A Kindness

When you are over tired, anything that goes pear shaped can drag you down into a toddler-ish type tantrum worthy of any spoilt fat 18 month old brat who has just had his choccy biccy swiped from him.
We had a bloody awful shift last night. I was over tired when I got home so I just didn't need a rather unpleasant job of trying to push back a prolapse on the back end of my female magpie duck....but I did it before walking into the kitchen to discover a wonderfully complicated pattern of shitty dog paw prints all over the carpet
I could have wept.........
I didn't though
I just had a swearing fit worthy of any Liverpudlian docker
Minutes later, as I was disinfecting the floor, with bleach  there was a gentle knock on the cottage window.
I sighed and answered the door.
It was animal helper Pat.
She handed me a wrapped up green parcel , which turned out to be a quality waterproofed jacket
And said in passing
" I have been sorting things out at home and found this... I thought it would be ideal for you on the field"
It was as simple as that.
Do you know .....when you are feeling pissed off and tired
And when life throws you one of those shitty paw kind of moments that almost heaves you over the edge
All it takes is a little act of kindness, for you to regain your perspective , your wits........
And your sense of humour.
I was and am very grateful..........
Off to bed for an hour

  5. Sorry you're still under par.
Your job, even part time is a real energy sucker. As you know my son is a nurse and only the other day he was telling me of a depressed patient that had touched him so much that he could not get her off his mind.
Combine that with the weather and other bits and bobs I'm not surprised that you felt like booing.
One simple act is all it takes to make a person feel better and it came at the right time.
Have a lovely day and hope the sun comes out for you.

  7. "Do you ever get one of those days?".

Isn't an Elvis Presley song John? Your friend Pat sounds a wonderful person.

  9. Why, oh why, do the animals always wait until you're exhausted to make a mess? Or have a prolapsed woo-hoo? (I hate it when that happens.) The jacket is exactly up your alley! I bet your neighbours absolutely adore you.

  10. If you are nice to people they will be kind back and this was perfect timing.

  11. Somehow the universe just knew it was time for you to cash in a few (of your large bankroll of) karma credits. Impeccable timing. Bless Pat. Hope you are feeling a bit more refreshed after your nap.

  12. How lovely! Exactly the lift you needed....

  13. It's a lovely jacket--at just the right moment. Nice when it happens that way. You've certainly earned good karma. I usually leave your blog with a smile and good intentions.

  15. Since I am living in a constant state of tired, I almost shed a tear over the parcel. How nice. A prolapse you had to fix.....ewwww....but then, you are the nurse, not I.

After that kind of day, an act of kindness of ANY description would have thrown me into tears.

  18. Sometimes we get what we need at exactly the moment that we need it. And good folks seem to gravitate to you with kind thoughts and deeds, so it's not random, they truly must adore you. I think you deserve it.

  19. How wonderful when those moments of kindess arrive at exactly the perfect moment! I'm certain every time you wear that waterproofed jacket in the field and have your boots nearly sucked off your feet because it's bloody mud season again, the memory of such a kindness will keep you smiling and grateful.

  22. An hour? Sounds to me as though you could do with all day there - surely it is only this time last week when you had that awful cold. Give those doggies a good cuddle and thank your lucky stars for friends bearing gifts.

  23. I love those moments. They are rare but wonderful. Off to bed now.

  27. It's those unexpected kindnesses when we're at our lows that can just overwhelm our emotions. I got a lump in my throat just reading this.

  28. Yes. I was thanked recently for a few gentle words of kindness I sent to someone feeling low. I responded by saying that little acts of kindness can go a very long way.
I'm glad someone was kind to you.

  29. True, oh so true it is: the small victories, the small kindness' received and given, the wee moments of contentment are, as the years go by (or bye! lol) the sustaining treasures... Understanding it to be so is one of the plus points of the middle phase of life.

Found my way to your writings via 500 dollar tomato and am looking forward to strolling thru your posts!

  30. It seems to me that you have the loveliest friends.....so I suspect you must be a lovely friend to have....and her kindness when you were just at the edge of your temper was very sweet.....and my grandfather was a Liverpool docker and he was the quietest man...maybe he only swore at work? He had a set of differing size hooks hanging up under the stairs...they used to fascinate me.

  31. and thats why when someone is a crabby apple to me while ringing up my purchases, or some other odd chore, I will always give them empathy and say "tough day, huh?"...by the time i leave they are smiling and wishing me a good day.

You have a good friend who used a jacket instead of words for empathy... xxxx

ps - i would have at least whimpered a bit after the work/prolapse/ muddy paws incidents - youre more man then me... ;)

  36. Shitty dog paw prints on my carpet always make me want to cry too.

  37. Karma coming back full circle John. I'm sure there are plenty of days that you are the one doing the giving. Treat yourself to a Scotch egg! And get one for Pat also.

  38. Nice that you got a new drably green jacket on your off say , but it is the picture on the wall behind the jacket that really interested me. I can't see it well on my little gadget phone so have to ask is the a spiffy standard poodle clipped to perfection in that photo. ?? or is it just my poor eye sight and wild imagination palying games with me. Do tell?

  41. The waterproof jacket looks very stylish and will go nicely with your crimson Bermuda shorts and your Benny from "Crossroads" bobble hat. Is Pat one of those "care in the community" workers? I guess she was just doing her rounds.

  42. I live for those small acts of kindness, and try to give them out in equal measure (or greater) to what I receive.

    ReplyDelete
  43. And that is the point at which I would have dissolved into sobs. When things have gone pear-shaped I put my chin up and keep going. It is when someone is nice to me I am in danger of crying a puddle and drowning myself. I do hope that today has been better.

  44. John..the hooks were for lifting and carrying cargo from the boats....have you seen the film 'On the Waterfront'?..that sort of thing.

  45. It is people like Pat that keep our faith alive in fellow human beings. :)

  46. Nothing like a kindly freebie to cheer you up and glad to hear the snooze perked you up. Shitty paw prints are why we have a wooden floor and a shitty coloured rug.

My dear poor Francis, that comes from being the papal equivalent of Robin Hood the saviour of the widowed and orphaned.

Some time ago my nerves too were in shreds and tatters. The slightest kindness would have me well up. Because I don't like catching people unawares, fair is fair, I'd give advance warning: "Don't say a word or I'll burst into tears."
