker probably feels dreadful about being so irresponsible and will check and re check in future. It's all teething problems at the .moment for everyone and it will all be fine x

  10. I love fish fingers (fish sticks over here) which places me firmly into the category of 'white trash' Who cares? Not me. Dear Winnie, with a sausage stuck in her maw....Oh the humanity. X

    1. Fish sticks are crab sticks here,,, very different
Fish fingers are cod covered in breadcrumbs

  11. The vision of you pinning down Winnie and flicking her gum flaps has me all of a flutter. Hoping no dogs were harmed in this procedure. When you get your day of, for gawds sake..sleep.

  16. Two shifts down, one to go, and then a day of rest!

Twelve hour shifts - they are the standard here also - voted in mostly by folks 40 and under. They would be in their 60s now; I wonder how they found those long shifts when they got to be 45 and older.

Ta for the chuckle at Winnie's reaction to the sausage she could taste but not quite swallow. Glad you're good at flicking stuck food out of her mouth. Isn't it interesting what nursing skills come to fore at home?

Hope you sleep well. When doing 12 hour shifts, it's all work-eat-sleep-eat-work & repeat. Do your errands on your days off.

    Hugs!

  22. Ye-gods, 12 hour shifts. And I thought the days of Dickens were long in the past.

  23. Fish fingers at bedtime, eeew. In a few weeks when you're more settled into the job, maybe on one of your four days off you can coo [and freeze?] some healthy meals suitable for late dinners. Healthy eating *was* on your to do list, wasn't it? And the overnight oatmeal with a bit of yogurt and berries makes such a nice morning meal, instead of or in addition to that "bucket" of coffee you often mention.

    Good luck!

    1. When you've just worked a 12 hour shift in a Hospice there is NOTHING better than a fish finger sandwich, I can tell you! Protein, carbohydrate and fat - perfect! If one is especially virtuous one can have brown bread - fibre! Hope you are settling in, John. All that new info and no doubt on your feet ALL day equals exhaustion.

    2. Eat what you like, John. It's your mouth and your belly.

    3. Yes except one of the main points of John's hopes for ''going forward'' was a return to healthy eating! I can't imagine how fish fingers could be healthy, esp late at night. Mean Queen: It may be his mouth and belly but it is also his health and energy to succeed in a new routine!

    4. Lizzy-I'm sure John does know what foods are healthy, but at the moment with all the adjustments in his life I think the odd bit of comfort food will do him well x

    5. Flis: I *said* in the future, once he settles into the job. It was his idea, to eat healthy.
And I can't imagine fish fingers as comfort food. [I don't think Americans eat fish fingers? I never have, sounds so nasty.].
