Poundland/ lodge Moor

I went to the poundland store today which is unfortunately full of the great unwashed.
But it was a fruitful visit as for only four whole pound coins
I bought a washing up bowl, cleaning wipes for the car, a set of sports earphones ( so I Can listen to music when out for my power walks) and a cd of Cher's love Hurts album.

I have not heard this track for an absolute age, but it brought back some wonderful memories
It's Fires Of Eden and although this is the one and only YouTube version available, it will do as it reminds me of singing along to it after too many beers with some nursing friends and a group of rehabing spinal injury patients all in their wheelchairs in the bar of the Three Merry Lads, which was located by the gates of Lodge Moor Hospital.
Two sets of young people
Therapists and patients
All sharing a good time

I sang along with the cd at the top of my voice on the way home
Like I said HAPPY DAYS

    2. Fair enough. We have Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar General. Only one is one dollar for everything. Dollar Tree, my favorite.

  7. I remember two lads who decided to go on the Razz in Sheffield and came back in a taxi. One fell out of his chair and another nurse and I ran down with the hoist and got him back upstairs before we got caught...get was so drunk we couldn't get him to even sit up and of course I got the giggles! The taxi driver was in hysterics too. Eventually, we got him back in his chair and with much effort back upstairs. That night he slept in his clothes after he flung his arms round me and told me he loved me - plus at 3am in the morning I wasn't going to wake the ward up - even if he was! Next day - I woke the bugger up at 6am for his morning cares - normally I'm quiet but not that morning! Oh the Joy's of Spinal Nursing! XxX I Love It! XxX

  9. Here in the US, they are called Dollar Stores and I love them !
When packing to move from NY to Fl .. I bought about a dozen big plastic bins with lids that lock on, for packing, then the movers put them into large boxes and Bobs Your Uncle !
When they arrived here, after lolling around in a storage facility for a couple of months, everything inside was clean and fresh.
    I heart Dollar Stores lol
I didn't feel unwashed shopping in the store in NY ..
I don't remember any Cher songs anymore ... sigh ... losing my memory can have its up- sides I guess.

  10. I have a Best of Cher album, but I don't believe it has that song on it. I'll have to visit that poundstore.

  11. I am a Dollar Store fan, even though things go as high as twenty dollars in a couple of ours! They're still great deals, though. Does anyone remember the 5-cent-to-a-dollar stores back in the 60's? We did all our Christmas shopping there when we were kids.

Poundland. Sorry, I just can't do it. Same with Iceland and TK Max.
I must have become a bit of a snob over the years, but it's having large numbers of the great unwashed crammed into one place that puts me off.

  14. I've never been inside a Poundland store. (Said in snooty tone as, when in 'Importance/Earnest' Gwendolen says to Cecily - "I am glad to say that I have never seen a spade.")

  15. We went in there lad Saturday. Everyone was pretty clean actually, but there were a lot of tourists ...perhaps the unwashed locals were still in bed 😉 We bought something for our little piggies to wear, I'll have to put the photos on my blog 😊

  16. I don't understand washing up bowls. We just wash our dishes in the sink. Those of us without dishwashing machines that is.

    1. If you've got pots soaking or waiting to be washed in a washing up bowl you can still pour things away down the side of the bowl and down the plughole. If you just have pots in the sink you lose access to the plughole!!

Unless of course your proper posh and have a double sink thingy in the middle, which not a lot of folk do in small Welsh cottages.

  17. You can save even more money by going to the 99p shop, you know.

  18. In St. Albans there is a Poundland right next to a 99p Store. There was somewhat of an outcry when the second one opened! Poundland is great, I always visit our nearest one when I go to get the dogs' food/treats as it is next door to Pets at Home ( which is also a great shop) If you are picky about what you buy, there are some good bargains to be had. The one I use is on a small retail park, and never very busy in the week. Not noticed any unwashed either. I also do all my food shopping at Waitrose, so I get both ends of the shopping spectrum!

  19. Are you sure that's Cher?
I think Poundland came into being after we left the UK, so have never been into one. Have Euro shops, which are the same idea, probably selling the same things too. Most of it is made in China.

  20. I know where "The Three Merry Lads" is located and it's about half a mile from the gates of the Lodge Moor Hospital site - which is of course now a housing estate. The tower remains.

  21. Poundland depressed me like that was what it was meant to do. Everybody looked suitably depressed. I never went again. Like you are supposed to feel cheerful and wow because everything is a £1 but you mustn't show your cheerfulness when in Waitrose the same thing is only 75p but because it's Waitrose you couldn't go in there because you might have to feel and look happy.

  22. Our dollar stores are great for party goods and wrapping and shipping products. These are all things you need but get rid of quickly.
