First rule of retirement - learn how to say "No". Congratulations John, you've worked long and hard; time to sit in your lovely garden and watch the clouds, listen to the bees and birds and simply enjoy life. x
On that first morning, he made himself a big mug of tea and two slices of toast which he lathered with strawberry jam. Then he went to sit in front of the television, enjoying the comfort of his old armchair. There he stayed till lunchtime, not even getting up when the postman shoved some leaflets through the letterbox. There were leaflets for a stair lift, hearing aids, retirement villages and incontinence. He farted like a trooper and promptly drifted back to sleep as the women on "Loose Women" continue to chatter aimlessly. At last, he was retired.
Yes, the leaflets for hearing aids and walk-in bathtubs start arriving right around age 50. Now, at 70, I get the ones for cremation services and "final expenses" insurance.
When and Where will your first trip be ? Ours was Paris followed by Argentina followed by moving to Argentina ... be careful when making choices, now that you are free as birds :)
Fantastic, enjoy freedom!. I,m 2.5 years behind you, retiring from NHS. Thank whatever we can at 55. Not sure I could last until 68 as anyone who joined the pension scheme after April 1995 has to. Enjoy freeeeeeeeedom x
Enjoy a well-earned rest. Plan lots of things. Then discover that somehow when you're not working things don't seem to happen as quickly. Wonder how you ever managed to find time to go to work, and simultaneously wonder why you haven't achieved the redecorating/garden remodel/exercise regime/efficiency drive that you'd planned. And then remember that you've worked hard all your life, and this is YOUR time. Enjoy.
Just came over from Pat's blog (Weaver of Grass). Nice to find you. We were in Wales last year, fell in love with the place. Felt right at home, so much like West Virginia.
Time for a bucket list !I made a "Things I want to do before I kick the bucket list" when I first retired and was surprised when I looked at it a few years later how many I actually did do!
John, I too just retired. Two weeks ago! I can tell you one thing for sure: everybody wants you to get back to work! Questions abound like: But, what will you do next? Or: You are too young to be retired, when will you take a part time job? To those people I want to say: Yeah, I'd like a few minutes of rest before I make that decision.
John, I took early retirement from teaching at 50 and I never regretted it for a single minute. Within weeks I wondered how ever I found time to go to work.
Congratulations on your retirement John! I retired at 56 with 37 years working for the Government. Most of those years were in the Legal field. I did not know how burned out I was until I retired. The days and weeks will fly by. I never seem to get everything done that I plan to do. Like Weaver, I don't know how I found time to go to work. You will enjoy every minute, but do try and stay out of trouble! :) EVERYDAY IS A HOLIDAY!
Normally, I would behave extremely ladylike an'all but in this case, I think you're one very lucky bastard to be retiring now. Jealous, Moi? You better believe it!!!
Congratulations........soooo jealous! We've got 5 years to go before our small holding/gardening dreams fruit! Relax for a bit and take your time making your plans. Enjoy everyday with the fur babies and the Prof....... you deserve it!
Congrats John!!!! So happy for you!!! We're planning on working 8 more years. I am 52 so I'll be 60. 2nd Man is 55 so he'll be 63 and getting social security. Or course with our current administration, not sure how that will all be impacted, ha. And we may speed things up. Fingers crossed!
Everything you thought of doing can been done now. It will so exciting and scary but most of all fun. The first few years after my retirement from freelancing and marriage (goodby x) were filled with such joy even though I was alone just with my Two Square Dogs. I was able to do what I wanted when I wanted and some of my best years till I got ill. I know you will have some great adventures and please write us about them.
Welcome to retirement, some say it's the best job in the world.
