We had fantastic seats for The Royal Ballet's Sleeping Beauty
I think I understood it all
King and Queen had a baby ( they didn't dance much)
Lots of fairies jumped around
While posh people applauded from the wings
Good bit when rats ran on with Cruela de Ville
More dancing
A Lass in white frock jumped around some more and Cruela shouts at her
Girl falls asleep
Bloke with massive, lovely thighs leaps around to lots of applause
Lots of others jump around
We all had ice cream
More jumping and dancing
Big Kiss
Marriage
Everyone claps!
It was fantastic
I have never been to a ballet, but I know I would so be like you with the description.
ReplyDeleteI am not Stephen, in case you wondered.
ReplyDeleteWell, of course I am, but not in a tutu.
DeleteWe did wonder, in fact. Alter ego?
DeleteNo, just a similar taste in avatars.
DeleteYou've captured it so succinctly...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful theater, perfect review.
ReplyDeleteSo...just like real life, then?
ReplyDeleteHa ha! Perfect review :)
ReplyDeleteCruella was in Sleeping Beauty!?!? Who cares.....we get to see nice men's thighs in tights!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCarabosse....my favourite ballet character x
DeleteCaraboose caraboose give me a fangdango!
DeletePERFECT REVIEW! and what a lovely theatre!
ReplyDeleteI am so very impressed with your review. I wonder if you could become the "peoples" critic for the news.
ReplyDeletei lost concentration after you said bloke with big thighs....
ReplyDeleteSo did i when i saw them
DeleteSeems to me that it had your full attention, good run-through.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to the ballet, or the opera; give me good old theatre any day!
ReplyDeleteYi find that very hard to believe
DeleteSounds like a great performance - and wonderful seats, weren't you lucky! I love your review - I'll bet the best bit was the blokes with big thighs?I presume you had posh clothes on, and had a lovely meal together somewhere too? Did you stay overnight, or have to get back to your tribe?
ReplyDeleteWe stayed at a nice hotel and dined at Dishoom., a wonderful anglo Indian restaurant
DeleteYes, I think you've given us an excellent, down to earth, no frills, or la di dah language, review there, John. You tell it like it is !
ReplyDeleteI wonderful bit of escapism. So glad that you enjoyed yourself! :)
ReplyDeleteA wonderful.
DeleteForgive me John, but I found this so funny that I've sent it to the Press Office at the ROH!!!
ReplyDeleteIt was the best review that I have read in a while.. I reckon John should write reviews for the press... at least they make complete readable sense..... and gave me a chuckle too
DeleteElizabeth i was chuffed but no reply from them!
DeleteThanks for pic. Now I can see where my boss was sitting. Stalls, right hand side. 84 quid a ticket. She bought 10!Not all posh folk were sitting in the wings!!Glad you enjoyed.x
ReplyDeleteI have only been to one ballet, at a local theatre, ( St. Albans Arena) and I was surprised at how much noise their feet made over the sound of the music!
ReplyDelete'Beauty' is a goody, no doubt about it. Music to sink into and drown in!
ReplyDeleteBest "Sleeping Beauty" review... ever! I might even enjoy thinking of it this way -- if I ever have to suffer through it again.
ReplyDeleteLove the ballet, go to Melbourne 3 times a year.
ReplyDeleteA very descriptive review!

Lol.
Perhaps it will inspire you to take up ballet yourself. I know you are in your mid-fifties now but it's never too late. XXL male ballet tights (green) and adult tutus may be purchased from justballet.co.uk
ReplyDeleteBloke with massive thighs can't be bad!
ReplyDeleteHe was magnificent
DeleteThere .. you've captured the story so wonderfully ... I don't have to go now ;-)
ReplyDeleteI am, however, going to see The Full Monty at Venue Cymru later this month. On my ticket it says 'be aware this contains partial nudity' .... when the tickets arrived I was on the verge of asking for my money back .... only partial nudity !!
Love your synopsis :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed all the jumping around. That's all that ballet looks like to me too.
ReplyDeleteI read this to my daughter, she loved it.x
ReplyDeleteObviously a bright child
DeleteI have been to the Ballet in NYC, London , Paris and South America .. lucky me.
ReplyDeleteMy husband , when he met me, mere girl that I was .. lived in NYC and had friends who were in the NYC Ballet Company.
We went to the ballet every season, the NY and the American Ballet (fabulous), in Paris and in London .. he could drop ballet dancer names with the best of them :)
Yes, he met Margot Fonteyn.
Yes, we both met Mikhail Baryshnikov ... and Rudolph Nureyev ..
Now I am on a ballet starvation diet.
Gotta do something about that...
How wonderful you culture vulture! Fontayne died penniless very sad x
DeleteGreat way to have a good time.
ReplyDeleteI've never enjoyed a ballet more. Thank you for a good morning laugh.
ReplyDeleteWent to the ballet once to see The Nutcracker. wasn't all that impressed.
ReplyDeleteLook at the mathew bournes version on you tube!
DeleteWe took our children to see the Nutcracker, in NY you get to see the NY Ballet Company perform it ... topnotch .. we took them at a very young age and they are both ballet lovers now.
ReplyDeleteI do love the ballet -- and opera, too, for that matter. Wonderful music and all that drama, too ...
ReplyDeleteA well-deserved night off! Good for you.
ReplyDeleteBack home late! Winnie and George are back thanks to Greta and Janet for baby sitting!
ReplyDeleteElizabeth sent my review to the press office of the Royal Ballet...strange as it may seem they didnt reply
Hey hi
I throughly enjoy the ballet. My posture is a little more straight. I bring out some nice pieces of jewels to wear. It's always enjoyable! The Met is in St Louis which is only a few hours away.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone really care about the 'story line' in a ballet? Isn't it all about their dance ability and the lifetime of work they each put into their performances?
ReplyDeleteThat review really cheered me up!! Thanks xx
