On My Own

Or so the waif Eponine warbled sadly before she was shot up the Rue de Public in les Miserables....with the Prof away I took myself off for an afternoon showing of the gentle Manhattan Based comedy Learning To Drive .
I went partly because I adore Patricia Clarkson and partly because I heard her co star Ben Kingsley being interviewed about the movie on Front Row.
He has a rather attractive and economical way of describing his work

I am used in going to art house movies on my own, and to be honest , it's a lovely pastime to have, but sometimes, I do long to talk about the movie with someone as soon as the last reel is over.

Today, as I was walking out of the deserted cinema, I spied just one woman exiting her seat and as I passed her, I tried to engage her with a gushing " Wasn't Clarkson wonderful?"

The woman looked puzzled........." who?" She said

Fucking Welsh audiences!

  3. It was a public holiday here yesterday and for the first time in my life I went to two movies in one day, at an arthouse cinema I haven't been to before. It was quite the adventure.
The man who knew Infinity was fabulous. Queen of the Desert, less so

  4. Your last remark was instructive. I didn't realise that that is what Welsh people got up to when visiting the cinema. Personally, I prefer to watch the film.

  5. While living in NYC I was never alone in a movie as the seats fill elbow to elbow and so you have 2 seat mates who become good pals by movie's end.

  7. I am not missing NY yet but I did always love a good film on a summer afternoon .. We used to go to the little Plaza Theatre, right by the Plaza Hotel ..in Buenos Aires, Thursday was the day they changed the weeks films so we would go in the afternoon, and see a film, then walk home chattering away about our thoughts on the movie.. the acting etc,
A regular little Siskel & Ebert every Thursday :)
Those are the small things , the sweet memories that a person saves and one day takes out and remembers and smiles ..

  13. This hasn't come to these parts yet, though I suppose when it does I'll go. Not too keen on SIR(!) Ben. The only time he really impressed me was as.....(yes, you guessed it).... Ghandi.

I've always preferred to go to the cinema alone, though knowing no one else it's the only option I have nowadays. But, like you, after the film is over I do also long to discuss it with someone - ANYone! Maybe that's precisely the need that the blogs supply for both you and I.

  14. Isn't Winifred receptive to discussion (with facial expression) - she always looks so wise?

  15. A slight change of subject John, I watched Jurassic World in 3D yesterday afternoon, Chris Pratt is indeed gorgeous, and his bum looks very, very squeezable in 3D! X

  16. Two of my favourite films have Clarkson in - The Station Agent and Welcome to Collingwood. The first is very poignant and second hysterical. I am hoping to see Driving Lessons soon.

  17. Here in a small New England town we have a wonderful independent art cinema. I go every week after volunteering in it's concession stand. I sit alone but everyone in the theater is someone I know so I have the best of both, alone for the film itself but friends to discuss it with. I loved this film and would go to see Patricia Clarkson read the phone book.
    Cheers

  18. I thought the movie was quite sweet, and both actors were perfect in their roles.

  19. This film sounds interesting - always love Clarkson. I saw Queen of the Desert on the plane ride home from UK (not much to choose from). I was interested enough to look up the book when I got home, but must say that this was not Kidman's best performance by a long shot. Skip the movie, read the book.

  20. LOL! Maybe she was in the wrong theater by mistake! I love Patricia Clarkson too...

  23. Do check out The Martian. Not an action film but a moving, funny and very good portrayal of a man marooned alone. Mark Wahlberg is surprisingly good and not a bit 'Bourne Ultimatumish'. 'I'm going to have to science the shit out of this' - and he does - literally!

  24. Except of course it's Matt Damon - nothing like feeling really stupid in a public forum! Doh!
My stupidity aside (please cast it aside) it really is a great film.
