Never mind the tissues, pass the barf bucket. It was a load of cloyingly sentimentalized old tosh. They ought to have had Laura Ingalls, or Lassie, drop by for good measure.
The father is disabled and in a wheelchair. The juxtaposition between the two is interesting. Prejudice has existed against anything not seen as the norm, but hopefully with more education and exposure it is being broken down more and more. There will always be those who cannot and will not budge on their thinking around subjects and it is their loss. Life is too short and everyone is entitled to be happy and loved.
annie b, that's a good theory about the wheelchair angle -- the father knows from his own experience about facing barriers. I also thought that perhaps it was hinting that the father was a disabled veteran and therefore more likely to want his son to fulfill a traditional masculine role. Although that does presume that vets are more likely to be homophobic and I don't know whether that's warranted. Let's hope not, in this day and age.
I think the wheelchair came into it because the father had a chance to think about how he and his son were the same - facing discrimination - one for his disability and one for his sexuality. Once he considered that, he came to understand, as the title suggests. That's my take on it, anyway. I loved it, because I want things to be like this, but I don't know how realistic it is.
Then why do you keep reading it, Petra? Don't you have better things to do than criticize other people who are having an enjoyable time? If not, maybe you need to re-think how you are spending your life.
Jenny, very interesting take. I just took it as possible this family had a person in a wheelchair as many families do. Then it does go on to the way you said. Right now I am in a walker but soon I will have to use a wheelchair. A family is what you have. Two legs or two legs and four wheels. Love them all.
You asshole.....it is a fantasy of yours that I was a gay like you: I am just sickened by the lies bloggers spin. You are a sad individual who thinks he is surrounded and loved by friends who give a fuck
Kodak has had some fabulous commercials over the years. This is one of them. Back in 2005 they ran a commercial about a tour in a photo museum with some children. It was a short. It made me cry every time I saw it. They now have an extended one, (8 min) that is great if you never saw the first one. Kodak ran the first one 2005 then shorten it which you can find on you tube it is to me one of the greatest commercials ever made.
Petra's vitriol says so much about her as a person. Very sad and as others have said why does she keep posting on a blog that she supposedly does not like. A psychiatrists dream
Yeah, well, I am done with the childish crap .. One of the reasons that this blog is so pleasant, it is adults having a chat .. big mouthed brats not welcome.
I didn't understand this video story. It leaves a bunch of questions behind. No wonder the Kodak company has been in a financial nosedive for years now. There seems to be a growing trend in advertising to leave you guessing about the product or service involved. I wish they would be more straightforward.
Where has the lad's boyfriend gone? Why is the dad in a wheelchair? Why has the lad got such a grumpy face? Why hadn't the dad let his son know of his love and acceptance before the staid birthday party? etc. etc.
This reminds me of something that happened this week. My fav aunt passed away and she had dementia towards the end. My uncle took such loving care of her. During the service the priest said sometime Margie thought my uncle was her husband and sometime she thought he was the guy bringing the groceries. But did it really matter? She knew it was someone that loved her. Love is all we need....
Interesting question you pose, John. Is Petra a he or a she? Never go by appearances. In the olden days boys were given girls' names - at least in the middle. Think Rainer Maria Rilke.
Speculation rife we could start taking bets. What are the odds? I don't know.
If I were forced I'd say we are talking about a gay [man] currently locked into a trunk trying to get out.
using a wheelchair doesn't always mean you can't walk or stand at all ... Maybe they have a lift or stairlift fitted. A lovely moment, thank you for sharing it.
Petra is deluded - if you were going to create a fake life for your blog I think you'd choose something a little more glamorous with fewer instances of defecation (both animal and human). Nobody would make up stories about sex-crazed bulldogs and incontinent terriers! It's the reality that makes it such a good read.
It seems to me that petra needs to be pitied. It has to be exhausting being so nasty. That said..we have had enough of the hate and vinegar she/he/it spews.
There's another aspect to Petra's problem .... we can ignore, or delete the comments, but I feel a huge sadness/fear for any person who has to deal with her/him on a daily basis in real life - how ghastly would that be?
Without wishing to pay PETRA undue attention, here is a thought, John - maybe it isn't a name but (considering the capital letters) an acronym. An acronym for what you may ask. I don't know. Google gives a hilarious choice of nine different options which - bar one (possibly) - I think we can safely rule out.
Yes, tissues, please. Wheelchair? Just another normal life maybe. Or to make viewers realize that there are plenty of "differents" in the world. Anyway, it shouldn't matter.
Thanks for sharing really enjoyed it. The take on the wheelchair can take different angles, father living his discrimination, disabled vet as has been mentioned. My first impression was the masculinity aspect of the father's inability maybe "If a was more of a man, if I was whole". The short video makes and allows us all to take from it and after watching it completely come away with renewed faith in love and family.
Usually I'm a total sucker for this sort of thing but this one I didn't like so much to be honest. It took the family too long to remember that their love for their son as he is overrides all. I guess that in the real world this is far more the way it is though than the way it was when one of my children came out to me. I was like, "Yeah. I know. Wanna go see the Indigo Girls?" I am not telling this to sound cool and hip. I have no idea why but it's just never been a big deal to me. My kids' sex lives isn't any of my business and they are who they are and I adore them. Now- when that same child transgendered, it was a bit more difficult in that I had, at that time, no experience with the matter but it wasn't such a big deal. The pronouns were the hardest part.
Oh I must have a different take on that video than others. Thought it was good but I was hardly going to cry over it. I saw dad as the all American "jock" who probably once played the sports that his son was now playing and who represented the "macho" (sorry couldn't think of another word at this time of night) father-son relationship. So then the proud dad of the macho kid has to come to terms with life not being quite so idyllic. I'm usually wrong about this stuff though so just ignore me. Oh and as for Petra, I'd say she's just on the rag! Anna
Tissues indeed.
ReplyDeleteSniff.

so sweet.
ReplyDeleteNever mind the tissues, pass the barf bucket. It was a load of cloyingly sentimentalized old tosh. They ought to have had Laura Ingalls, or Lassie, drop by for good measure.
ReplyDeleteBut if that one advert strikes an emotional chord in someone to think about their actions towards a loved one then it has done its job.
DeleteSentimental is good! Especially on a dull thursday evening!
DeleteAnd the father was cute too!
DeleteRebel has the right idea. Barf away and when you are at it spend some time puking over it's readers
DeletePetra, please stop .. you only embarrass yourself ..
DeleteI loved this for the message .. the expectations of something not pleasant going to happen, but happily, the best thing happens.
I missed that one!
DeleteLove is so much easier than hate.
ReplyDeleteAnd, My God !! it makes you feel so
much better.
Just imagine the world if each of us
could receive a loving hug every day.

ReplyDeleteJenny - nothing in the video is real, that is why it was picked, nothing is real on this blog.

I am sincerely curious why Petra continues to read when she is not enjoying it.

DeleteSuch a touching film.
ReplyDeleteIt only took two and a half minutes to completely change my mood. Wow! Hard to think of it as an advert.
ReplyDeletePetra, you shall be deleted. Just go. You are as unwanted as your bad humour
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked and appalled! When WILL Americans learn how to use a knife and fork correctly?.....
ReplyDeleteNow, now, Wanda, Americans currently do have enough on their plate without being reminded of their fork ...

DeleteALT i am intrigued by your title....did you know its a liver enzyme?
Delete"a liver enzyme", John, you show off :)
DeleteJohn, for all you know ALT57 donated his/her liver to George Best. And, in the aftermath, so I hope, has not become "a psychiatrist's dream".

Oh God she is tiresome .. no one else wants to hear her either .. ban her nastiness.

Wheelchair? Who knows
Perhaps he was an active nymphomaniac then something snapped ?
( stolen line from the late victori wood)
I watched this video twice. I cried both times :)
ReplyDeleteIf only, IF ONLY, there was more of that kind of reality in our world.
I think she is a he

ReplyDeleteI love it when Love Wins . . .
The grandmothers face did it for me
ReplyDeleteI was hoping she'd emulate the mad axewoman in Went The Day Well, and set about the lot of them.
DeleteThe post mistress! She was a real hero
Deletegeezus John; im sobbing here in Montana...how poignant, and how we have to work harder here for human rights in the USA...
ReplyDeleteJust been watching 'Mind over Marathon'. You'll need loads of tissues for that. Heartwrenching stories.

ReplyDeleteIts rather sweet is it not?
DeleteWell, now my eyes are wet!
ReplyDeleteJust lovely.
I think Jenny is right, both face discrimination and the father got that.
ReplyDeleteWhat I want to know is how the father got up to the second floor bedroom in his wheelchair?
He stood at the end too!
