On a whim of nostalgic loyalty the Prof and I went to see Absolutely Fabulous -The Movie this evening. I didn't expect that much; film versions of half hour sit coms never come out very well.
But this effort, which is more reminiscent of the 1970's Holiday on the Buses, is truly, truly awful.
Whether it is the limp script or tired actors but the famous Sanders and Lumley chemistry is just not present and I spent 90minutes feeling rather sad for the desperation of it all.
2/10
How sad. I loved the shoe
ReplyDeleteShow, the shoes too
ReplyDeleteI suspect it will only get a limited release over here. I thought the trailer looked desperate with outdated humor. It's not on my list.

ReplyDeleteWhat you've written echoes what I thought when I recently saw the film's trailer before actually seeing "A Bigger Splash."
ReplyDeleteThe Ab Fab movie should never have been made. Let us find the producers and ask them about their decision. Or not.
Best wishes.
Thanks John, you've saved me the time and the ticket price. I think I'll just remember them in their heyday and give the movie a miss.
ReplyDeleteOh that is disappointing, but that's what happens when you try too hard. Thirty minutes of those two is the perfect amount of time and Patsy and Eddie would be the first to agree,
ReplyDeleteI'll wait till it comes on TV on a wet Sunday afternoon.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to make lightning strike the same place twice. They had their moment in the sun, it's over, can't get it back now no matter how much they need the money.
ReplyDeleteGosh, and I was looking forward to it too !
ReplyDeleteThat's awfully disappointing. My friend Marla and I were planning to go see it because we loved the original show. Damn.
ReplyDeleteSee my riposte below, Jenn.
DeleteThank you, you've reinforced my decision to avoid it at all costs.
ReplyDeleteNO it wasn't! No it wasn't! For madly keen AbFab fans of the TV series (amongst whom I do NOT number myself) this film may not have hit the heights that they remember affectionately, but there were more than enough chuckles and chortles in this for me to justify the effort and expense paid. I gave it a '7'. So, while not doubting in the least J.G.'s sincerity (who ever could?) I suggest y'all take his verdict with a generous pinch of Saxa and go see with a determination to make up your own mind. (Mind you, if it turns out that you agree with him don't blame ME!)
ReplyDeleteThank you! So maybe my friend and I will go after all. I told her that we'd have to have champagne beforehand (and have one of the husbands drop us off) so that might help, too!
DeleteFor that relief much thanks, J.
DeleteEnjoyed the show at the time, but like many things, it's best left as a happy memory. Can you think of any British TV show that has successfully made it to the large screen? I can't.
ReplyDeleteInbetweeners
DeleteOh dear, I've never seen that one !
DeleteI liked the Alan Partridge film.
DeleteTHAT was funny
DeleteNever liked the show so I doubt I'd like the film!
ReplyDeleteI loved the earlier series of AbFab but it lost appeal the longer they dragged it out.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the trailer for this new film, well... you've just confirmed my expectations.
P'raps you might enjoy our (New Zealand's) latest movie 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople'. It has been acclaimed to be even better than Taika Waititi's last three movies 'Boy', 'What We Do In The Shadows' and 'Eagle Vs. Shark', all of which I personally recommend highly too! Opens in the UK in September.
ReplyDeletePS, you are a TWD fan, aren't you? You MUST see WWDITS! (What We Do In The Shadows)
DeleteOff to google them all
DeleteI can not wait for "Hunt For The Wilderpeople" !
DeleteOh I loved it and laughed all the way through, expected it to be over the top!. We did go for some Boley darling before watching it!.😀. Perhaps that's the secret!. He he
ReplyDeleteOh dear! I have a gig playing Edina with a bunch of male drag queens playing Patsy, Kate moss and Bubble on 10 and 11 august, warming up the audience. We may have to work harder than we thought!
ReplyDeleteI liken it to Torvill and Dean - they should have quite when they were ahead, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the warning. I liked Debra's comment above!
ReplyDeleteHow sad ... I will see it anyway because I am starved for anything that is not mediocre blood and guts from big studios with bad writers.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, today I think I am going to see something in the new local cinema .. or shop for shoes. Hmmmm which do I want to do ...
I`ve just been enjoying a re visit to the series on netflix so was pondering the film.....dont think I`ll bother then.
ReplyDeleteOh I'm disappointed to hear this as I was looking forward to seeing the film (if it makes it over here). Then again, everyone's taste is different. I love Mrs. Brown's Boys but bought the movie and found it stupid to say the least. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Anna
ReplyDeleteWe loved it and gave it a joint 7.
ReplyDeleteYou just have to go into the cinema in the mood for a good laugh and take all the jokes as they come. No it's not hysterically funny and Patsy walking into things wears a bit thin but it's very reminiscent of the later episodes of the series.
If you expect to be dazzled and amazed forget it, if you just want a couple of hours of light relief from all the shit that's going on in the world at the moment it's just the job!
At this point in life, an hour and a half is much too long for me to waste.
