Ben Cohen is a man who seems overly comfortable in his own skin. A former rugby player come anti homophobic and bullying advocate, he seems just as comfortable fighting for the the rights of the downtrodden as he does getting his kit off for the cameraman of some gay friendly magazine..
He is an inclusive man's man. is married, has children, probably has a cute dog and a gay best mate .
He also is clinically deaf and is not adverse in making a tit of himself. He is also one of the contestants in this year's Strictly Come Dancing
Much is written about the absence of good male role models in the lives of the disenchanted youth of the Uk. Often clean living sports heroes , such as our Olympic medal winners have been hiked up onto the role model pedestal as examples to the young, but in actual fact it is the likes of Ben Cohen, with his easy going acceptance of " all" who provides young and old with a template of how best to live your life alongside others.

Great post John. Such a good point about the pedestals that some folk are hoisted upon. I think we tend to think of beautiful or successful people as being 'good' and it is not always the way.
ReplyDeleteHe played, briefly, for one of our local clubs; Brive. As you rightly say, a good all round guy!
ReplyDeleteHe played for Sale and was a great asset to the club (until the latest 'new broom' swept in!). He mentored the younger players and always had time for the fans, young and old. Sadly missed by many.
Deleteooh can't wait to see Strictly.
ReplyDeleteThere are some lads in our village in desperate need of a good male role model.
Father always told me that a true 'Gentleman' is a man who does whatever he likes so long as it does not cause offence. I agree with you that a 'real' man is one who is comfortable, and confident, in any environment.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, but I find people who are 'overly' comfortable in their own skin a bit of a turn-off. I like to see a bit of genuine self-doubt in my heroes.
ReplyDeleteAgree, Tom. I am a sucker for 'arrogance' in a man. But only if their confidence is based on fact, has true foundation - rather than an inflated ego. A bit of humility here and there - so very seductive.

Sounds lovely :)
ReplyDeletewhat a great role model!
ReplyDeleteI'd tap that! what a woofy guy, and a REAL man!
ReplyDeleteI'd not heard of him....so thank you for introducing me to a great guy.

Happens rarely, John: I don't quite know how to interpret content of your post.
ReplyDeleteThere seems a subtle sarcasm. Can't help feeling you are sending the guy up. Never heard of him. Let's just say: The way you describe him - an instant turn-off. And I don't mean sexually, though that too.
My god, guys, what's a REAL man? Want to know? I'll tell you - on application in triple replicate.
"Absence of good male role models"? John, that's just a myth. There are plenty of great guys on this planet. Not least yourself.
U
Absoluely NOT. Ursula
DeleteI admire him greatly...
I do have my own Stand Up T-shirt! YAY!
ReplyDeleteI ordered it from his website a couple of years ago...
...with the calendar. Drooling and panting guaranteed! :)
Wasn't aware of him till now - and getting the name confused with Channel 4's technology correspondent/'Pink News' bigwig (another 'hottie'). If it HAD been the latter might have given 'Strictly' a brief dip-in, though looking at the one you're referring to it might still be worth a little shufty, 'cos he definitely is something of a 'sizzler', as well as sounding like a jolly fine chap.
ReplyDeleteAn old colleague of my wife is good mates with him and he is a top bloke I've heard. Also he won the rugby world cup and his uncle won the football one in 1966 now there is a record I feel sure will stand for a long time.
ReplyDeleteShall watch out for him tonight John. Forgot you were a fan too. Doesn't it come round quickly.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, John! We do need more good role models for our youth.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a rarity.
ReplyDeleteAnd a looker to boot
DeleteIs that show the same as the one called "Dancing with the Stars" that we have here in the States? A new season will start soon with Snooki as one of the contestants. I don't think that she compares to your guy. But both of them ARE cute!
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to show us some videos from the show. Would love to see him dancing!
ReplyDeleteSounds like an all-around good guy and role model. Not too hard on the eyes, either.
ReplyDeletelovely post, you are so right about a lack of rolemodels... what a lovely man and not to shabby to look at for hours either!
ReplyDeleteI was going to say nice face, but that would be so shallow. Good on him. He is the future, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI was pointing out to Howard last night how Ben Cohen is that rare thing - a genuinely likeable England rugby player. I wish him well, but am most looking forward to seeing Dave Myers of the Hairy Bikers.
ReplyDeleteFrom the first group dance, I suspect Sophie Ellis-Bextor may be one of the leading challengers. I have a vague connection there, as my friend Paul "Billie" Reeves, BBC travel news announcer and some time football commentator, discovered her as a sixteen year old and recruited her as lead singer for his band The Congregation.
Looks a good one this year.
Sounds like an all round good guy, there's not many of them - that we hear about anyway.
ReplyDeleteA great guy! And he looks fabulous in his knickers.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't he just?
