A Welsh Gal Done Good

This was a new one on me
I was fascinated by the story of Princess Lillian of Sweden who died today at the age of 97
Born in the South Wales Valleys in 1915 plain Lillian Davies moved to London to work as a model before getting married to an actor Ivan Craig. After divorcing her husband she embarked on a decades long love affair with Prince Bertil of Sweden before she eventually married him in 1973
According to the press, Princess Lillian was a firm favourite with the Swedish People, popular for her  sense of humour and prank playing.
( though you can't quite capture that in the above photo?)
I liked this story.
I liked it because it underlines how fickle life can become when you follow your heart and "go with the flow"
Who knows where we all will end up?
HAVE THERE BEEN FICKLE MOMENTS OF FATE IN YOUR LIFE.?

  1. Oh yes ..... and I've grabbed each and every one of them :-)

We only get one life, why not live it the best we can.

  2. That's weird John. I just read her obituary in the paper not an hour ago and hadn't heard of her before. What a life! She looks regal with a capital R!

  3. She looks like the love child of Maggie Smith and my Grandmother (who died at 96). I have been guilty of not grabbing such moments and then trying not to live with the regret!

  4. I didn't know anything about this story until I heard it on the news this morning. What a lovely elegant lady and such a romantic story. Hope it's not snowing, it keeps trying here.

  7. Lillian looks as if she was born to be wed into a royal family with the elegance she exudes in this photograph. Fickle moments have been missed but not all!

  9. I read this in this mornings yahoo news. Their love lasted thru many years waiting for the next heir to come of age and take to the throne so as not to cause a dramatic crisis to the throne. And then they married. A bit of a Cinderella story. I often think of the "what if's" but all in all very happy with the choices I've made. In my next life I'll try more at an earlier age :) and not just settle. Travel more at an earlier age...?

  10. If I ever met Fate I would take great pleasure in stomping on ALL of his sodding fickle fingers.....

  11. I'd say she's 'done good'! Good for her for listening to her instincts and trusting them!!
Trusting my instincts has sometimes made me very unpopular, but it's always an adventure.

  12. I read about this lady...what a wonderful story, although not always a happy tale. I wish I had the courage to always follow my heart...

  13. Yes John, I read about her this morning in an obit. too.
As for the fickle finger of fate - well every situation is one really isn't it. Robert Frost said it all when he spoke of the road not taken. If we had not bought a cottage in our village I would not have met the farmer when I became a widow. And think of the process of having children - one egg fertilised by one of millions of sperm - what if it had been a different combination - well you as a nurse would know more about that than me I suppose.

  14. She certainly looks the part of "royalty"... it always gladdens my heart to hear of folks who live the life they want. I have a t-shirt that says "Live your own life... all the others are taken".

  15. She looks very regal that Welsh lass does.

  16. I read that story here in the States yesterday and didn't know anything about it. Such a sad sweet story.
I just assumed more people knew about this over in the UK.
My fickle of fate was marring my x. I did not choose well !

    cheers, parsnip

  17. You go, girl. Hurrah for the Swedish people who were appreciative of a queen with a joy for life.

  18. Hadn't heard of her but she looks wonderful.

In answer to your question the answer is yes which is why I now, quite unexpectedly, have a new , caring, man in my life in addition to my husband who is in a rest home with dementia.

  19. Oh how romantic! Funny how we don't see Charles and Camilla in the same light though eh hehee.
Meeting my husband was like that. If he hadn't chosen amamus as his online handle, I"d never have noticed him. But I was intrigued by it and sent him a quip about it. From that, we got sending messages to and fro, and by the time we met face to face 6 weeks later, we both knew it was forever. That was 12 years and 10 years of marriage ago. And things just get better! :)

  22. Met my Wildebeast over a pint of Sam Adams in a bar after my first marriage fell apart and I certainly wasn't looking for another....but a piercing look across the table and a tug on that scruffy beard did it for me...I'd do it again too!

  23. I had a call about a month ago from a fella I haven't seen in 18 years. Two weeks later I was contacted via Facebook from a fella I haven't seen in 30 years. They both will be in the area in April and want to visit. You think the fickle finger of fate is knocking at my door?

  24. I am so glad that she followed her dreams. I have let a few slip through my clumsy fingers.

  25. I read about her today, too. She was still a beautiful person. I can imagine her breaking into a smile after that photo session was done.

  26. I like to think I've made the most of those fickle moments of fate, but I've probably let more than a few slip through my fingers.

Seeing the picture of the Princess and reading about her exciting life, there's a bit of a disconnect, isn't there? It makes me understand a little bit better why so many people choose to have a youthful picture of themselves posted to go with their obits.

  27. Lady Magnon (a Swede) has been in mourning all day; and now I'll have to break the news about Lillian.

  28. No there have been no fickle moments of fate in my life. It has all been like following a car manual and I have just reached the section that deals with exhaust emissions. Oh heck, I think I need a new silencer! Thwarp!
