No Way Out : Walking Dead ( Spoilers)

The Alexandrians

Ok, apologies for the zombie-fest today, but I couldn't wait until this evening to watch the return of my favourite tv show...tomorrow I am sure I shall return to cooking rhubarb, dog poo and Prof stories, but today, unashamedly, I am indulging myself with the undead and teen obsessions of Daryl Dixon.

All historical dramas of epic scale have a heroic moment, a moment that perhaps goes down in folklore , a story to be told around the fire to scare the children.
The Walking Dead has been waiting for such a story in a long time.
For ages we have seen a noticeable chasm between "Team Rick " and " Team Alexandria" . Rick's team,  for the most part, is a self sufficient, slightly elitist, fighting force whereas the Alexandrians were seen as soft and inexperienced.
Both groups slightly mistrusting of the other.
What was needed was something to draw both factions together, and in episode 9 No Way Out, we saw the most epic of battles when the entire population of Alexandria joined forces to repel the  invading walkers.
Ok forget the holes in the narrative ( sudden darkness, Glen surviving yet again a near death experience and the Wolf suddenly turning into Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm in order to save Denise)
It was all great television with useless underdogs such as moody teen Enid, Eugene the nerd and lumpy doctor Denise picking up their weapons , and -in the words of that awful vicar- turned baby rescuer Gabriel - " taking arms to save their town"
It was also great to see Daryl flex his considerable biceps with a newly acquired rocket launcher , to blast Negan's henchmen right out of the bottoms of their leather boots
It was a bravura, exciting and back on form episode.
Great fun

  1. Darryl was definitely the hero of the day... both with the rocket launcher and his quick thinking with the gas tanker and pond. I've read that an upcoming episode this season has Darryl and Rick taking a road trip and, outwith the usual zombie action, etc..., there is going to be a bit of humour to the episode.

    Dark humour, to be sure.

  4. Classic Daryl - rocket launcher and the whole bunch of them gone! It was a great episode - Sam had it coming, I was surprised that Jessie got munched though. So glad Denise survived - cant remember the last time I felt so tense watching an episode of TWD - brilliant - needed a post-episode Amaretto!

  8. I have never watched The Walking Dead and I never intend to, even though it is filmed here in Atlanta and an old work colleague, Tom H., has found work as an extra in some episodes. I frankly have never understood the attraction.

  11. Even though I watch the show ahead of you I don't feel complete until I read you synopsis. They are always so fantastic!

I do agree this was the most rousing episode yet. So proud of Eugene.

Will Carl now have an eye patch like the governor?

  12. somehow I missed what happened to Carl. one minute the little fam was getting munched and then Carl was on the ground and Rick grabbed him up and ran. I'll have to watch it again. but, yah, great episode. I was sure they were going to kill Glen off this time as he dies by the Wolf's hand in the graphic novel but the show doesn't always follow it exactly. if not Glen, then Abraham. and go Daryl!

  13. Brilliant episode, back on form. It needed a clear out as there were too many not doing much characters. Now hopefully it will be a tight zombie fighting force once again, and Carole can lose the little housewife act.

  14. I must admit, I do not watch The Walking Dead because of my deep seated fear of zombies (I was having major anxiety when the Ebola virus broke out) but I must tell you, I work with a guy who looks EXACTLY like Darryl Dixon (but with short hair). :)

  15. One of the other blogs I follow thought this episode was very generic. They think the show has cannon fodder or super heros like Glen who didn't get shot once with all the zombies around him getting killed, Carl getting shot in the eye then recovers right away to Rick fighting zombies like he is Batman ?
I don't watch the show but reading your two reviews is very interesting.
    Like your reviews better.

    cheers, parsnip

  17. Great great episode. Loved it. I have read some negatives around the net but they are nitpicking too much. A zombie apocalypse is believable but bitch about the bullets from the machine gun, ha.

Great episode!!! One of my faves!!
