Sometimes I say I have had a shitty shift at work
Today I really did have a shitty shift at work....
I was working alongside an affable despot of a nurse and the two of us had responsibility for three acutely ill patients
we skipped breaks because we had to, coped with bereaved families, hospital red tape and laughed loud and hard ( but with an edge) when I split my pants transferring a lady from one bed to another
After I got home, and after eating a load to shit from McDonalds

Now that's the kind of coworker everyone needs. :)
ReplyDeleteShe's a sweetie
DeleteSounds like you're the kind of co-worker everyone needs... it's a gift to be able to care for others, even more so when you make it easier on those around you.
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas by the by!
And to you....have a lovely time xxx
DeleteAny nurses that work in intensive care - critical care, whatever you call it have a place in heaven in my book! My grandmother wanted me to be a nurse…I can look at a needle and just about pass out!
ReplyDeleteYou do know better than to eat that crappola from McD's! A scotch egg would have been a whole lot better health wise! McD's may be healthier where you are than they are here though. Too much GMOs in the food chain here!
Funny you said that
DeleteOne delightful staff nurse who is only a slip of a thing left me a pressie today on ITU
SHE LEFT ME A SCOTCH EGG and a jar of milicarno coffee
( I ate the scotch egg on the run at 12 pm!)
How sweet was that?
Mighty sweet and thoughtful!!
DeleteMerry Christmas John

ReplyDeleteAnd I'm hot lips houlahan
DeleteCrossed with P.J. Proby by the sound of it! (Maybe you are too young to remember the splitting pants?)
Delete" perhaps you are too just too young"
DeleteI haven't heard that for a while
Ps ok it's Houlihan
DeleteIt's the sort of thing I seem to say to everyone these days.
DeleteWhat? Hot lips?
DeleteOnly by feel.
DeleteYay Greta, the sort of colleague who do their share and help make shitty shifts bearable. Have a happy Christmas John!

Greta is a true glass-half-full kind of girl!
ReplyDeleteA rough sift of making other's lives a little better, is better then an good shift making other's live a lot worse. Thank you for being there. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of coworkers that make my shitty stressful job bearable. They are worth their weight in gold, if you ask me! Merry Christmas, John. You are a prince among men, my dear.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful to have someone to commiserate with at the end of a crappy day. Cheers to you both.
ReplyDeleteIf it weren't for great co-workers - I expect you would find a different job.
ReplyDelete….that's why I miss working (I'm old and retired!), my co-workers were all fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas - peace and joy, mince pies, crackers and all that!
Mary
Greta sounds Greata.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas, John! Wishing you and Chris a happy Christmas. Enjoy! xo
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas John. I will all workers could have you beside them to lighten the load and brighten the day.
ReplyDeleteI've just heard on this morning's news that alcohol intake among the British is reducing quite markedly (I think we'd already heard a hint of that). Before you know it teetotalism could be the latest fad. So let's at least raise a glass to that.
ReplyDeleteHave a merry one, J.G. - and please don't neglect ANY of your pets, Chris included.
Merry Christmas John.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely when someone says or does something kind when you're having a difficult time. A couple of years ago, we were having a very difficult period in our lives. An elderly neighbour, in her eighties, rang my doorbell and presented me with a perfect, beautiful red rose, freshly cut from her garden, to cheer me up. It didn't cost anything but meant so much and was such a thoughtful thing to do.
ReplyDeleteWishing you, Chris and all the animals a peaceful Christmas. And thanks for your wonderful blog and for putting a smile on so many faces this year xx
A wise woman.....have a lovely Xmas John xx
ReplyDeleteShe's a gem. You match!
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas to you, John!
Like minded co-workers are sometimes the only thing that can make a shitty shift bearable, thank goodness you've got them.
ReplyDeleteYou need an emergency stash of scotch eggs MacD's will only make you crash down again later.
But as you say 'hey ho' ....... if it helps :-)
The sort of colleague that makes almost anything bearable and the kind of nurse that anyone would wish for... please don't die, Greta! And a very Happy Christmas to you...and to John and Chris, also!
ReplyDeleteGood for you and Greta. Maccy D's and a glass of wine. Sometimes dirty food is just what you need.
ReplyDeleteI know what they say (I have been told it too) that nurses have a warped sense of humour. You have to so that you survive the job!
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas John, Chris, Winnie, George, Meg, William, Albert & everyone else human or otherwise!
A joyous festive season to you, Chris and your four-legged and feathered family. Your blog is always a pleasure to read. xxx
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I (for the first time ever) split my scrub pants the other day too. They were old but still...my wounded ego may never recover. And I agree whole heartedly with the above sentiment.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas John and Chris, I love your blog it is the place I fall when my life is shite, I always leave heartened and renewed.... the stories, the dogs the cat, the scotch eggs, the arse cleaning on the bench (counter/ draining board) the crocs and the pj pants, the dog straining on the crossing, the churchyard, the chickens and the ducks the turkey who has fetishes (not sure that is right but sounds legend) Jason the despot and Aunty Glad the flower show and cleaning the church. Your life is so worth dipping in to.... and now, now you are getting married .... it gets better and better!!! Why would I go anywhere else for entertainment.... I love you guys and hope your life just gets better and better. I love the 2014 version (despite the Zombie apocalypse shite) (my daughter is a total fan of that btw) Looking so forward to 2015... you guys rock!!! Go you lot!!!
ReplyDeleteXxxxxx
DeleteI'll bet that comradely gesture took the edge off the day. God bless all who look after us in times of trouble.
ReplyDeleteMerry Xmas to you Mr Gray and your husband and your menagerie.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas John (and Chris!) thank you for the smiles this year x
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas John. Thanks for keeping us entertained every day.
ReplyDeleteTwo years ago at this time, wonderful nurses like you and Greta were nursing and caring gently for my dearest younger brother whilst he was in a coma in QE Brum, and being wonderful to us his totally distrait rellies. Thank you all. I will raise a glass of Sloe gin to you all later. Happy Christmas to you, Chris and the menagerie, thank you for your entertaining and informative blog, reminder to self to stock up on screen cleaner for the coffee splattered laptop too!
ReplyDeleteI should have added that he made a full recovery, we were blessed.
DeleteIt shouldn't but it made me cry. Everything does these days.
ReplyDeleteXO

Happy holidays! A great reminder that we should always reach out with a kind word or thought we when we have it; it only takes a minute, and you never know how much it might mean to someone... Not sure why, but this made me think of a funny sign I just saw in a NYC shop. It read: I don't have a bucket list, but my fuck it list is a mile long! Made me laugh :)
ReplyDeleteOne of my friends is an OR nurse, and is on call on Boxing Day. I'll have to share this with her.
ReplyDeleteIn the past, I've had loved ones in hospital over the holidays, and I always breathed prayers of thanks for those hospital folks.
I'll drink to that!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great Christmas.
Look on the bright side - you didn't have Language Line mysteriously not be able to provide three interpreters in the space of an hour.
ReplyDelete(File that with the other things only NHS employees will understand.)
Have a great time off.
That is how good friends / co-workers keep us sane on days when our patience is tested beyond the limits! Thank you for your wonderful blog that typically starts my day here.Merry Christmas to you and Chris and the four leggers
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas John. x (I used to be an angel but my wings fell off.)
