Slapped Hard With A Velvet Glove

Hollywood Royalty Meryl Streep flexed the most dignified part of her speech giving skills last night with the most effective of put downs against Donald Trump.
Stating that his mocking of a disabled journalist was something that " broke her heart" Streep, in the hushed motherly tones added
"It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege and power and the capacity to fight back. It, it kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can’t get it out my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life. And this instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.
Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose"
The only reply Trump could think to give was to call Streep " overrated"
That comment alone proves to the world that he is an arsehole!

  1. Yes, I've just heard about D.T.'s reaction - Ms Streep OVER-RATED? I'm aware that some do think that she acts her head off, but I'd say that many times more people, myself included, think she's the finest screen actress of not just our generation but of since several generations past. So, D.T. - who would you claim to be a truly 'great' actress? Obviously someone who shares your brand of politics. Would that be, just as an example plucked out of the air, Shirley Temple?

  2. For those who didn't see Trump's angry Twitter response to this, it was:-
"Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky."
What a tosser! Meryl Streep is a truly brilliant film actress with many amazing performances both behind and ahead of her. In contrast, Trump is an estate agent... or what Americans would call a realtor.

  7. Every time I think about the fact that he will be our president...I really want to throw up. Its so very sad. You can feel the disappointment and sadness and disbelief here in America. I really think it affected a lot of people this Christmas season. No one said anything, but there was a underlying sense of sadness this year. Ms. Streep in my opinion was way too kind. More people should speak out, but when what good will it so? He just tweets back a childish response. Its terrible and its going to be a long four years.

  14. Meryl Streep spoke the truth. I am disabled and have been for nearly 20 years (I have MS, plus other problems not worth mentioning here) I always try to make a joke of my disabilities, especially on the days I'm confined to a wheel chair My husband always plays along. Like parking my wheelchair on a steep slope and saying, 'Shall I take the brakes off now?
And I'll say, 'yes, let's' see if we can break the record for the most broken bones in one crash! I know it's not sidesplitting humour (unless he actually lets me go) but it keeps us amused.). Trump scares me because he doesn't seem to have any grasp on reality, and yes I did see Outnumbered, and when I saw the kids I felt so old.

I also lived in Hollywood and have little respect for the hypocritical, condescending liberal airheads who live there.

Streep is a talented actress but is also rather lame without a cue card to read. Remember the time she testified in Congress that children were dying from eating apples?

      Delete
    3. Let us remember that this total of 59 million voters with morality problems is only about one quarter of the entire number of eligible voters in the US. And the other candidate won the popular vote by almost 3 million votes. We have a big problem with voter turnout and with partisan politics which pits liberal against conservative and demeans the important work of consensus building. But, as a liberal citizen of the US, I must hold hope that these deplorable, shamelessly morally bankrupt politicians and their supporters are dying out. This is backlash, regressive politics rearing its ugly head for a last gasp before the death knell of a racist, sexist, self-interested party of fascists who have never held the nation's prosperity or its citizens in any esteem. They are bought and paid for whores to our corporatocracy. If you look at the demographic maps by age of voter in this past Presidential election you see a sea of blue among those 18 to 25. That is something to be hopeful for and a place to begin building a better future far removed from the agenda of Putin, his ugly orange pig, or the entire Republican party which will carry this shame throughout history. We are not all fascist here.

My gay daughter lives in a university town and the 18 to 25 didn't vote. She works at a coffee shop and was shocked. They couldn't care and this was a state that voted for Bernie ! It seems if anyone does get out to vote it is the over 65 group.
I am a Handicapped, grayed haired, overweight, tax paying 70 year old Conservative Democrat with a gay daughter. I have voted in every election and rarely get anyone I vote for in.
Because I do not live in the liberal pc east and west coast bubble, my vote never counts, plus I get to pay for everything with no help for our state.
Did I vote Trump NO ! but I did not vote Hillary either. I know too much about both of them to vote for either. I live in a poor small state that doesn't get any help from the government. We get passed over on the way to juicy monied states.
I keep saying this will be my last year to vote but I show up every 2 and 4 years to cast my ballot.
If the Brexit vote said anything it paved the way for Trump.
I can only hope for the best and vote in 2 years in the House of Representatives election.

I could tell you something about the "thin skinned". But then Trump and some of your readers - not that they'd recognize themselves - might take umbrage. Vain, full of themselves yet deeply insecure; in constant need to be validated and propped up by others to feel even vaguely worthy. Whatever Trump has to tweet (tweet? how cute) in reply, I dare say it's all water down Streep's back.

Millions are unhappy with the 2016 election results. While I applaud Ms. Streep (she IS a classy lady), as I see it, both main parties in D.C. have 2 - 2.5 years to pull their heads out of their backsides and come up with some solid choices for 2020's election. Preferably not a dozen or more per party, candidates who haven't been in politics since dirt was new, who behave like intelligent adults, have strength of character, and understand the complex population that is America.
Cameras loved a younger Bill Clinton. So did many voters in the U.S. Instead of wailing and gnashing of teeth for 4 years, there should be a nationwide search for a modern day equivalent. Male or female. White, black or whatever color. Just my opinion. Our election results should be a lesson to all countries.

What we *can* do is work towards common goals in our own communities, learning how to disagree respectfully, without anger, accusation and chastisement. We can accept disappointment and be kind to those whose ideology we don't embrace. My grandmother always said, "you'll attract more bees with honey than with vinegar." Whenever I would talk to people about the election I wouldn't get a firm answer one way or the other. People were evasive. They wouldn't talk to me, they wouldn't talk to pollsters etc. I knew there would be a ground swell of support for (t)Rump. This has been discounted, but (t)Rump signs were EVERYWHERE. It reminded me of the Nixon/McGovern race in 1972. People despised Richard Nixon and rightly so, but he won in a landslide and attributed it to the "great, silent majority". Well, I think it was the same with (t)Rump. All I can say is you wanted him, you got him and you've got to live with the consequences. Sadly we all do, the USA and the world. I'm glad I'm retiring soon...if (t)Rump doesn't dismantle our Social Security (retirement) system.

Actually, that's most terrifying of all, because when it's all done, no matter what the next administration can reverse, the US -- and, yes, its allies -- will have lost many things that cannot be recovered.

Congress has agreed to him becoming President; Obama can serve no more than 8 years, even in an emergency such as this and Republicans will make sure (with Putin's help) that their orange Trump will be the one with his finger on the red button. He's unstoppable - unless someone is willing to lay down his/her life to save their country and the rest of the world. Once that button is pressed, there's no going back. God help us all.

  68. The President Elect has not held a press conference since last July. One is scheduled for this evening, but might not take place. The President Elect has a tendency to change his mind, postpone promises and so forth. Most of his cabinet appointees have yet to submit required ethics forms to the Congress. Republican Congressional leaders wish to rush through Congressional approvals of these appointees this week. The President Elect has established a pattern of ignoring rules and standards. It is indeed a very scary time.
