A Quiet Place

Noah Jupp, Millicent Simmonds and John Kraninski

As the tension builds in the monster horror movie A Quiet Place the audience squirms uncomfortably when Emily Blunt's character Evelyn goes into labour just as the killer aliens enter her house. The message unsaid but collectively realised by the audience is that babies always cry and the blind aliens only attack when they hear noise.
To survive, you have to be quiet!
It's a simple but incredibly effective premise.
And so in a practically empty post apocalyptic world we follow a survivalist family's quest on their farm festooned in light bulbs but without an animal that may give their presence away.
The family has a head start above other survivors. Father Leo  ( John Kraninski) is a tough protector sort whilst chubby daughter Megan ( Millicent Simmonds) is deaf allowing her and the family to communicate effectively by sign language, but a childhood game with a noisy rocket ship brings tragedy when the youngest son is killed brutally on a forage out for medication .
Despite the family strengths , the odds are clearly stacked against total silence and safety here. A crying baby, a deaf child who cannot hear the noise she is making, a nail on a staircase just waiting to be stepped upon at the wrong moment have all been set up to give the game away, and at times the story gets unbearably tense as the monsters move in....
A Quiet Place is what it is , a great old fashioned monster movie......
With a twist
8/10

" shut the fuck up" Emily Blunt

  1. My son told me about this and I'd like to see it. It led to a conversation about having to remain silent and I talked about the Jews in hiding during the Holocaust and very tragically babies were unwittingly smothered buy mothers coddling too tight to quieten them. These films we wast have lead to real conversations. Joe had such a vivid dream that I told him one day he might write a screen play himself !

Did you ever watch Signs ? I loved it.

  2. We thought it brilliant ... and gave it an 8/10 too.

What made us break into stifled fits of giggles though was the audience in the packed cinema trying to cough, munch on popcorn and slurp their drinks during the all too few spells of noise or music on screen πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

And yes, we jumped out of our skins on quite a few occasions.

  3. Ooooh! I don't do scary! Even the scary cemetery scene in Sound of Music had my heart pounding! I do Happy, .... for Happy, I suggest you forcefully suspend your literary critic and go to Peter Rabbit... it's only 90 minutes and you'll get plenty of giggles from the dialogue designed to keep the adult caregivers entertained.

    1. Yep! Light on length, light on sadness, light on viciousness, gratuitous violence .... need I continue? Weaver was saying recently she wasn't sure she needed to read the newspaper - and certainly most of the news is just dead depressing. We need lightweight John. Thats why sailing and eating sarnies on the beach is Good For You!

  7. I have just listened to an Algernon Blackwood story about a malevolent presence which can only find you if you think about it or just be scared of it. That's even trickier than staying quiet.

  11. Saw it last night and completely agree. It was a bit of a slow (quiet) start, but once the action ramped up, it was all out.

  18. -- I want to see it but I don't want to see it. --
I don't like anything that shows harm to children, I am unable to watch a horror movie like this then be home alone LOL and I decided a while back that if I see a movie, it will be pleasant. pretty , funny or actually true story . But I have quit seeing horror movies. There might be times in a person's life where they think they are actually in a horror movie ... horror doesn't appeal to me anymore ..
