Cooling Towers

Regardless of where you stand regarding the environment, I suspect everyone will enjoy this rather understated and clever advertisement .I love it when ideas like these come out of left field and I wish that I could be as creative and innovative in how I look at things.

  1. Hm - creative, yes. Clever, yes. But it sort of made me feel sad for the towers. Which isn't the response they were aiming for, I suspect!

  2. Same here. It was rather like at the end of The Snowman when you see he's melted. :(

  3. Reminds me of Fred Dibner. Shouldn't some of those towers be preserved as part of the UK's industrial past?

  4. If it had gone on much longer I too might have been weeping. But if the music had been uplifting I could have been saying "Good riddance to you lot!"

  5. Oh goodness me John, nearly in tears here. Interesting how personalising the cooling towers made me feel sorry for them, particularly as they had just had a nice cup of tea. Yes, Cro, I thought of Fred Dibnah too.

    1. Funny that the desired effect of supporting greener power was lost somewhat by personalising the chimneys

    2. I was nearly in tears too. Music + anthropomorphic towers = high emotion obviously!

  6. That is a super video...but I too felt sad for the collapsing chimneys and towers...perhaps they should have made them look evil....

  7. Even though I support the concept of moving on to wind ( etc) power - yes I felt sad for the collapsing towers.

    Very clever.

    1. Another over emotional sap like me then?

  8. If they hadn't been going about daily life activities and had been belching unlimited amounts of malignant smoke into the air while looking suitably evil, it would've been a bit better. I DID appreciate the cleverness though. ;)

Cooling towers look evil, but they only belch steam. The real evil is more concealed.

  10. I love that video John ....... just by a couple of dots and dashes of a felt tip pen, they have bought the towers to life.
Trouble is { apparently!!} wind power is an extraordinary expensive and inefficient way of reducing C02 emissions. Wind power requires a huge commitment of investment resources to a technology that's not very green. Them that know reckon that, if we commit to wind power, it will be the biggest mistake EVER !!
........ and, the little tower characters are so lovable. XXXX

    2. I was just going to write what you did but you said it so much better.
Most of the wind turbines (?) on the way to Palm Springs are broken or barley moving. As I understand if you live near them they give off a sound (?) that drives people loony. One farmer said his cows were affected too. Never found out why.
The towers are so sweet, they have made them too loveable.

      cheers, parsnip

  11. My late, and absolute favourite, uncle helped to build many cooling towers in his time. When my brothers and I were young. any we spotted - especially on long and boring car journeys, received a quick chorus (or ten) of "I can see the chimneys". Later, my children did the same... it made a nice change from "Are we nearly there yet?" or "Tim's going to be sick". Time moves on, but it seems no time at all.

The film was brilliant - but sad.

  12. Nice memory Elaine.... As for the video... It's amazing what a couple of black marks can do to humanise a ordinary day object

  13. Brilliant, but like everyone else, I felt sad for them at first. ahaha I do like the time to move on message though.

  14. And the nocturnal towers were in Sheffield of course as i;m sure you'll remember, right by the M1 at Meadowhall.

  15. As much as I dislike and fear those cooling towers (and what lies beneath) When they go here, my husband (who will be too old to start a new job) will find himself without a paycheck.
The video made me sad in more ways than one, the music didn't help my mood either.

  16. Aww poor towers. They looked too cute to be demolished. Wind power is terribly noisy if you live too close to it, the kind of thrump thrump they give out as they turn is enough to drive me insane. They look spectacular from a distance though, but in a big landscape tend to ruin the outlook. Dunno if I think they will be better for us all or not.

  17. So sad for the towers :-(

Not all wind turbines are what they seem either, my Lovely Hubby a 'specific type of engineer' can tell that some we drive past are actually electrically driven ie. powered by electricity to keep turning when it's calm to make us believe the company is 'greener' than it actually is.

Cooling towers are not bad, especially the ones with faces :-)
