Fanny Washing

Fanny pristine and gleaming

I understand that I make Trelawnyd sound a little more exciting than it is, what with escaping geese and colourful characters at every turn. The truth is, that like every community on this black Friday, Trelawnyd plods on at it's very own pace.
This morning was spent cleaning out the duck house, puppy lead training, housework and "Fanny" washing.
I was just hoovering Fanny's back seats when a spontaneous round of applause broke out by some neighbours out for a walk. The sight of me actually caring for a car , let alone polishing it within an inch of it's life is still somewhat a rare event here . Everyone I see in the village has commented just how neat Fanny is ......but I am sure most miss the petrie dish that was the old Berlingo.

This  afternoon I have sorted a load of washing out ( how exciting), bleached the bathroom and  made deep mince pies with some donated mincemeat ( thanks Rosemary) whilst listening to classic FM
It has been a relaxing afternoon.

With the cottage peacefully quiet.
The only thing to be heard over the sound of Paganini was the good natured bickering between Mary and Winnie as they fought for possession of an old plastic hairbrush.

This went on for well over an hour

  1. New Welsh proverb - 'Tis better to play with plastic hairbrush than it is to chase a Canada Goose.

  2. Nothing you write about ever sounds ordinary, even when it is exactly that...an ordinary day for you! Today, your mince pies have me drooling and that gleaming car is prize worthy, but, for me, the cherry on top is always seeing your adorable dogs and today's pic of Winnie and her new best friend is too precious! But, being a homemaker and dog Mom (to 5) myself, I know how much work is involved. You just have the most wonderful ability of turning ordinary life into a delightful story and really should write a book, based on your blog! I know it will be a best seller in no time at all and I can easily visualise a series/movie based on your charming stories of the ups and downs of a less than ordinary life :)

  3. Ooooo, I love mincemeat! It's a very old-fashioned treat these days. So many young people don't like it.

  4. Ah, it is the very fact that we can relate to your posts that attracts us so, John! We don't all live in the movie pictures... The highs and lows of everyday regular life are plenty exciting enough to be honest. I love the fact that you have geese and old chickens and your inside gang as well. I also have both the inside gang and the outside gang. Your stories mesh so well with my life!

  6. I feel as if I get to visit Trelawnyd every time you write a post. If I can't get there, then reading your posts is the next best thing.

    Love,

  7. Chris will be pleased that you washed and buffed up fanny! The mince pies look lovely. Have you not had any of Auntie Gladys's scones recently? Who won the hairbrush?

  8. I need you to come and clean my car for me... or at least draw alongside it so that mine looks soooo bad next to your gleaming Fanny that I am shamed into action myself.

Why., why, why with all this rain is my car still a mucky, streaky, yucky thing and WHY did I buy a white car :-(

  9. You have shamed me into cleaning my car :(
    I have never had mincemeat.
My house is sparkling clean and silent. ( I hate it)
Yesterday it was full of laughter , talk, music and baby noise .. (the cats hated it)
Now back to quiet and being alone ... I hate it.

  11. That's one immaculate car, John - surely you're not going to use it !
Looks as though Mary has got the bristles - ouch - so Winnie might end up the winner ! It's amazing the number of chewed handles we have here...

  12. Those mince pies look good. Paul refuses to make any (he is designated pie maker) until Christmas. He says November is not Christmas!

  13. Hello John, just found your site and love it already. I’ve never watched code black, but agree about bringing back GC and the gang, for me nothing will ever compare to ER. Mary and the chair - what a result. And Camilla, she is adorable. The photo of the terriers with their little footprints in the sand is gorgeous. I’m looking forward to reading more about life in your tiny Welsh village.

    1. No...she only gets away with this because she is a puppy. Winnie is incredibly heavy footed with the other dogs but is incredibly gentle with mary as is william

Would love to have my pit bull pups chew a plastic hair brush rather than one each of every pair of shoes I owned! Consider you blessings!!!

  19. Nah no one makes pastry these days even Jamie Oliver advocates buying ready made as is cheap n life too short.

  21. I see by one of your replys that Winnie is very good with Mary - that is so good to hear! Animals play with the strangest things as toys, don't they? Bought toys sit unused while they take a shine to the oddest household items.

    1. I named our car Star .. we bought it at Star Motors in NYC.
Fanny has more of a "ring" to it.
But maybe I am better off, not talking to the mechanics about Fanny having trouble getting started in the mornings or something .

  28. Awww, love that they are such friends now!

Your poor car! My sister and I once had to bring a new horse a long way to get her home. She needed a new name and we thought an old-fashioned one would suit her best so we started trying names and of course came up with Fanny. At first we cracked ourselves up, but once we'd got over that, we started thinking it was a good idea. Then we stopped for petrol, and I opened the horsefloat door and looked in and said, "How's it going, Fanny? " That mare's imagined look of horror has never escaped me. :D We decided we'd better rethink it and by the time she got home her name was Isabeau. It suited her to a T and she liked it much better than Fanny. :) Note to self, be careful when naming an animal when you've been spending a lot of time being silly with your sister!

  29. How ironic (and unbelievably sweet) that the dog who went all moody and hurt at the arrival of a new baby now has a new lease of life, playing games and patiently accepting the sharp teeth and endless energy of that same pup. I love that Winnie.
I love that shiny red car, too - and today I shall get to work on my own 'Wicked Red' Berlingo . . . especially the sandy, gritty, hairy interior. I'm ashamed of it.
