Mrs Miniver

I'm better slightly out of focus!

I'm more like Mrs Miniver than not today.
The weather is warm and the Sparrow Flock is causing a riot on the stone wall of the cottage.
The windows need to be flung wide open as the sky beyond the green hills is a Danial Craig blue.
A Spitfire drones overhead.
I'm not kidding a Spitfire IS flying overhead, it is a privately owned one from across the valley and you can always tell it's earthy tones as it grumbles past.
I'm suddenly transported to Kent in 1942. ( well the Hollywood version of Kent that is) but unfortunately Bwthyn-y-Llan is not Starlings, I haven't got a tittering housemaid called Gladys and I don't have to worry about telling my husband I 've just bought a new hat!

The Prof is out having a 1:1 with his 24 year old fitness coach.
It's something Walter Pidgeon would not have done. He just smoked a pipe and rattled his big pants!

I have been moving aquilegia from the back garden into the front. I am clearing the back garden for a make over and I want to save as many as the cottage plants as I can. Winnie is sunbathing on the warm soil.
She looks as though someone has hit her with a stick.
Greer Garson would never have owned a bulldog, she was a black labrador kinda gal!
I open the windows wide and hear the Spitfire again. I wonder for a moment if there is a German paratrooper in the larder?

I feel like Mrs Miniver today, popular but useless!

  3. 'I'm better slightly out of focus'....we call it 'softened' especially when one reaches a certain age!! lol
Ron's father flew a Spitfire in North Africa......wondering where this fellow got his?

Better than "useless and not popular".

I note your writing style changing. No doubt, don't call me conceited, due to my benign influence. In the words of one of my long lost biggest fans "Who the fuck does write like you do?" to which, naturally, I answered "I do".

Spring has arrived. The waiting is in the egg. Unless you are a rabbit.

    U

  5. What a lovely day in your neck of the woods, across the pond... Today will be a almost 89 degree F day for me. A little warm for my taste but then i'm a cold weather gal... give me Fall and Winter... But the mornings have been beautiful... the sun is shining , a breeze blowing and its still a coolish 60F ... The black cat Jinx is in a sunpuddle.... the coffee is percolating and hubby has just headed out the door to bust up some concrete with his new tool he bought yesterday.. Me... i move slower in the mornings.... when i worked mornings were always rush.. had to be at work by 5 am.. Now... i linger.... over coffee and a browse of the internet... Enjoy your day John.. it sounds lovely......Hugs! deb

  7. It's raining and grey in my part of Canada. My men are all busy polishing shoes and boots, delinting suits and uniforms in preparation for tomorrow's Vimy anniversary celebrations. The dog is trying to get to the clothes to leave fresh hair in them.

I'm hoping they get sun tomorrow. I keep getting tol marching in wet wool is a female dog of an experience

  8. You are the most UNuseless person I've ever almost known. I love the sound of the old aircraft. Before they built out behind us we had a chap who practiced his barrel rolls and death spirals over the field. I always stopped and watched...mostly because I liked it and also because if he needed 911 I wanted to be sure he got it lol.

  9. Ha ha ha ha...fun post! And your right, I see Winnie was a huge helper. I'm in a Garbo mood myself. I have plans later but would rather be reclusive today. Maybe I'll go incognito?

  10. Clear and cool here this morning, I had a nice wander in the farmers market on the square in Old Town Alexandria this morning. Sounds nice there. A spitfire, about 200 pounds an hour in fuel along.

  11. Love that film. As one reviewer said: "Frightfully nice; like war at tea-time". Has Trelawnyd got a Lady Beldon-type to present the Flower Show cups?

Was going to say the blogpost was rather beautifully written. But Petra's told me not to 'pander'; so I'd better say it sucked. Lol.

    1. I was just thinking that Daniel Craig Blue is such a wonderful name for a color. I still think that 'Elephant's Breath' by Farrow and Ball is genius.

  16. I think most people getting on in years could do with being out of focus; I know I certainly could, and perhaps WILL from now on.

How cool is that - an actual Spitfire!

The kind of day you describe is my favourite of the whole year.

  17. Um. WW2 Spitfires. Have to admit that Australia didn't hear too many of them ... buut the sound of those engines ... evocative to many of us ... um, elders. Have posted this from and Airshow in South Australia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4Gcff59ySA

But most tinsy computers do not have the audio systems to really cope.
(by the way, Spitfires were the "glamour boys".
'twas the Hurricanes that did most of the work).

  22. I love waking up to the view outside your window. We're not close that sunshine yet - but it makes me feel warm to see Winnie bathing in it.

I love Greer Garson, I always wanted to live in that beautiful house even more than I wanted to be like the lady of the house. The curtains were so pretty blowing in the wind...I might have made that wind part up.
Your joy in the garden is contagious!

  28. There is more than a little bit of Muriel George about Winnie, so I wouldn't worry too much about Germans in your pantry! Must be lovely to hear the sound of a Spitfire overhead, you lucky dog . I have just been informed that they had beautiful Merlin engines…how little I know. PS. I also look a lot better out of focus!

  29. My favorite line from Mrs. Miniver and the only one I remember: "She was a good cook, as good cooks go. And as good cooks go, she went.” Your description of Winnie lying in the dirt is perfect. It's incredible how she can make her entire body look like her face!

  30. Lovely blue sky day here in Michigan.
    No drones though . . .
    Spring day here indeed.
Love the last picture, windows flung open, charming little patch of green, mix of plantings in the background. My kind of "like."
Winnie must be enjoying the warmth on her tummy . . .
Snickers finds patches of sun warming through our windows and she stretches out on the carpet in obvious delight.
Today is the first day I have seen little green shoots popping up throughout the gardens. Hellebores, Bleeding Heart, Iris, many varieties, to name a few. Take it easy on your back with the digging . . .
says one who doesn't heed that advice!

  31. John.. your writing style has definatly NOT changed! I love that 'Daniel Craig blue' description - we can all see it too :)
Way over here on the other side of the globe we are slipping into Winter mode.. grey thundery days and lots of squalls with snow flurrys already.
Joy to see Winnie enjoying the sun.
All things Hollywood and bulldogs I was checking out some vintage earings online and came across a stylish pair of Bulldog drop earings by Joseff of Holywood " highly sought after by the serious vintage costume jewellery collector. Joseff was at his heyday during the Hollywood era when he produced a wide selection of beautiful costume jewellery for the leading ladies of the Hollywood film scene.' but like you say probably not to be worn by Mrs Miniver.. however great fun!! and an ode to Winnie yet the $220 AUD price tag is a big high for me :)

Elle, why do you (and John) assume that my observation is a criticism when it might be a compliment? Aren't we all on a learning curve? Stagnant waters, as far as I remember, are preferred by mosquitoes.

    2. U are of course entitled to your own opinion or observation as you put it... however equally I am entitled to disagree.
Seems peculiar to follow up with what would appear to NOT be a compliment by referring to 'stagnant waters'. Your pond must be very muddy!
