A Kid In A Sweet Shop

If you are ever " down in the dumps" I suggest you call around here. Pick Winnie up in the back seat of your car and drive, quicksticks, to the local pet superstore which is located just five miles away.
You know the sort of store I mean.
Spotless shelves with every feed, medication, plaything and grooming implement known to man , nose to nipple with bunnies in glass fronted enclosures, azure blue fish tanks and green smocked sales people smiling sweetly at you from behind the tills.
This is Winnie heaven.
I first found this odd fact out a year ago when she accompanied me into the store when we were picking another dog up from their in-house groomers.
Wide eyed with wonder she investigated every box, packet and snack carefully eyeing up anything that she thought different or interesting and practically wet herself when she turned a corner to see thirty feet of selected balls, squeaky toys and rubber " things" all neat and tidy in their containers.
Their selection of rubber chickens practically gave the old gal an orgasm on the spot and I had to put her on the lead again to prevent an over excited incident from occurring.
(I didn't have enough dosh on my to pay for any damages) but generally she behaved herself, sniffing the boxes, tins and packets with a smile on her big fat face.

As I recall we ambled on.
Carefully and over some time, the guinea pigs were watched and then the ratty things and gerbils in their boxes were given  the a serious once over, then the vet's receptionist had to be greeted as she yawned behind her desk.
To Winnie the store was a place of wonderment, to be savoured slowly like a good wine.
She didn't want rushing!
And so I let her march around, enjoying her enjoyment of such a simple activity.
Her happiness is incredibly infectious .
Remember that if you are ever down and you are in North Wales
Just call around and borrow a bulldog for an hour or so.

  4. I don't drive so no car. Would I get her in my bicycle basket do you think?

  5. I'd happily take Winnie out for the whole day; pet store might be problematic though. Assistants would get twitchy at my ALF t-shirt, and it'd be more 'wolf in the fold', than 'kid in a sweet shop', scenario.

  6. Lovely story. Myself I don't like going in and seeing the poor little rabbits knowing that they are probably going to live most of their lives in a wooden box.

  7. Since I can't drop by that easily, I will count on stories like this to start my day off right. And I will depend on you to give Winnie a kiss from me. ( and the cats )

  8. This reminds me of seeing kids eyes of wonder walking down the toy aisle. Our pets brings us this same joy. I would be honored to take Winnie for a trip, just call me Uncle Stephen when I stop by....

Interesting. Not that you aren't always.

I knew there was something wrong with the world and my shopping in recent years. There are no dogs. Anywhere. Unless, obviously, you are blind - in which case other rules apply - but down here on the South coast you'll never ever see a dog in the shopping center. Not even in a pet shop. Nor Argos where some people definitely qualify as potential bulldog owners. Not to mention Asda (a horrendous experience if ever there was one but they do do a mean line on pulses - catering for, in Cro speak, for "all those Indians").

You need cheering up? Look no further,
    U

  12. Lovely tale. Hardly anything gives me a greater lift than seeing a happy dog. They just can't hide it - and why should they?

  13. I understand this. I figured out several years ago that it feels great to let my dog take his time with the things he loves. I don't rush him like I might have with a pet ten years ago. They bring so much love and pleasure to us as their humans that it feels good to let them set the pace of things.

  14. I remember when we were in Buenos Aires and Pup would always stop at the pet shop on the corner, where they always had some sort of amazing display of toys and foods etc.
He would just stand there and look at everything. My husband teased me that I taught the dog to window shop.
Yes, of course we always went in and bought him a treat !!

  17. What an old sweetheart. I'm sure you made her day. I get that same feeling when I wander into one of those huge candy stores. They carry candies from my youth. It like being a kid again and I always walk out with a smile and a little candy. I gave some of that candy to a childhood friend who recently had a stroke, and she squealed with laughter and excitement as she unwrapped the treat to enjoy.. asking all the while "where in heavens name did you find these?" It certainly made my day.

Echoing Raybeard, there's nothing like the sight of a happy dog to bring a smile to your face. My most recent happy dog sighting was a black Lab proudly carrying an empty plastic water bottle.

  23. I have a "Winnie Story".
After a trip to thehamish's eye specialist we stopped at the pet store. thehamish never has gone before. He walked around sniffing, as we were looking for a few items. Then he saw the duck toys hanging and he wagged his little broken tail. Before we could say witch one do you want he picked one out of the many and carried it around the shop. It was so adorable. Broke my heart.
I would love to take Winnie and thehamish to the toy er pet store.

    cheers, parsnip and thehamish
