Who Do You Think You Are?

Winnie isn't well.

Her usual post " in season" accidents looked suspicious on the kitchen floor this morning and after dipsticking a " wee" stain it is clear to me she has some sort of heavy vaginal infection.
The vets are all out on their country calls this morning so I shall take her to the surgery at lunchtime..so watch this space.....I'm a little worried.

Anyhow must fly to catch the bus now in order to collect the car......my sister has just rang...she has the results of our family DNA tests
We are officially 36 % Irish, 20% Scandinavian, 12% British 15% or so West European and 7 % Spanish!
How interesting is that?

Must fly...will update about Winnie a bit later

  1. Paws crossed. Strikes me you are the only mongrel !

  2. Interesting DNA analysis. Which only goes to show we should be careful what we say about immigrants. Most of us have foreign blood of some description. I know I have some Spanish blood somewhere along the line.

It is the 36% Irish that is your problem. Btw, did the missing ask me anything post become too problematic? Good luck with Winnie.

  4. Fingers crossed for Winnie! Very interesting DNA results. I've toyed with doing one of those tests. What company did you all use?

  5. I hope that Winnie is okay and that the vet's bill isn't astronomical. By the way, genetically what is "British" and what is "Western European"? These terms seem far too broad to me.

    1. Western Europe on the DNA results we got covers France, Benelux, Germany and up to Denmark, Switzerland. Austria and Czech Republic appear in both the east and west Europe bubbles.

I think Ancestry is the likely source of the data here. There are other outfits out there.

  6. Keeping my fingers crossed it's nothing serious for Winnie xx

  7. All the best with Winnie. Pumpkin should go for her annual check up and teeth cleaning, but don't have spare funds to hire a van at the moment. She has a way of reacting to the stress that makes public transport impossible (and a hose down after necessary), so will need to wait a month or so.

Haven't really thought about doing the dna test. Over the course of a few free access weekends, I've traced parts of my family tree back to the 1530's in Norfolk & Herefordshire. I've gone from growing up with the certainty that I'm half Welsh to not being to find Welsh roots before the mid 1800's. All hope now hinges on a great grandmother who may be the foundling left after a gypsy camp left town that my nan joked about.

Winnie could have a pyometra (infected uterus), which can be life-threatening. The treatment is usually spaying, and as you know that has its own set of problems in brachycephalic dogs like Winnie. Fingers and toes crossed for her.

c'mon old girl, you still have plenty of years left!

  11. i think it's great that you have the dipsticks and the knowledge of when to use them. The rest of us might have a very sick dog on our hands before we realised.

I hope Winnie is easily treated and I'll be back the moment I wake up to check on her

  12. John, we just found out that my husband has more Neanderthal than 79% of the population. How interesting is that? Fingers crossed for dear Winnie...

  13. Oh poor Winnie. Hope she will be OK.

I would love to have a DNA test done.

  14. Fingers crossed for Winnie.
Your results look similar to mine British/Scandinavian/Spanish. I had 1% western asian. That's intriguing.

  15. All the best for your Winnie. What exactly constitutes "Western European"?

  16. I hope Winnie's ok. She's such a sweetie.

  17. Wishing Winnie well. I would love to know my 'roots'! You have a lot of Scandinavian DNA - maybe that's why you like Scandi and 'noir' films and dramas? x

  19. I'm worried about Winnie.

  20. I will worry about Winnie until you post back the good news that she is on antibiotics and otherwise just fine.

Except for the iffy part of my dna where there are Germans :) I am Scottish/English ... US citizen by happenstance.

  21. Hoping for good news about Winnie.

  22. Most people I know who had their DNA researched have a percentage of Scandinavian in them (including me). Those Vikings got around.

Hoping that Winnie will be OK.

  26. Hope things turn out alright with Winnie, poor thing.

I've been wanting to DNA testing and think I'll send off for it today (thanks for the push). I hope I'm not what I think I am, which is not much of a mix at all.

  27. Poor girl, fingers and paws crossed that a quick result and treatment sort her out x

  28. Hope that Winnie will be OK.....not my favourite looking dogs, but I have grown to be fond of her! Bit worried that it is now gone 4 and no update. I have seen rather too much of the vets' surgery lately as I have a yorkie with possible cruciate ligament damage, and the cat died Friday night at home, so had to take his little body to the vet on Saturday too.

  29. Hugs to Winnie! Poor baby.

  30. I did my test with Ancestry.com. I was adopted as a baby. My results are Europe 100%:
Great Britain 47%,Ireland 31%,Europe West 13%,Trace Regions 9%. I appear to be more British/Irish than you.

  31. Fingers crossed for Winnie...and I'm delighted you have some Irish heritage!

  32. Hope Winnie will be OK - we don't want anything to happen to our darling girl.

  35. Poor girl. I hope things are going all right.

I would love to have a DNA test done but am too cheap to pay for it.

  36. DNA test so much fun. I found out I was about 36% Welch and 13% Irish...plus others thrown in for good measure. Had No idea there was any Welch! We always thought we were Irish.

  37. You old celt, you. I must do that some time, but would hate to dash my fifty plus percent Irish heritage. Will check in for Winnie.

  38. Poor Winnie :-(

I always guessed you were a mongrel ... and in a house full of pedigree dogs ;-)

  40. I assumed that anyone of my siblings or myself could take one of these DNA tests and the results would apply to us all. However my sister, who is a lab tech, did some internet research and found that one siblings genetics aren't necessarily the same as another sibling's, even when both have the same parents! Which doesn't make sense to me, but anyway ... it means we'd each have to do our own test. Dammit. -Kate in Saskatchewan

  41. How interesting is that? I am 35% Irish, 27% British, 25% Western European and 9% Scandinavian. My family has been in the US since the 1600's. What's the likelihood that I'd be more British than you? I would point out that every child gets a different combination of their ancestral genes. Your gene pool is likely to vary from your sisters.

    ReplyDelete
  42. took me a while to dig out the info but I am about as white as it gets...57% England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland; 32% Germany, France; 8% Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden); 2% European Jewish (Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, Israel); 1% Finland. my sister does genealogy and has traced one line back to the 900s in Denmark.

  43. John, sorry to hear about Winnie. I scrolled this far back to get the scoop. Don't know why they didn't show up in my feed. Hope she's doing better.
