A broody hen has been sitting on her eggs for around 10 days. Every day she needs throwing off them in order to have a drink and a mouthful of corn, so it took me by surprise when I turfed her off this afternoon and found a single chick hatched out underneath her.
( for those that don't know it takes 21 days for a chick to develop in the egg)
How apt for Easter Weekend
Even though I can't quite work out how she did it

DeleteOr rather, why?

How perfectly perfect!
ReplyDeleteThe proof that the cockerel is also in working order I would have thought John. Little sweetie isn't it? Do you think any more will hatch off?
ReplyDeleteIt's a Miracle !

Any excuse to pat a cock! then cheer! Yes I know schoolboy humor....... but made me chuckle
Deleteawww...a new family member!
ReplyDeleteI am happy about your miracle chick, but your comments here made me LOL. Thanks again for always being a bright spot.
ReplyDeleteIt IS an Easter miracle...that or may she stole any hen's egg?
ReplyDeletethat's what I thought. someone else laid it and she stole it... reverse cuckoo
DeleteGood timing on her part, and an Easter gift for you.
ReplyDeleteawww so sweet.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you couls call her or him ? Mary ?
cheers, parsnip
Sweet.
ReplyDeleteHow appropriate! And what a cutie.
ReplyDeleteSomehow I'm reminded of when the wife was pregnant with the first girl...around month 6 she looked at her swollen tummy one afternoon and moaned "good god, will this never end??"
ReplyDeleteI wisely just nodded sympathetically.
Cute chick, did she steal the egg or have it hidden? Nice for the weekend, eh?
ReplyDeleteWow. A chook of talent. Which might include theft.
ReplyDeleteThere really is an Easter Bunny!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely Easter surprise! Do you think a passer by slipped a fertile egg under her when you wasn't looking?
ReplyDeleteA roster and keeping one hid from you for three weeks and you have a chick, how did she hide the egg?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea, how thus happened..not a clue
DeleteI have had two of those how the heck did she hatch one so quick moments. One time I picked up 3 eggs from a friend to place under a broody hen. I ran errands for several hours, waited until evening to place them under broody hen. Next morning I had 3 hatched chicks! I can't believe they survived for so long without warmth. (my friend did not know her hen had been brooding on them either)
ReplyDeleteThe other was a oft broody hen was sitting on plastic placer eggs. The only rooster I has was her son so I didn't want to use her eggs. I was unable to procure the eggs from another farmer so I removed the plastic ones intending her to break her brood. Instead several weeks later she comes out of the barn with one little chick. Upon inspection one real egg was wedged into a half of the plastic egg and hatched. Life finds a way.
Sue, thanks for the comment.... I still cannot quite work out what happened as I only have two broody hens at present
DeleteOnly this one hatched so far.
Answers on a cost card please
Baby Jeebus!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing this chick will be named "Miracle."
ReplyDeleteThey can be so sneaky.....good story.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, She found a hidden egg. :-) Have a wonderful Sunday, and a Blessed Easter, John.
ReplyDeleteOh, I do hope the other eggs are harbouring similar little surprises as well. I'd like to see them all following you in a line (or maybe chicks don't do that).
ReplyDeleteIt's an Easter miracle!
ReplyDeleteHey John - is this one of our babies????
ReplyDeleteYes pam!
DeleteIf you of all people don't know how an egg hatches, then I don't know who does! ,,,oh wait, that's not what you meant! ;-)!!
ReplyDeleteNo no no that story is too good to be true! I'm drawing the line here. No gorgeous baby chickens hatching for Easter. Folk festivals and tents in below freezing temps. That's real life. Not cute f**king chicks at Easter! Where the bl**dy rabbit? With chocolate?!!
