Succession Planning

Yesterday afternoon, just after the Church service finished I noted that the lady from the old police house had taken Auntie Glad's arm and was walking her home. Auntie Glad should be using her new foldable white cane but doesn't fetch it out on the Church walk.
It's a walk she can probably complete in her sleep.
" Police House Lady" is fairly new to the village and she reminds me of one of the characters of the wartime tv show Home Fires .in the fact that she looks a capable and pragmatic sort who wouldn't flap under pressure. She has two adult sons living with her, both with their own  specific needs, one of whom I met yesterday when she came around for eggs. I gave her an extra goose egg as she had a great deal of baking to do.
"I think I may ask her to join the Flower Show Committee " I told The Prof over his lamb tagine , "I've never liked the fact we have only 13 official members"

  1. Good thinking! An unflappable woman is always an asset on any committee!

  2. If she bakes good cakes she will be a great asset. And she doesn't seem afraid of hard work. Good thinking on your part.

    3. I honestly don't know, John - I know it symbolises growth and fertility. Gamblers like the number 13 - but there are contradictions, that Rachel reminded me of, and that is never have 13 diners around a table; it brings bad luck. x

    6. Judas was the 13th person at the Last Supper of Christ on Maundy Thursday before the Crucifixion. Hence it is considered unlucky.

  5. I love people watching, its the part of my job and then discovering whether your assumptions are correct when you finally meet the person! Its the part of my job I'll miss when I retire later this year. Loving Home Fires at the moment and the character above Pat Simms.

  6. They fixed my spine on the 13th, I will never fear the 13th again - really great things can happen on the 13th.

  8. Ah, the sizing up of the new kid - starts in nursery school and never really ends, does it? Back in my church committee days I well remember the confabs about whether or not some new arrival might be fodder for the Christmas-infantry, and if so what element. Someone terribly promising might end up with the silent auction, while those less so might have to settle for the anything-for-a-dollar stall or, worse yet, cleanup...

  9. Unflappable and good at baking - sadly I don't think I would qualify to join your committee.

  10. 13 members? Are you sure you're not the Flower Show COVEN?

  11. Ha ha Debra, between you and John's post, there is grounds for an excellent plot.
I think that 13 was a pagan lucky number, blue moons and all. Then the Romans came in and messed it all up.

  13. The police house lady's sons have specific needs? So do I mate. A mug of hot builder's tea and a couple of "Hob Nobs". Shirley always has that "Home Fires" on. What a load of unbelievable, badly-developed honeysweet rubbish! I have a specific need to switch it off.

  14. You know what they say - if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. She sounds like a kind soul as well, helping Auntie Glad. A good addition to your village.

  15. Just what you need - she sounds as though she'll keep you all in order !
