Yesterday morning I took the dogs to the beach for a run
after a half an hour of silly circles galloping
they tumbled back into the berlingo
And I drove to Tescos to look at the scotch egg section
I had just entered the car park when I heard a bit of growling from the back seat
And after yelling a sharp " enough" ( my usual command to stop bickering)
I looked into the rear view mirror to see what was going on
Five dog heads popped up into view
Which was just a little disconcerting
For as you all may recall
For as you all may recall
We have only four dogs.
Jess...finding her own way home |
As it turned out dog number five was an over active patterdale terrier called Jess
Who is my sister's dog.
Apparently she had become separated from my sister somewhere in the sand dunes,
Seen a car she recognised and had jumped unseen into the berlingo before I drove off
I returned to the beach and eventually found my rather frantic sister searching a nearby golf course for her dog.
Patterdale terriers are well known for their quick witted personalities

The weather is shitty today, so, I will stay in and make mince pies for Christmas
Our Christmas cards arrived this morning too

By hook or by crook I was first to have a look!
ReplyDeleteClever Jess ! I do like your Christmas cards John.
ReplyDeleteHippo tells a story.
I've heard of that same thing happening with 2 legged 'kids' too!! Thanks for the grin at the start of my day, John!
ReplyDeleteWhat a menagerie you must have to not notice the stowaway! I am envious.
ReplyDeleteToo funny. Your poor sister! Glad you noticed it so quickly. I was in an "Overseas" market yesterday and looked for Scotch eggs -- simply so I could take a picture for you and say I saw them. No luck.
ReplyDeleteMINCE PIES! how I long for a proper mince pie; it seems no one makes them any more round here (or xmoose pudding for that matter). the brit in me (father's side) is dismayed and disheartened.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant story. A friend of mine left her car in town once and walked home. Then wondered who had nicked her car. In her defence, she was sleep deprived with a new baby.
ReplyDeleteWhat a smart little dog. HE wasn't going to be deserted. I love those Christmas cards. How appropriate.
ReplyDeleteSounds like The Pirate's late Patterdale Rocky...a dog with his own mind if ever there was!
ReplyDeleteMince Pie .....be still my aching heart....I'm baking pies today for the grands all their favorites for Thanksgiving tomorrow. Also putting several casseroles together to pop in the oven in the morning. Happy baking sunshine!
ReplyDeleteI guess Jess wanted to see how the other half lives. Word is out that animals enjoy the good life at Uncle John's.
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh what a shock that must been, smart little dog though, the mince pies sound sooooo good, have a wonderful day,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story.
ReplyDeleteYour Christmas cards are so pretty.
Our farmer neighbour's dogs would wander over to our place ,feel too tired to walk back home, and come to the back door. So Chris would whistle the dogs, they'd jump into the back of our car and Chris would drive them home. I miss those lazy buggers.

The cairns used to go off with the UPS man that way. He'd notice Angus about the next street. Angus used to sneak into my van, too. He thought travelling with me meant unlimited french fries, not just the few he found on the floor when I came home.
ReplyDeleteOMW What a brilliantly intelligent dog Jess is. I love your Christmas cards - I also wish I was near you to beg a mince pie. No such item in rural Tanzania.
ReplyDeleteJessie playing shotgun ~ very cute.
ReplyDeleteSmart little dog that Jess!
ReplyDeleteI adore this story !
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful gud dug !
You are on my list of Holiday cards to send out. I am just finishing mine.
Super late this year.
cheers, parsnip
Quite the surprise for Janet, I'm sure! She had to be nearly out of her mind. Jess is smart - she could have gotten into some stranger's 'look alike' car!
ReplyDeleteDognapper!!!
ReplyDeleteClever little dog, but what a heart stopping moment for your sister :-(
ReplyDeletehow cute, Jess is navigating
ReplyDeleteYour poor sister. She must have been sooo relieved to see you. Love the cards.
ReplyDeleteYour sister's dog wants to live with you. Be sure to tell your sister that her dog loves you more.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Reminds me of the old fellow who called in his 12 cats each evening at dusk. One night when he counted heads there were 13. The extra was black with a white stripe from head to tail. True story, but told third hand to me and I can't for the life of me remember how the fellow got the skunk out of his house!
ReplyDeleteI bet your sister was relieved to find her dog in safe hands.
Jenny, you mean "how the fellow got the stink out of his house". Dear dog in heaven! In fact - come to think of it, and I will take bets: If there were a smelly competition between a fully grown tomcat leaving his calling card and a squirting skunk which one do you think would make you faint first?
DeleteU
Is that your twin?
ReplyDeleteYes, we often go dog walking to the same place at the same time without knowing
DeleteIs her picture on your blog?
DeleteYes......just put janet in the search bar at the top.....she'll comeup susie
DeleteDog-snatcher.
ReplyDeleteHe was obviously tired of running around on the beach. At least the hitchhiker was someone you knew!
ReplyDeleteGood thinking, Jess! I love your Christmas cards.
ReplyDeleteHmmm John please say that is an old picture? if not I need to come to your place and change the date in your car. 11.01.08?
