Sharing Your Bed

This morning's pile on...

There are times during the day when stressed new mums have some " peaceful time" in order to get on with jobs, have a bath, talk with a friend uninterrupted, or just to chillax.
These times are often snatched when the baby is napping.
" My time" is early mornings after the first walk of the morning has been completed, as the household  retires " en masse" to bed.
This morning I left them all to it. I had my nursing reregistration paperwork to complete at the kitchen table

Sharing your bed with dogs for a few hours is one thing, sharing your bed with a six foot academic is quite another, and it has always struck me as interesting just how normal sharing an all-too-small duvet, a square of mattress and a few pillows actually becomes when you have embarked in a relationship.
In our early salad days, the musical farts, the teeth grinding, the pig snoring ( me) would often cause a sleepless night and a  fractious morning at work. Now, those noises, the half arsed, middle-of-the-night- tussle to cover every inch of cold body with warm duvet and the get-up-in-the -night for a wazz are just a reassurance.

Now don't get me wrong.....I do occasionally enjoy the bed to myself when the Prof is away and indulging myself in a bout of horizontal star bursts remains an incredibly satisfying thing to do, but the stillness of an empty side of a double bed ( the right side----I always sleep on the left) remains rather troubling after two decades of bed sharing.

I shall leave you with a cute photo of Mary ( shamelessly posted to encourage those last few readers who haven't officially followed me to do so) AND a cute photo of the wonderfully cool Selasi (who I have just seen on a re run of Bake Off )
I am sorry to see him go.

  3. Wonderful!! I've been married 30 years and my son left home 5 years ago - couldn't wait to get in his bedroom and have it all to myself. Still there, and although I love him, get much better sleep on my own (no more snoring). I do share the bed with the cat (animals are welcome). Kind regards, Louise S, Cheshire.

Amazing that you two sleep together in one bed. We not only have separate beds, but separate rooms too. I miss the cuddles and spooning more than the spontaneous fucking, but I need a good night's sleep, and so does he. And, I am very hot in bed, so not a good person to sleep with.

  5. A king size bed, an over-sized duvet, separate bedrooms - I just wish the separate bedrooms where in the same house more than 4 months out of the year.

  6. Those horizontal star bursts in an empty bed are just wonderful.

  7. Now you understand why normal people ask you to seal your old mattress in plastic before taking it away. Also, if I ever come round to yours, please don't offer me a casserol from that dish. I would convert to Islam on the spot.

  8. Are you sure that's cream on his nose? After all, there are rumours about that Paul Hollywood fellow.

  9. What is that red at the side of George's nose John? It looks as though he is clenching a rose between the teeth! I am picturing you doing horizontal star bursts - tee hee! I also sleep on the left hand side of the bed even when I am sleeping alone!

  10. We used to enjoy having two cats on the bed with us, now it disturbs my sleep so much, they are shut up in a different part of the house at night. I have no idea how you manage with that many animals in your bed, but I suppose it's what you are used to. Are they there throughout the whole night, or is it just a morning thing? Mary is a adorable. -Jenn

  11. Just as well that, in the usual doggie fashion, they haven't marked out your bed as their 'territory'.

  12. I look forward to a night alone in bed and as soon as I am in that moment I am wishing otherwise . . .

  13. I shared my bed with my husband for about 40 years .. I never slept well when he was not there .. Thankfully, the only times he was not there were those summers when the children and I stayed at a house we rented at the beach while he stayed in town and worked.
I never slept well without him.
Now I am trying to fill that cold side of the bed with cats. A dog would do but I can't have one in this place but eventually I think a dog will join the family and the cats, dog and I can all fight for a place on the bed. What I have learned ...Value your crowded bed ..

  14. We share our bed with three cats ... or is it that we share a cat bed with them?
Anyhow, cute pictures and a cute baker to boot!

That's quite a dog pile you've got there. And Mary is just adorable. I have to admit that having shared a bed with someone for almost 30 years, I very much enjoy it when I get it all to myself - especially these days since my body temp seems to run a bit hot.

  16. You are adorable, John. But Mary takes the cake!

  17. I like you John Gray. That is all.

  18. That Mary is truly adorable.

  19. OMG, horizontal star burst...that is such a wonderful description. That pic of Mary is so adorable that I was tempted to jump ship and re-up just to get counted again. I share my bed with a 10 pound miniature long-haired dachshund that I would guess takes as much space as your six foot academic.

  20. I love that pile on! And Mary is adorable. 99% of the time I love sharing a bed with my husband who, might I add, is the most amazing man in the world. But that 1% of the time, I need to head over to our couch if the snoring becomes too much to handle or if I get too hot. Menopausal madness has brought on insomnia (I used to be able to sleep through anything) and overheating!

  21. Even when I say I like the bed to myself, Watson and thehamish always sleep at the foot of the bed, I miss the early mornings smash up. I would roll over to my right side and Watson would snuggle up and lay back to back. His warm weighted back next to mine really felt nice. I miss Watson.
Mary is very cute sitting in a pie plate.. But I don't let the cats up on the kitchen counters let alone short legged Scotties.

    cheers, parsnip

My dear John, it's both false economy and false intimacy to share the same duvet. If you want a game of tug of war get a rope.

  25. One of our cats is a bed hog. Who tolerates my partner and myself, but refuses to allow the other cat on the bed.
And yes, sometimes there is a LOT of charm to having the bed to yourself.

  26. You are shameless! Dog in a pot - cuteness abounds.

  27. You need a King size duvet if you haven't already got one. Saves having to pull it over all the time lol

    1. That's what I was going to say - super king though. We have one for winter and downsize to the queen for the warmer months when the option to hang a limb out to cool down becomes necessary. I don't know who these tiny people are whose contours are sufficiently low enough to make a regulation duvet big enough all year around. They are not us!

  28. Aren't you forever having to wash the quilt covers and pillowcases? paws and possibly pooh everywhere? our cats are banned from the bedroom now as I finally got fed up of putting a clean white quilt set on it and then seeing a trail of cat paws across it!...I imagine the size of the bed is dictated by the size of the room and anyway cosying up is fun...although now we are empty nesters and I snore like a drunken man now and again we have seperate bedrooms..but I don't like it x

  29. No animals on our bed when we're in it. They are allowed on during the day once it's made and a top quilt is added. Rosy sits waiting for me to make it .... and comes to tell me if I haven't.

Touting for more Followers with cute doggy pictures is so bad ;-)

  30. Mary is so cute! I've slept by myself, with just the cats for many years. I have insomnia so I'm a night owl. 😴 with someone doesn't sound enticing anymore.

  31. I used to tease my husband about not needing a comforter. , he supplied enough heat for the two of us. He was a snuggler but hated it when I put cold hands or feet on him while he slept :)
