The Real Lena Horne

On the back of this morning's post
I have been reading a little about a performer I am sorry to say, that I knew nothing about
She was quite a lady

Always be smarter than the people who hire you.”

“It's not the load that breaks you down, it's the way you carry it.”

“you have to be taught to be secondclass;you're not born that way”

In my early days I was a sepia Hedy Lamarr. Now I`m black and a woman, singing my own way

I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept. I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked.

  7. Even when she was elderly, she was gorgeous! How do some women do that?

  8. She sounded like quite a lady. I like “It's not the load that breaks you down, it's the way you carry it” - she is quite right, only sometimes it is difficult to carry it any other way!

  9. I had the pleasure of seeing her one-woman show, "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" on Broadway back in the 80's. Lena Horne was quite a lady.

  11. Strangely I remember HER well, but cannot remember any of her songs. I shall now go and remind myself. A very beautiful woman.

  13. She was a HUGE star in Britain, back in the late 50s, I think - often associated with the song 'Wheel of Fortune'.

  14. Looking at that picture I think I now understand the derivation of the term "horny"!

  15. And what a voice as well John. Nice to think that we are on our computers at the same time - i.e. early in the morning (me still in my dressing gown)
