Next Time I'll Lock The Door

Being a cat amongst a household of rambuncious terriers cannot be an easy job
But after nearly six years Albert has managed to maintain an existence which is practically stress free, injury free and thankfully totaly devoid of the rather stomach churning dog habits of adminstering agood bottom lick.
This morning , as I was sat on the loo reading the BBC news on my Ipad, I could hear the dogs galloping around the cottage. Dogs cannot have intelligent horseplay, it is just part of their genetic make up. Once a chase has started , they seem to put on their idiot heads, they throw any good sense out of the window and they turn effively into hairy , uncoordinated morons.
Cats on the other hand can enjoy a good romp, but know instinctively when to draw the line, their control is a product of quiet self serving intelligence.
The chase went up and down the stairs all the time I was reading all about that amazing meteor shower in the Urals and by the time I was catching up with the Oscar Pistorius affair Albert shot into the bathroom and jumped silently into the bath, where he sat quietly and still as a statue.
The dogs then all burst in victorious in the presumption that they had cornered the cat in the smallest of rooms. They were all goo goo eyed like excited babies, but suddenly all calmed down when Albert was no where to be seen. Not one of the three, thought to look inside the bath, where Albert was sitting, silently licking his paws.
Deflated, the dogs thundered off to recheck the other rooms of the cottage, and after a reasonable and relaxing moment of peace Albert climbed out of the bath and walked over to offer me a face rub.
His expression said it all
"Suckers!"
He was thinking

  2. Yes cats are clever little fellows; prior to the new windows one of ours was able to open the window and let the dog out!

  3. I am now reassured that the six month old cat, which is arriving tomorrow, will be able to look after herself!

  4. Old joke:

Two men sit in a pub watching a dog lick his own thingy.
One says to the other, "Don't you wish you could do that?"
Other says, "Give him a biscuit and he'll probably let you".

  6. YAYZ for albert! although you should hear my two cats chase each other throughout the house; sounds like a herd of crazed elephants!

  7. The only time our cat shows any sign of athleticism is when the dogs chase him up a tree. Then he just sticks his tongue out at them, and shows them his middle paw.

  15. Sounds like you have become addicted to your iPad.

You will never find a cat with an inferiority complex.

Just read your post about Albert and the dogs loved the picture of him in the bath. Our cat Cleo rules supreme in her room and Ted (Westie) rules supreme in the rest of the house. Funny old things...

  17. Haha how funny. I've never thought of dogs and cats and how they play differently, but it is so true. Cats know where to draw the line and when to stop.

  20. Snippet is as thick as two short planks with the capacity to love unconditionally whereas my, now deceased, cats were members of feline mensa and gave affection very much on their terms. Hmmm.

  21. Surely their amazing canine noses could have zeroed in on Albert's trail...unless there was some other, overwhelming oder masking it?

  22. Albert was probably saying "hey! You’ll get haemorrhoids
    sitting there this long"

  26. My friends cats would run around like crazy and then attack the dog snarling and sounds from hell then they all separate panting and lay down and go to sleep. First time I saw that I really thought they were killing each other.
My Scotties would have found the cat, especially Hamish !

    cheers, parsnip

  27. I can just picture it all (except for the part of you on the loo.. ) and being a "cat person" love that Albert outsmarted them again. Way to go Albert!

  28. The dear, dead, dog, was NOT a cat person. He engaged in an almost daily war with Irene's cat down the street. He used to come home with a bloody nose on a regular basis. He was biding his time.... he got his opportunity one day, Irene's cat wasn't expecting him and DDD got wind of this, got stealthy and chased cat up tree. Cat stayed there all night and didn't bother DDD again. It all goes round and comes round!

  30. Good for Albert! Emma the beautiful Calico Queen does not have to share the apt. with dogs, but she still enjoys hopping into the bathtub to wait for me when I'm in the bathroom. Even in the winter, so it's not just that it's a cool place. Cats rule!!

Am loving the expression on Albert's face in that photo. Yup, cats really are very intelligent creatures.

  32. Hey, my black Maxine has a white spot on her chest just like Albert! Cross-pond cousins? I've never noticed that spot on Albert before.

  33. Yay for Albert. When the chasing gets too vigorous Jazz leaps to the top of the fridge. From there he can walk behind the cupboards. It is very disconcerting to walk past a purring cupboard in the small hours...

  34. Albert and our cat CC may live a world apart from one another, but they are both cut from the same cloth! I don't know how my cat does it either!

  35. Ah, I see your pets give you just as much privacy as ours do.

  36. Smart creatures, cats. They sit there looking entirely vacant but their brains are working furiously, planning the next cunning scheme to manipulate or outmanoeuvre the local dog and human population. Not to be trusted an inch.
