The Same Boat - The Walking Dead

In six series The Walking Dead ,has never produced a wholly female dominated episode. The Grove in series 4 was centred around  Carol's relationship with the pre teen psychopath Lizzie but it was effectively a two hander between Carol and Tyreese. That's as far as it goes I think.
Like the female protagonists in 1970s disaster movies, women in The Walking Dead have often been sidelined to let the men shine , but since Melissa McBride was given her acting muscles a real flex  to let the mosey Carol shine into something far more interesting  , she and the other powerful women of the zombie Apocalypse ( Michonne, Andrea, and Maggie ) have proved to be some of the most popular characters in the show over the years.
In The Same Boat  we follow Carol and the pregnant Maggie as they are kept captive by the savvie Saviour women. The episode cleverly see saws in a " is Carol as frightened as she is making out? " way
And both Mc Bride as Carol and Lauren Cohen as Maggie really do shine in the more meatier and well rounded roles as they realise that they are not really any different to the women keeping them captive.

Maggie and Carol

The Same Boat had great pace and tension , and it keeps the audience on their toes right to thevery end...it also has quite a bit to say about the role of women in this brutal new world . That is until Our girls eventually turn the tables and rule the day.
But...as usual.......they win at a cost.....
Nice to see Daryl giving Carol a hug too!

  1. Strong Carol was playing the weak, sniffling woman. I'm still wondering how she survived all alone way back when Rick sent her on her way! It was a very good show and I can't wait for next week! …and, I want Maggie to have that baby!

  3. Hey John: The best thing about this episode is how I interpreted as those two (and I hope most of the group) are re-thinking their new 'kill now, ask questions later' approach which put me off this show a few weeks ago...but I'm still watching and hoping.
Oh another good thing - seeing Alicia Witt.

  4. What an intense episode... with Carol, I think we may be seeing the onset of the psychotic break I predicted a while back. It would be in keeping; she was in a situation which would have felt very similar to the trauma she had experienced at her husband's hands and her primary adversary, Paula, kept reinforcing the negativity which would already be in Carol's mind. What she had to do to survive would also play into it, it's a storyline to keep an eye on.

It was good to she and Maggie shine and it will be interesting to see how their changed attitudes will affect the characters and story lines.

    3. As do I John, I feel a deep empathy with her character, but Game of Thrones has set a sorry precedent for killing off characters.

Btw, the photo is up. =)

  6. Y'all need to catch The Talking Dead if you can, Melissa McBride was on it (and Alicia Witt) amazing hearing where their characters were coming from and what Melissa was thinking/feeling as the character. She's already been conflicted about taking human lives and this is giving her a crisis of conscience...are they indeed morphing into the bad guys? Are they just as wrong? It was a wonderful interview....

Episode was amazing and the almost exclusive female performances were just top notch! I'm SO freakin' nervous about the upcoming last few...ugh.

    But for now, I'm happy.

    1. We get The Talking Dead now, like you, it's shown right after the show ( with the show repeated right after)
Melissa is rather shy, is she not?

  7. It was a great episode - and Carol and Daryl had a hug at the end, we have not had enough Carol and Daryl together in this series.

  10. I think Carol was playing the fearful mouse just like she did when they first came to Alexandria...to keep the 'others' off guard. It also gave her an excuse to use the rosary to cut through her tape. It gives her an advantage when push finally comes to shove as they aren't expecting strong Carol. I do think though that she is becoming troubled with this act of aggression towards the Negan group. however her personal part, killing the women, was still an act of self defense for her and Maggie, being captives as they were. she was loathe to kill a woman who she could easily identify with. glad to see Daryl's first concern was for Carol. and whoa...why does everyone think Maggie or Carol will be killed!

    1. I don't think Maggie is ever going to have that baby, Glen was saved, but will he wish that he wasn't? Also what is this Negan thing, I haven't read the comics, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan is going to be playing Negan, so they are not all Negan???
