Creepy!

Our cottage lies down a winding lane on the western most fringe of the village. The lane meanders from the main road and drops some twenty or thirty feet as it follows the Church boundary wall before reaching my field and the farms down and across the valley.
Mary and I walked up the lane last night and as we turned the corner by the Church gate, I could see the School wall which is covered by a thick hedge. As we were lower than walkers would be on the main road, I could make out the Gothic porch in the old school building just peeping above the hedge.
There was a light on in the doorway, whether it was from a security light or from an open door, I couldn't tell and framed in the light was the clear figure of a person standing quietly.

The rest of the  school was in complete darkness and there was no cars in the small car park that I could see, so I stopped and looked again at the figure when suddenly the light went out.
It was almost as though the figure had seen me watching.
I was suddenly very creeped out.
The school remained in total darkness, and we stopped by the gate to see if any other light came on anywhere to signify that perhaps a cleaner was making their way through the building. We saw nothing.
There was no one to be seen
This was 8.30 pm

  2. You really ought to have investigated. After all, if there'd been any trouble Mary would have come to your aid.

  11. In the 80's we lived in the Gold Rush country of the Sierra Nevada foothills in California. My daughter was a teenager and worked on weekends at a bed and breakfast that was in an old building that had been the headquarters for one of the mines. The Vault Room, which had the safe still in the wall, was said to be haunted. My daughter experienced some weird stuff while cleaning that room. After making the bed she would leave a wrapped chocolate mint on the pillow. Sometimes she would come back to check the room and it would be moved to another spot, even when no one had been there. She saw a figure walking on the balcony, again when no one was there. So one night, I was driving home from a class I was taking and had to pass by the inn. The whole building was dark, except for the Vault Room where the light was blazing. When I went to pick her up from work the next day I asked her boss if anyone had been staying there that night and she kind of gulped and said no. She knew about the rumors and was kind of hesitant to talk about it because she was afraid it would hurt business. But, to the contrary, people often requested that room. Looking for a spine-tingling thrill, I guess!

  12. First you made me fall in love with the description of where you live. It sounds like a lovely area. The rest of the story heighted my love of the creepy darker side of a horror movie - lurking serial killer at the school watching you. Increased heart rate, fight or flight, kick in? At least we know you made it back home safe and
    sound....

  13. Anonymous4:49 pm

I can just imagine a conversation in the pub later.

"So, I'd just locked up the school after picking up some class notes I'd forgotten and I got the feeling that there was someone in the lane watching me. I waited to see if the stranger moved on but there was no noise, just a watchful presence. At that point the timer on the porch light ended and I was plunged into darkness, I sensed a sharp intake of breath from the lurker and hurried on into the night..."
