So I will leave you with this surprised shot of

  1. Cover your butter with a lid or you might contract felinosimilarsis.

  3. And I can barely get my cats to eat cat food.

  4. Is that where you lick the butter like a cat yourself? Lol! I caught my cat doing that too once. Cover the butter!

  5. Ah yes! I thought of you and Albert yesterday. We have started eating proper butter again so don't keep it in the fridge and I discovered a furry face trying to get into the butter dish. Lesson learned. X

Bloody hell, Tom. I am a clairvoyant. No sooner had I read John's post I knew that you - and only you - would come up with the trite and obvious. At least Brando didn't use marge. The guy had class.

    2. I suppose butter IS abit classier than say stork marg or god forbid " I can't believe it's not butter" if you HAVE to mount your girlfriend on the floor of the living room

    5. Butter is definitely better than margarine, but re Last Tango, in light of Brando's and the director's admissions that the actress did not know what was coming -- the director wanted a more "authentic" reaction (to rape???) -- maybe that particular movie isn't the best example of class ... But go, Albert! Sandwiched between the grief post and the guilt one, I'll take the cat and the butter every time.

  8. My old cat, Psychocat, would eat cake, icing, icecream butter....anything sweet. We think she was given lots of cheap, sugar laden cat food before we got her [she was a rescue cat in terrible condition] and she was addicted to sugar! Arilx

  9. With six cats and a Jack Russell all who have a penchant for butter. I had to invest in a heavy duty glass version. Fortunately they have not yet worked out how to shift it. I had wondered why we were getting through
too much butter then I caught the old lady of the outfit giving a training session to the kits. What with her teaching them about butter and Demetri teaching them to drink fresh water from the bathroom sink they are lever taps because of my arthritis we have to keep everything under lock and key. They have their humans well trained! Pattypan

    2. Nah she would eat the lot if she got the chance. Its the cats we have to be watchful of. They have climbing techniques where i become their personal A frame to the worktop and end up as a pincushion in the process. Ouch!

  11. My cat is too old and fat to jump up on the kitchen counter, but he has a thing for that curling ribbon I tie up gifts with. I can't leave birthday or Christmas presents out or else he'll chew the curls off. He doesn't eat them but I'll find the saliva drenched wad in a heap nearby.

You may, or not, like me for this, John. There is the notion that you can't train a cat. I don't mean Albert - he now is an adorable old dog. No new tricks to teach him.

However, start them young as you mean them to go on. If there is one thing I can't stand it's cats on kitchen counters. The hygiene issue is too much for me to bear. Enter new kitten into my household. Main ingredient: Patience. PATIENCE. Every time they jump up onto the counter (usually when you cook and it's too much temptation for them to resist)or the table you gently put the kitten down on the floor. Every single time. Hundreds of times. Thousands of times. Forever. Ad nauseam. Eventually, trust me, suddenly they click - and stop doing it. It's quite extraordinary.

    2. I do not like cats on my kitchen counter. I just bought a spray can that is motion activated, it sends out a spray of air. It worked for daughter's cat so I am trying it.

  15. Pumpkin has a thing about butter too. She follows me to the kitchen, and sits neatly, staring hard until her gaze burns a hole in my back. I'll give her a little sliver, and try to persuade her that there's no more.

We first discovered it when I sat on the floor to eat a crumpet before getting ready for the day. She will clean the melted toasty drips off any plate within her reach.

Howard has taken to putting a dab of butter on an enamel plate and resting it over a warm toaster before handing it to her. He insists he's not spoiling her.

  16. We keep our butter in the cupboard with the dishes except for the five seconds it takes to butter toast!

  17. Oh ick! My cat would probably do that too, but I keep the butter in the refrigerator.

  18. I think all cats adore butter and there is not a cat born who does not think it is entitled to everything left within its reach. I just make sure I never get butter with a corrugated top when I am in a cafe.

  20. Our cats, oddly (and thankfully), have no interest in people food. If they did, a lot of things would be tossed in the bin... like that butter. They even refuse canned tuna unless it's catfood canned tuna.

  21. At Heron Island in the Great Barrier Reef, the tiny Silver Eye birds would get INTO the butter dishes on the breakfast table and have a feast. Footprints in the butter!
