This morning I was out around five thirty, giving the dogs a wee walk. Local shepherd Graham stopped his pick up in the lane. He was out rounding up his sheep from the main road, thieves looking for agricultural equipment had broken into his fields during the night.
Thieves don't care about closing gates behind themselves.
Mercifully, crime has not really touched us in this corner of North Wales. But this does not mean that it's not about. I logged into http://www.police.uk/ to review what crime is prevalent in our
local area and was surprised to see
the following table of results for the past year.

Please refer to the table below for the statistics in this chart.
CategoryTotalPercentage
Anti-social behaviour2652.0%
Burglary00.0%
Criminal damage and arson36.0%
Drugs12.0%
Other crime510.0%
Other theft36.0%
Public disorder and weapons36.0%
Robbery00.0%
Shoplifting36.0%
Vehicle crime24.0%
Violent crime48.0%
Apart from a couple of dozen antisocial incidents probably fuelled by cheap cider, I was surprised to see 3 public disorder incidents involving weapons ( WEAPONS!) and 4 episodes of violent crime
It makes for a sobering read.
I wish I hadn't logged into the website now.
It has depressed me.
PS
I have just checked the stats for our previous address in Sheffield. In Trelawnyd there were 4 crimes reported ( including antisocial behaviour) in April. In Hillsborough ( within a mile radius of our old house) there was 141
Yikes

Probably knives and not M16s as you would find in the US. Violent crime, perhaps domestic, which does not make it any better, but you are still safe on the streets.

  2. I am surprised that the incidence of indecent exposure is not higher in the Trelawnyd area.

    3. I was just wondering myself where J.G.'s recent pjs' 'indiscretion' was logged. If it is there, presumably it's filed under 'perpetrator unidentified'. (But WE know! Hah!)

  3. Crime levels for our postcode were zero in all categories in April! Obviously the ram raiding of the Chagford Spar branch last year wasn't included. It was a MAJOR incident involving some residents standing around staring at the police tape all day. Sheffield it's not.

  8. I knew that I was back in Germany when eyes full of reproach looked at me bitterly - I had crossed a very lonesome street while the traffic lights still showed red. I had learned so quickly to imitate your police - they were walking when the road was free, and I follwed the cops - so here in Germany I might easily become an offender shooting crime statistics up.

  9. You live in Utopia.

Here in the US, it is the land of the gun, home of the AK47.

  10. Can we hope that the weapons were rubber chickens being used to whack people over the head??

  11. I hadn't realized anti social behavior was a crime. I'd be in real trouble.

But, the joys of a small town, or village living.

  12. We would be quite shocked if we were to know about the things that are not found out or reported, would we not? x

  13. What exactly defines 'anti-social behavior' on that statistics sheet? I suspect it differs from the definition I know... which is to be cranky, ill tempered, and not terribly interested in being a social butterfly. ;)

  14. Many years ago our population was 15,000 and any crime of offence was very rare. Now we have shrunk to 8,000 and it has gotten so crazy! Domestic violence is the highest on the list...in one household the ex husband killed the wife and set fire to the home with 2 children ...only one child was visiting relatives so survived. In another the husband shot and killed wife and child and then himself. Just 2 nights ago at my granddaughters home the neighbors saw a man with a mask on and a flashlight looking thru her boyfriends unlocked truck then tried to get into granddaughters car....she is a smart girl and keeps her car locked at all times. Their rather large boxer was turned loose and the guy took off running up the street. It's the times we live in now I believe....sad.

  15. Yeah, but Gaz caught 'em all in Hillsborough! We only have 1 antisocial behaviour crime on our street and it was our daughter having a party a couple of years ago when we were away!!! We don't get on with the neighbour and he dobbied her in. We get lots of attempted break ins on our road as a few of the neighbours have vans which seem to be popular. xxx

  16. One should never make light of crime...but I suspect the public disorder is the celebrations after the village fair...here in Essex, there is an additional category...people arrested for being too orange

  17. Never thought of North Wales as such a hot bed of crime.
Here in semi-rural suburban Massachusetts my home defense strategy is hoping they take one look at our simple abode and opt instead for the millionaire down the hill.
Perhaps I could put up some helpful signs. . . .

  19. Well this HAS cheered me up, I checked the link and found that there have only been a couple of ASBO's, a burglary and one "violent crime" in our area. Which just goes to show how safe it is in living in the sticks as opposed to in town. A good choice, and worth the sacrifice of other facilities, such as public transport and shops.

  20. Here in my sleepy midMichigan village, the police chief publishes his incident list each week on FB. Crime rises every summer while school is out. Usually "crime " consists of failure to come to a complete stop. We can expect an increase in fake 911 (999) calls and theft from cars. No AK47's used so far. Major, major crime is domestic violence unfortunately.

  23. They publish our 'most wanted' list and crime stats in the local paper each week. Local criminal activity gets lots of attention.

  25. We have a section in the weekly paper known as the "police blotter" where they list the crimes by town. Many of them involve traffic violations, some are for drugs or domestic violence, and then there are the occasional squabbles between neighbours that get out of hand. Even though many own guns here, there are very few incidents involving firearms, for which i'm glad. At my last location, we were near enough to a big city that shootings were a daily occurrence :0(

  28. There's very little crime in Belfast, despite the media image. In fact a local police officer rang my doorbell some time last year and asked if we had any crime to report as they couldn't quite believe how little there was! There was much more crime in the London borough I used to live in in the nineties.

  31. I am shocked by the 50 offenses listed in your table, shocked that it represents a year's total. In my town we accomplish double that every hour or so. You're indeed fortunate!

  32. Mmmm... looks like you've missed out 'indecent exposure' there John, i.e. big hairy faced bloke wandering around N. Wales with his arse hanging out in the middle of the night.

On second thoughts, forget that as it's probably covered under anti-social behavior.
